Today, I write to advise you that the deadline for sharing your ideas about UMBC’s strategic plan and pillars via this survey is Friday, April 17. You can choose which sections of the survey to complete. All responses are anonymous and confidential.
We also want to remind you to visit the strategic planning website and complete the feedback form on the homepage.
We encourage those of you who have not yet provided your thoughts to do so; your voice will ensure the UMBC Strategic Plan is as strong as it can be.

Strategic Plan Engagement Opportunities for Our Campus Community
Dear UMBC Community,
On behalf of the Strategic Plan Steering Committee, I write to remind you to share your ideas for strengthening UMBC’s strategic plan and pillars via this survey. The survey deadline has been extended from Tuesday, April 7, to Friday, April 17, to ensure as many responses as possible. You can choose which sections to complete based on your interests and experiences. Please note that each section takes approximately 10 – 15 minutes, and all responses are anonymous and confidential.
Our pillar subgroups have started posting engagement events in the myUMBC Strategic Planning group. The Transform Teaching and Learning pillar subgroup is inviting UMBC faculty to two events next week. On Tuesday, April 7, a Virtual Town Hall will be held at 4 p.m., which faculty can register for here. On Wednesday, April 8, an In-Person Town Hall for faculty will take place in Engineering 027 from noon to 1 p.m.

Important—Announcing the Strategic Plan Survey
Dear UMBC Community,
On behalf of the Strategic Plan Steering Committee, I invite you to share your perspectives on UMBC’s strategic plan via
this survey. The survey includes five sections, each aligned with one of the university’s strategic pillars. As a reminder, the pillars are:
- Cultivate organizational innovation and vitality
- Redefine excellence in research and creative achievement
- Strengthen Maryland and its communities
- Advance student opportunity and success
- Transform teaching and learning
You can choose which sections you would like to complete based on your interests and experiences. The survey is also designed to capture additional ideas you may have for strengthening these five focus areas. Please note that each section of the survey will take approximately 10 - 15 minutes to complete and all responses are anonymous and confidential.
We also invite you to visit the
strategic planning website for current information, including a new feedback form now available on the home page.
Finally, as our pillar subgroups prepare to introduce their engagement activities, be sure to follow the
myUMBC Strategic Planning group for information about scheduled engagement events. We will also continue to email the UMBC campus community about additional opportunities to engage in the planning process.

Strategic Plan Update and Campus Communications and Engagement
Dear UMBC Community,
On behalf of the UMBC Strategic Plan Steering Committee, I am writing with an update on our progress developing the strategic plan and to outline next steps for communications and community engagement.
The Five Strategic Plan Pillars and Subgroups
The steering committee and its five pillar subgroups have met this semester to advance our work. The work of each subgroup will be informed by the insights, expertise, ideas, and perspectives of our campus community members. As a reminder, the five strategic plan pillars are:
- Grow Student Opportunity and Success
- Transform Teaching and Learning
- Redefine Excellence in Research and Creative Achievement
- Cultivate Organizational Innovation and Vitality
- Strengthen Maryland and Its Communities
How to Stay Informed and Participate
Starting this month, the pillar subgroups will offer several engagement opportunities for the community. Here is how you can ensure you are updated and involved:
- Follow the myUMBC Strategic Planning group to receive immediate updates on planned community engagement activities as they are scheduled.
- Visit our updated strategic planning website. Starting this Friday, March 6, the site will feature a new feedback form to provide a direct way for you to share your voice with the committee.
- Look for brief, regular email reminders about strategic planning news beginning this Friday.
Thank you for your interest in this process. The Strategic Plan Steering Committee looks forward to engaging with you and receiving your valuable input as we continue this critical planning process.

