    <Title>International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2021 (UN)</Title>

          <div class="html-content"><p>December 3rd is the <a href="https://www.un.org/development/desa/disabilities/international-day-of-persons-with-disabilities" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities</a>, honoring the United Nation's commitment for promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The day raises awareness of the political, economic, social and cultural aspects <span>of </span>disability <span>that </span>affects people around the world.</p><div><span>More than 1 billion people in the world have a disability. At fifteen percent (15%) of the world’s population, persons with disabilities account for the world’s largest minority. Furthermore, one out of every seven people is affected by disability.</span> </div><div><span><br></span></div><div><span>Read more from the WHO about <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/q-a-detail/why-is-the-convention-on-the-rights-of-persons-with-disabilities-important" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Why is the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Important?</a></span></div><div><br></div><div>The theme for IDPD this year is "Leadership and participation of persons with disabilities toward an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post-COVID-19 world."   The<a href="https://www.un.org/development/desa/disabilities/wp-content/uploads/sites/15/2021/11/SG-Message-Disability-FINAL.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Secretary-General's message on International Day of Persons with Disabilities is linked here</a>.</div><div><br></div><div>Working toward an accessible future is everyone's responsibility. We engage together to create a future which insists that people are not excluded due to their health conditions that create substantial limitations in how they engage with the world.           <div class="html-content"><strong>FACULTY - Apply for an Accessibility Inclusion Fellowship Opportunity </strong><div><br></div><div>Submit application by November 15, 2021. <div><br></div><div>The National Federation of the Blind via a Non-Visual Accessibility Initiate Grant from the State of Maryland has a great opportunity for faculty:</div><div><br></div><div><span>The Accessibility Inclusion Fellowship Program helps instructors begin to include accessibility
          concepts in at least one course offering in their institution with help from the nation’s blind.
          Your existing course does not need to have an accessibility component. </span><span>The program consists of
          the following: </span></div><div><ul><li>Individualized consultation and assistance with course instruction from the National
          Federation of the Blind through our Center of Excellence in Nonvisual Access (CENA) </li><li>Sharing of resources to enhance the accessibility of your course  </li><li>A monetary award. One award of $2,000 will be made to an instructor of a University
          System of Maryland (USM) school or a professor of an independent Maryland college,
          and two awards of $1,500 each will be made to Maryland community college instructors.</li></ul><div><strong><em>A brief document that outlines a streamlined application process is attached to this post</em></strong>.</div></div></div><div><br></div><div><div><em>What’s at stake? </em></div><div><br></div><div>Individuals with disabilities, including the blind, cannot live the lives they want without full and <span>equal access to the information and technologies available to the rest of the public, including </span><span>products, services and benefits available on the Web and mobile applications.   <Title>October is Disability Awareness Month</Title>
  <Tagline>Celebrate the diversity of disability</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><hr><strong>National Disability Awareness Month</strong> is  held 
    in October to raise awareness about issues that arise within the lived 
    experience of people with disabilities, and celebrates the many and 
    varied contributions of Americans with disabilities.<div><br></div><div>NDAM's
     roots go back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first 
    week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped 
    Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the 
    employment needs and contributions of individuals with various types of 
    disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed
     the name to "National Disability Awareness Month" to address inclusion 
    more broadly.<br></div><div><br></div><div>Americans 
    with disabilities make up almost one-fifth of our population, which 
    brings more celebration to this month, underneath the umbrella of the

Camp Jened, a ramshackle camp “for the handicapped” (a term no longer used) in the Catskills, exploded those confines. Jened was their freewheeling Utopia, a place with summertime sports, smoking and make-out sessions awaiting everyone, and campers experienced liberation and full inclusion as  human beings. Their bonds endured as many migrated West to Berkeley, California — a hotbed of activism where friends from Camp Jened realized that disruption, civil disobedience, and political participation could change the future for millions.</span></blockquote><br><blockquote><span>Crip Camp is the story of one group of people and captures one moment in time.   <Title>The Americans with Disabilities Act at 31</Title>
  <Tagline>Accessibility and Disability Inclusion Matter</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><p>The anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities reminds us, as a campus, to  celebrate all persons with visible and invisible disabilities, and remain committed to their equitable inclusion.</p><p>Since its enactment on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended, and its state-based equivalent statutory protections have provided protections for disability access and inclusion, prohibiting discrimination on the basis of disability in employment, in public accommodation, in public services, in transportation, and in telecommunications. Former President George H. W. Bush called the Act “a new birth of freedom” for Americans who identify as having a disability. This landmark civil rights law has changed society from benevolence towards disability to acceptance. While our campus, both by accessible design and accommodation, endeavors to provide equal access and inclusion for faculty, staff, students and visitors with disabilities, copious work remains, especially within external communities.</p><p>Maryland protects people with disabilities both in Title 20, State Government Article, and in Sections 7-701 to 7-710, Human Services Title. While these laws provide protections, they must be enforced and awareness must continue to be raised to promote equitable access and acceptance of persons with disabilities - on campus, on the job, and in the classroom.</p><p>Recently litigation in Baltimore City brought an assertion about a lack of curb ramps - raising awareness about federal accessibility requirements and the ongoing need for diligence.  On campus, curb cuts and accessible grading are described on UMBC's Accessible Route Map.  All construction and renovation on campus is designed to meet current accessibility requirements.  That being said, repair conditions and maintenance needs arise and should be reported to Facilities Maintenance via Work Control (410-455-2550, <a href="mailto:workorder@umbc.edu">workorder@umbc.edu</a>) or via a department's AIM request.  <a href="https://accessibility.umbc.edu/report-campus-accessibility-concern/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Accessibility concerns may be reported at any time via this linked online form</a>. The replacement of elevators in the Sondheim and Fine Arts buildings in 2021 will be a boost to campus navigation, especially for people with disabilities.  <a href="https://accessibility.umbc.edu/digital-content-accessibility/website-accessibility-at-umbc/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBC's Web Accessibility page (link)</a>, including information for reporting difficulty about digital content accessibility is also shared via the footer of UMBC's websites.</p><p>Additionally, all students with disabilities  - graduate, undergraduate, part-time, full-time -  may seek academic accommodation via <a href="https://sds.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Student Disability Services</a>.  Similarly, employees  - faculty, staff, graduate assistants, student workers, work-study - may <a href="https://accessibility.umbc.edu/employee-accommodation-request/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">seek work-related accommodations via Accessibility and Disability Services</a>.</p><p>Accessibility and Disability Services looks forward to working in partnership with UMBC's diverse and inclusive community to support equitable access to education,  and employment as we reflect on the growth of campus accessibility over the past 31 years.  </p><p>P.S. This annual event is designed to engage people around the world in talking, thinking and learning about digital access and inclusion for people with different disabilities. Additional information about GAAD is available at the link below.<div><br></div><div>Challenge yourself with the following events:</div><div><br></div><div><ul><li><a href="http://nomouse.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Take the No Mouse Challenge</a> - check out a favorite page without using a mouse</li><li>Check the accessibility of one of your papers or presentations - for <a href="https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/improve-accessibility-with-the-accessibility-checker-a16f6de0-2f39-4a2b-8bd8-5ad801426c7f" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Microsoft products </a>it's under the Review menu.</li><li>Image description matters - it must be meaningful - check out the <a href="https://alt-text-as-poetry.net/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Alt-Text as Poetry initiative</a> and see how visual content on a favorite website stacks up.. You can also go all-in with <a href="https://wave.webaim.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">an accessibility checker</a>.
