International Day of Persons with Disabilities Nothing About Us Without Us

Each year on December 3rd, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is honored as the United Nation's commitment for promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The day raises awareness of the political, economic, social and cultural aspects of disability that affects people around the world.

More than 1 billion people in the world have a disability. At fifteen percent (15%) of the world’s population, persons with disabilities account for the world’s largest minority. Furthermore, one out of every seven people is affected by disability. 

Working toward an accessible future is everyone's responsibility. We must work together to create a future which insists that people are not excluded due to their health impairments. WEBINAR TOPIC: ADA Accommodations for Internships & Practicums: Differentiate Between Institutional vs. Individual Obligations to Meet Compliance Standards

Faculty and classroom instructors have a responsibility to provide equal educational opportunity to qualified students of all abilities, with or without a reasonable accommodation — the same is true for internship and practicum locations. Communicating with collaboration sites about understanding and complying with ADA and disability-informed rules and regulations is par for the course. Connecting with internship/practicum coordinators and students with disabilities to assure they understand their individual responsibilities when it comes to requesting and complying with ADA accommodations is essential, so determinations can be made about what is reasonable while meeting your compliance obligations.

  • Brandon Washington is the Director of Equal Opportunity and Compliance at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
  • Daiquiri Steele serves as the Director of Diversity & Inclusion and Assistant Professor of Law in Residence at the University of Alabama School of Law.
