A WIN for Course Accessibility with Blackboard Ally How to be a Faculty Ally for Students with Disabilities DoIT's Instructional Technology division will be holding various Blackboard training sessions to highlight changes to Ultra and the addition of Ally, which supports the accessibility of course materials for all students, especially students with disabilities. 

Learn about Ally, a new tool to help improve the accessibility of course content in Blackboard. Attend this orientation and demonstration session to see Ally’s powerful file conversion tools for alternative formats. Review the accessibility of your own course materials using the Ally indicator while getting an understanding of how to create accessible course materials.

The United Nations has declared April 2nd World Autism Awareness Day, and with its prevalence - which was recently updated by the CDC to occurring in 1 in 59 live births in the United States - UMBC has plenty to celebrate among 14,000 students and ~3,000 employees.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability; signs typically appear in early childhood and affect a person's ability to communicate and interact with others to varying degrees. ASD is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a "spectrum condition".  There is no known single cause of autism, and early intervention leads to significantly improved outcomes.  Some of the associated behaviors include delayed learning of language; difficulty making eye contact or holding a conversation; difficulty with executive functioning, which relates to reasoning and planning; narrow, intense interests; poor motor skills and sensory sensitivities.  It bears repeating that a person on the spectrum might follow many of these behaviors, or just a few, or be subject to additional diagnostic criteria. The diagnosis is based on the totality of behaviors and their severity*.

What can you do if someone discloses that they have autism?
  • Don't jump to conclusions or make assumptions about what the individual's particular challenges related to autism may or may not be.  Every individual on the autism spectrum is different
  • Listen for why they might be disclosing to you.  They may only want to be better understood. If they have academic concerns related to their autism, they can work with Student Disability Services for specialized support, beyond existing resources for all students like the Learning Resource Center.  For campus work concerns beyond what Human Resources routinely covers, the Employee Accommodation Request process begins online.
  • Consider your role when information is shared with you.  As a peer, friend or colleague, ask them before disclosing to others.  As a supervisor, you might have a more nuanced discussion about if and how they might want the information shared with others if they are not requesting an accommodation.
  • If you are unfamiliar with autism, learn more about it**.
Individuals with autism are a reservoir of talent, and UMBC's community is enhanced by the inclusion of people who are known to be highly analytical, very focused and very task-oriented.  Dan Ackyroyd turned his youthful focus on law enforcement and the supernatural into the screenplay for Ghostbusters.  What will the rising tide of Autism Awareness bring with the next generation?

WEBINAR TOPIC: ADA Accommodations for Internships & Practicums: Differentiate Between Institutional vs. Individual Obligations to Meet Compliance Standards

Faculty and classroom instructors have a responsibility to provide equal educational opportunity to qualified students of all abilities, with or without a reasonable accommodation — the same is true for internship and practicum locations. Communicating with collaboration sites about understanding and complying with ADA and disability-informed rules and regulations is par for the course. Connecting with internship/practicum coordinators and students with disabilities to assure they understand their individual responsibilities when it comes to requesting and complying with ADA accommodations is essential, so determinations can be made about what is reasonable while meeting your compliance obligations.

The Accessibility Technology Test Kitchen will offer a hands-on, collaborative experience for faculty and staff who would like to explore innovative technologies and strategies to support accessibility in traditional, hybrid, and online classrooms at UMBC. The event kicks off on Thursday November 8, 2018 at noon in ENG 102.

Bring your own device (laptop, tablet, smartphone) to one of our Technology Test Kitchen areas to learn and explore both faculty and student approaches to accessibility. Each Kitchen features “chefs” from Accessibility & Disability Services or IT to discuss “recipes” (strategies, tools, resources, etc.) for addressing a particular issue. Participants will have hands-on opportunities to explore the Kitchen’s tools and resources.

Classroom Technologies

Discover solutions to large and small classroom spaces: Cameras, displays, document cameras, wireless video, wireless audio, and more. New assistive technologies will be introduced at three unique stations!

Explore the student experience: Screen readers, note taking tools, audio recorders, smartpens, text-to-speech, and more.

Participants will begin in ENGR 102 with a light lunch and orientation before exploring the test kitchens. No experience necessary.

Robotic Journeys – A Quest for Independence
The modern era has seen an increase in the use of robotics and assistive technologies, which open the doors of accessibility to people with disabilities and seniors. By developing abilities and problem-solving skills in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, we can tackle challenges in healthcare through innovation and technological advancement to benefit society today and impact future generations. Presenting via the Beam telepresence robot, Kavita Krishnaswamy shares her personal and professional experiences – from her dissertation research to overcoming challenges with the power of assistive technologies, artificial intelligence, and robotics to achieve independence.

The 2018 Provost’s Teaching & Learning Symposium Posters on Transformative Learning Experiences for Diversity & Inclusion will happen on October 12, 2018, 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. 

Two noteworthy presentations:

Making Course Content Accessible: A Blackboard Ally Pilot, Mariann Hawken (Instructional Technology) Are your Blackboard courses fully accessible? How would you know if your course materials are accessible to all students? Blackboard Ally is a tool that focuses on making digital course content more accessible. Integrated into the Blackboard system, Ally provides a robust toolkit to help remediate inaccessible content, provide alternate formats to students, and inform faculty about ways to improve accessibility of their materials. The FA2018 Ally pilot will provide participating faculty with an opportunity to evaluate the system, remediate course content for accessibility, and provide feedback support staff about Ally's future use at UMBC. 

Universal Design for Instruction, Michael Canale (Office of Accessibility and Disability Services) Institutions reported enrolling approximately 1.1 million students with disabilities during the 12-month 2016-2017 academic year. An increase of 28% from the 2006-2007 12-month academic year. The types of disabilities reported by institutions are 26% learning disabilities, 24% Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), 15% Autism Spectrum Disorder, 20 % mental illness/psychological conditions, 11% Physical/health impairment, 4% sensory impairment. Only 1 in 4 will graduate with a bachelor’s degree. These numbers only reflect those students who have registered with their student disability service office. Universal Design of Instruction has been defined as: an approach to teaching that consists of the proactive design and use of inclusive instructional strategies that benefit a broad range of learners including students with disabilities. The nine Principles of UDI provide a framework for college faculty to use when designing or revising instruction to be responsive to diverse student learners and to minimize the need for “special” accommodations and retrofitted changes to the learning environment (Scott, McGuire, & Embry, 2002).
