Intern of the Week: Taylor West

    <Tagline>Check out Taylor's internship!</Tagline>

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization Name): Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD)

Title of position: Health Equity Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

I am writing a policy analysis for the Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) on a mental health policy in Maryland with a health equity focus on one of the 5 Social Determinants of Health.

Day to day responsibilities look like attending meetings related to health policy grants, researching mental health policies in Maryland, and writing the different components of the policy analysis which will be my end product. I love researching mental health policy because it's very personal. Having the opportunity to identify gaps in the literature for my specific problem will be the basis for this policy analysis and potentially my dissertation topic!

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I attended Alternative Spring Break (ASB 2023) where I met the health equity director for Baltimore City that was on one of the panels we attended. I emailed him my interests and he offered to have me as an intern.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?

Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.).

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

I have enjoyed the freedom to explore policy analysis metrics (political feasibility, timeliness, cost, and effectiveness) through a health equity lens within Maryland and Baltimore City.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe I have made an impact by identifying gaps in mental health policy that need to be filled.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would say reach out if you are interested and be optimistic. Also, I would say network as much as possible.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

Intern of the Week: Zoonash Syed

  <Tagline>Check out Zoonash's internship!</Tagline>

    Current Class Level: Senior

    Semester of Internship: Summer 2023

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

Some of the responsibilities I am required to do include shadowing attorneys within the office, attending court hearings for cases/trials, reading and organizing cases, as well as reviewing body camera footage in order to help with case preparation.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I knew I wanted to have some sort of legal internship, and decided to ask my peers if they knew of any opportunities. A friend who graduated from UMBC let me know about MOPD, which led me to visit their website and notice that they had applications open for summer 2023 placement. At the time, it was nearing the end of the spring semester, so I applied and ended up getting the position!

How did you find your current experience?

Alumni Networking.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

The attorneys and staff at my office are all amazing, and have taught me so much about the legal field (in terms of public defense work). I've been able to ask many questions so that I can truly gain insight into a potential area of law I'm interested in. I also appreciate that I am allowed to participate in pretty much anything that I may find intriguing, such as specific cases or getting to witness interesting trials.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I was able to provide different perspectives while working as an intern, such as my thoughts on certain cases and the types of arguments one could make (in order to provide different viewpoints for the attorneys I was working with). I also reviewed body camera footage, which helped the attorneys that didn't have enough time to review it themselves (due to the high volume of cases they had on a daily basis).

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

You miss any opportunity you don't take, so always believe in yourself and try!

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

This opportunity gave me a realistic insight into the work life of a defense attorney, which has allowed me to reflect on the possible areas of law I may want to pursue in the future. It's an opportunity that simply can't be replicated through just reading about it online or in a book, and I'm thankful I was able to experience it myself!

These scams promise good pay for minimal effort, usually at home on your own schedule. The scams will ask for your information, including:

cell phone number and personal email address

Using all of this information, review your class schedule for the fall semester and make sure it still makes sense given the academic year you just completed (i.e., do you need to repeat a class? Are you enrolled in too many credits?).

Tip: If you have not registered for the fall semester and need advising assistance, talk to a departmental advisor or contact the Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising at oapa@umbc.edu.

Rather than letting fears or doubts hold you back, use them as fuel to drive your growth. Recognize that it's natural to have some uncertainty, especially if you're still developing your skills. However, don't let that deter you from stepping out of your comfort zone and taking advantage of the valuable opportunities that lie ahead.

To make the most of your internship, actively engage with your colleagues and supervisors. Be curious and don't hesitate to ask questions or seek guidance. By observing how experienced professionals work and seeking feedback on your own performance, you can accelerate your learning and gain valuable insights into the industry.

Remember that internships are not just about the work itself, but also about building connections and expanding your professional network. Take the initiative to connect with others, attend networking events, and seize any chance to learn from those around you.

