  <Title>Celebrating National LGBTQ+ Pride with Disability Awareness</Title>

Our nation is at its best when it welcomes, represents and includes people of all backgrounds. This includes people with disabilities and the intersections shared with the LGBTQ+ community.     <Title>National Assistive Technology Day is April 17</Title>

          <div class="html-content"><p><span>Join the U.S. Congress, Maryland Department of Disabilities  and the disability community within UMBC and beyond to celebrate <a href="https://ataporg.org/policy-and-advocacy/national-at-awareness-day/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">National Assistive Technology (AT) Awareness Day.</a></span></p><p><br></p><p><span>National AT Awareness Day honors people with disabilities who require AT to access their education, workplace, community, and recreational activities.   <Title>REPOST: Accessibility, Alt Text, AI and Ally For The Win</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span><a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/posts/136790" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Instructional Technology/Dr. Mariann Hawken's shared about creating accessible course content via myUMBC for National Distance Learning Week</a>. That informative post is shared via ADS here:</span></p><p><span> <br>Providing accessible images is a crucial step to ensure inclusivity and equal access to learning. When images are properly described, students using screen readers are able to access an equitable educational environment. We use the alternative text field when placing images in documents, presentations, and in our Blackboard courses.</span></p><p><span>There are several tools available to help faculty with accessible images. </span></p><ol><li><span><strong>Ally Course Accessibility Report </strong></span><a href="https://help.blackboard.com/Ally/Ally_for_LMS/Instructor/Course_Accessibility_Report" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>provides a big picture overview</span></a><span> of your course's accessibility score, growing content by type and identifying issues in your course that is easiest to fix. Clicking the Start button will open a panel that helps you find the images and enter alternative text for those images in your course.</span></li><li><span>When using images in </span><strong>Google Slides or Documents</strong>, you can click on the image to <a href="https://support.google.com/docs/answer/6199477?hl=en" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>activate a new menu</span></a><span>, Format Options. Select Alt Text to enter a description. Repeat this process for every image.</span></li><li><span>When embedding images into </span><strong>Microsoft Word/PowerPoint</strong> files, you can <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/add-alternative-text-to-a-shape-picture-chart-smartart-graphic-or-other-object-44989b2a-903c-4d9a-b742-6a75b451c669#PickTab=Windows" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>improve accessibility</span></a><span> with a simple right-click on the image. This action will activate a menu where you can find Edit Alt Text. If the image does not contain information, such as a stylistic border, you can mark it as decorative.</span></li></ol><p><span>What if your course uses complex images, bursting with intricate details? How can you ensure that every student, regardless of visual ability, fully grasps their significance? </span></p><p><span>ChatGPT 4* offers </span><a href="https://help.openai.com/en/articles/8400551-image-inputs-for-chatgpt-faq" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>powerful image input functionality</span></a><span>, allowing you to upload an image and generate complex descriptions. With its advanced language capabilities, ChatGPT can analyze an image, identify key elements, and produce informative alternative text that conveys the essence of the image. For example, we uploaded three complex images to generate extended descriptions of 100 words or less.</span></p></span><div><br></div><div><img src="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/instructional-technology/posts/136790/attachments/49515" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></div><br><div><div>Alt-text-left: An image of Italy with no landmarks indicated. The AI identified three sections supporting online, hybrid, and in-person learning and the various delivery models within each scope.</div></div><div><br></div><div><span><p><span>It's important to note that ChatGPT might not always perfectly interpret every image, especially if it's highly abstract or intricate, and it might take a more cautious approach to its interpretation if it doesn't have sufficient context or guidance from the prompt provided with the image upload. As such, it's always a good practice to review the generated description to ensure its accuracy and appropriateness for your students.     <div class="html-content"><strong>National Disability Awareness Month</strong><span> is  held in October to raise awareness about issues that arise within the lived experience of people with disabilities, and celebrates the many and varied contributions of Americans with disabilities.</span><div><br></div><div>NDAM's roots go back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with various types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to "National Disability Awareness Month" to address inclusion more broadly.<br></div><div><br></div><div>Americans with disabilities make up almost one-fifth of our population, which brings more celebration to this month, underneath the umbrella of the  Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)  <a   <Title>Reflections and Hope on the 33rd Anniversary of the ADA</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div>Thank you for everyone who celebrated the 33rd Anniversary of the ADA, whether it was on campus with our <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/accessibility/events/118447" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Accessibility Tour</a>, attending the <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/accessibility/events/118571" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">ADS/SDS Open House</a>, or <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/accessibility/posts/134257" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">engaging with opportunities to create awareness, inclusion and pride-of-identity for people with disabilities</a>.