Approach each day with a proactive mindset, actively seeking out new tasks and responsibilities. By demonstrating your eagerness to learn and contribute, you'll make a lasting impression and create valuable opportunities for yourself. Embrace the experience wholeheartedly, be proactive in your learning, and make the most of every moment."

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

Interviewers ask this question to get some insight into how you use certain skills to navigate specific situations.

It gives them a more realistic and nuanced view of how you function at work and tackle problems.

Interviewers can use this type of question to learn more about your skills in many different areas: teamwork, communication, customer service, adaptability, time management, and motivation.

How should I answer this question?

Start off by identifying the skill or quality the interviewer is inquiring about.

Choose the story of a time you demonstrated this skill.

Share the story in a concise way that focuses on details pertaining to the skill you are trying to highlight.

Conclude your answer by noting how you generally approach these types of situations that the interviewer presented.

How can I practice?

At the Career Center, we have many resources available to students to assist with interviewing and interview prep.

  <Tagline>Learning Continues After Graduation</Tagline>

Before you know it, your undergraduate education will come to an end.  You’re probably excited to say goodbye to papers, lab reports, and exams (unless you plan to attend graduate school)!

But learning does not have to end when you graduate; your educational journey could just be getting started.

In fact, lifelong learning can come in a variety of forms, including:

meeting and engaging with new people

traveling

community involvement

reading and keeping up to speed on current events

pursuing career opportunities, certificate programs, and picking up new hobbies!

Here are a few tips/resources to help you become a lifelong learner:

UMBC Graduate School: If you plan on pursuing an advanced degree, look no further! Visit the Graduate School website to learn more about our exciting program offerings!  Check out the Career Center’s website for more information and tips on applying to graduate school.

UMBC Division of Professional Studies: Do you already have a job lined up but are still interested in continuing your education? UMBC's Division of Professional Studies has courses, certificates and programs designed to fit the working professional’s busy schedule. Check out some of the upcoming events at our Main Campus or Shady Grove!

UMBC Training Centers: If you want to gain a new skill and need flexible and affordable options, you may want to visit our Training Centers. High quality, flexible, professional education and training opportunities are available year-round! Some courses are open to all individuals (no application needed)!

Remain active: Clubs/organizations are available outside of college! A simple Google search will direct you to various local activities where you can participate, take lessons from aerobics, to sports, or even learn a new language! Meetup.com is an excellent resource for connecting with people who share similar interests!

Build your brand: Our Career Center is not just for current students! Alumni can make connections through various services that the Career Center offers. Seek out professional development opportunities within your workplace, including conferences, workshops, mentoring programs, or leadership training. Now that you are in a real-world setting, there will be other skills you will need to learn!

Stay in touch: As your graduating class prepares to travel down different paths, you will have so much to offer one another as you gain further knowledge and life experiences. By staying in touch with former classmates, you may encounter opportunities to collaborate in work or network in a field different than your own. To start, you can join UMBC’s Chapter of Young Alumni, open to graduates of the last decade. Membership is free via the UMBC Alumni Association, which offers chances for networking and fun throughout the year. You can also participate in Retrievers Connect – an online platform that provides an opportunity for alumni to connect to support UMBC students, and connect with faculty and staff all in one space to support professional and career connections.

Don’t forget to join our LinkedIn to see where over 78,000 UMBC alumni are working!

Remember that life after college is what you make of it. Keep an eye open to the countless experiences waiting for you outside of UMBC. Your very next lesson may carry you through life!

    Hello Pre-Pharmers!

We just wanted to remind you that THIS Friday (5/12) is our last meeting for this semester. This time, rather than the virtual meetings we've had back to back, we are having an in-person General Board Meeting and it is from 12 PM - 12:50 PM (or may end earlier if time permits.) The location is Engineering 021.

This week's GBM will concern the classes that our president and vice president took for pharmacy school, and how their pathways (degree vs. no degree) differ in regards to the courses.

In addition, our new E-Board (executive board) will be officially announced during this GBM, so make sure to come and meet our new officers for the Fall 2023 semester!