</div><div><br></div><div>At the executive level <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/presidential-actions/2023/07/25/a-proclamation-on-anniversary-of-the-americans-with-disabilities-act-2023/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">President Biden issued an ADA Anniversary  proclamation</a>, and <a href="https://www.access-board.gov/news/2023/07/26/u-s-access-board-holds-town-hall-meeting-at-national-federation-of-the-blind-in-baltimore/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Maryland Lt. Governor Aruna Miller, on behalf of Governor Wes Moore, issued a proclamation earlier in the week proclaiming July 26th to be a day of observance for the ADA with a commitment to advance the inclusion of people with disabilities</a>.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><p>Some good news from the <a href="https://www.ahead.org/home" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Association of Higher Education and Disability/AHEAD</a> (one of the professional associations that UMBC's ADS/SDS Staff belongs to)</p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span>"AHEAD is happy to share that on the 33rd Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), <a href="https://morelle.house.gov/media/press-releases/congressman-joe-morelle-introduces-legislation-make-college-education-more" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Rep. Joe Morelle (D-NY)</a> and<a href="https://fitzpatrick.house.gov/2023/7/fitzpatrick-morelle-introduce-legislation-to-make-college-degrees-more-accessible" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) </a><a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/5739/titles?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22%22%5D%7D&amp;r=1&amp;s=1" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">have <em>reintroduced the Pell Grant for Students with Disabilities Act</em>!</a> (HR 5739 for those wanting to reach out to their Federal Representatives)</span></p><p><br></p><p><span>This reintroduction is due to AHEADs continued efforts to work with Congress to address an issue that has been raised time and time again by our members as a stumbling block for students with disabilities to successfully complete college. Students are in the position of having to decide whether to follow their recommended course load or ignore the recommendation and go with a full-course load in order to qualify for the full Pell Grant amount for which they are eligible.</span></p><p><br></p><p><span>The Pell Grant for Students with Disabilities Act, like its predecessor in the last Congress, would allow students with disabilities to take the recommended course load without losing Pell Grant funding by having the U.S. Department of Education consider the recommended course load as equivalent to a full course load (which is 12 credits)." -AHEAD listserv post 7-27-23</span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p>Don't be shy about reaching out to your elected officials.  Closer to home, resources for campus members and visitors with disabilities include:  <a href="https://sds.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Student Disability Service</a>s, <a href="https://accessibility.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Accessibility and Disability Services (Employees and Visitors)</a>, and <a href="https://accessibility.umbc.edu/report-campus-accessibility-concern/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC's online form for reporting accessibility concerns</a>.  As Disability Pride Month comes to a close, please know we honor and celebrate people with disabilities every day, and have more events planned, especially for October, Disability Employment Awareness Month.</p><p><br></p><p>A photo of three women conferring over their laptops  while seated accompanies this post.     <div class="html-content"><em><span>Are you a student looking for assistive technology?</span><br><br><span>Are you a faculty member who received a letter of accommodation and wants to learn more?</span><br><br><span>Are you a student curious about assistive technology?</span></em><br><br><span> </span><br><span>This series is open to all students, staff, and faculty interested in learning more about the intersection of accommodations and technology.  We will be demonstrating low tech, and other assistive technology, demonstration captioning options and document remediation </span><br><span> </span><br><br><span><strong>All sessions will be held from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM in Math Psychology 222</strong></span><br><span> </span><br><br><span><strong>Session 1.   February 22nd, 12:00-1:00 </strong>  This session will focus on an introduction to assistive technology available to all students, staff, and faculty</span><br><span> </span><br><br><span><strong>Session 2. March 22nd, 12:00 – 1:00  </strong> “I received a letter of accommodation…now what?” This session will take a deep dive into accommodations and their relation to functional limitations</span><br><br><br><span><strong>Session 3.   <Title>REPOST: Black Disability History Talk: 504 and Beyond</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><div><strong>Sami Schalk</strong>, Associate Professor, Gender and Women’s Studies, University of Wisconsin-Madison will be speaking on campus on Thursday February 23rd at 4:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building Room 132.  To RSVP for this in-person event, click on the website button below.</div><div><br></div><div>Drawing from the book, <em>Black Disability Politics</em>, this talk will detail the Black Panther Party’s involvement in the 1977 504 Sit-in, in which protesters around the country picketed and occupied government offices to urge passage of delayed regulations related to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Schalk will discuss the sit-in as an historical example of how Black cultural workers have engaged with disability as a political issue in ways that have sometimes been obscured in Black studies and disability studies alike.<br></div><div><br></div><div>This lecture is organized by the Dresher Center for the Humanities.<br></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Biography:</strong> <strong>Dr. Sami Schalk</strong> (she/her) is an associate professor of Gender &amp; Women’s Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is the author of <em>Bodyminds Reimagined: (Dis)ability, Race and Gender in Black Women’s Speculative Fiction</em> (Duke 2018) and <em>Black Disability Politics</em> (Duke 2022). Dr. Schalk’s academic work focuses on race, disability, and gender in contemporary American literature and culture. She also writes for mainstream outlets, including a monthly column called “Pleasure Practices” in <em>TONE Madison</em>. Dr. Schalk identifies as a fat, Black, queer, disabled femme and a pleasure activist.<br></div><div><br></div><div>Co-sponsored by the Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, and Belonging (I3B); and the Office of Accessibility and Disability Services.</div><div><br></div><div><div><strong>ASL Interpretation will be provided.