UMBC Strategic Plan Steering Committee Update to the Campus Community
Dear UMBC Campus Community,
I am writing to share an update on our progress in developing the UMBC Strategic Plan.
The Strategic Plan Steering Committee has met three times this fall to advance our work on the five strategic plan pillars. These pillars were shaped by the feedback shared by our community in the Bold Conversations and Core Values survey. As a reminder, the five pillars are:
- Grow Student Opportunity and Success
- Transform Teaching and Learning
- Redefine Excellence in Research and Creative Achievement
- Cultivate Organizational Innovation and Vitality
- Strengthen Maryland and Its Communities
The strategic plan committee members have been divided into five Pillar Subgroups, each tasked with developing a plan for their particular pillar through the spring semester. Once the pillar plans are drafted, the committee will undertake several steps to ensure that the final UMBC strategic plan is ready to share with the community in the fall of 2026.
We will be seeking assistance from our community in developing these plans. Some of you may receive outreach in early 2026 to engage in planning; this outreach could be through a survey, focus group, or other method chosen by the pillar subgroups. I encourage those of you who receive outreach to engage in this important work on behalf of UMBC. It is essential that we hear voices from across campus and benefit from community expertise, perspectives, and ideas.
There will also be several opportunities for the larger campus community to share feedback. News about these opportunities will be posted in the myUMBC Strategic Planning group. Please follow this group as soon as you can to ensure you are in the know regarding events, activities, and forums led by the strategic plan committee to engage with you, because we want to hear from as many community members as possible to ensure that the strategic plan is our community's plan for the future.
I also want to note that the current strategic planning website will be updated soon. It is being redesigned to ensure easy access to strategic planning process key information. The new site will include an interactive timeline focusing on major milestones, a page with the steering committee roster, and a form to provide feedback.
Thank you in advance for your engagement and feedback in support of our UMBC strategic planning process. I am excited about what the coming months will bring in developing the plan, and I look forward to seeing you at related events.

Shaping UMBC’s Future: A Strategic Planning Conversation
Join President Sheares Ashby and Provost van Dulmen April 25
Dear UMBC Community,
We write to invite you to join our fellow members of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee as we host President Valerie Sheares Ashby for a conversation about the university’s strategic priorities. This is a key moment in our work to create the future we envision together for UMBC, and so we encourage you to join us, whether in person or virtually.
The event will be held at noon on Friday, April 25, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Fine Arts Building. If you cannot attend in person, you may attend virtually. Please RSVP by
clicking here by April 18.
At the event, President Sheares Ashby will share her thoughts on the high-level aspirations and directions that will frame the
strategic plan—themes that reflect the input of the community during the Bold Conversations, input we received in last fall’s Core Values Survey, and input the steering committee is receiving as they engage with the community.
This conversation about our future closely follows another important university event that I hope you will attend, the
April 23 session to hear your feedback on UMBC’s Middle States accreditation self-study. The self-study is an important part of the accreditation process, which reviews our progress and evolution as an academic institution. This review is an essential step in setting our course for the future.
We recognize there are many external factors at play that affect higher education and that policies and regulations are rapidly evolving. Those changes will not deter us from our mission or our vision for UMBC; in fact, this work is more urgent and valuable than ever, and we are eager to advance toward our shared goals for the university. We look forward to doing so in this special session with President Sheares Ashby on April 25. See you there!

Strategic Planning Fall Update
Dear UMBC Community,
As the fall semester quickly comes to a close, I write with a brief update on our work to develop the next strategic plan for UMBC. When I wrote to you in November about strategic planning, I noted that the input and feedback of the broad UMBC community is essential to the success of our plan. It is in response to your feedback that we have decided to expand the strategic plan steering committee to ensure a more comprehensive and representative body to oversee our work. The newly expanded committee, which I am chairing, comprises the following members:

- Shannon Tinney Lichtinger, Director, Institutional Research (strategic planning project manager)
- Lynne Adams, Associate Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer
- Aminah Amjad, Vice President, Graduate Student Association
- Crocetta Argento, Senator, Nonexempt Staff Senate
- Tanyka M. Barber, Chief Diversity Officer and Vice President, Institutional Equity
- Robert J. Bennett, Chair, Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee and Part-time Lecturer, English
- Meghna Chandrasekaran, President, Student Government Association
- Felipe Filomeno, Associate Professor and Director, Global Studies (Faculty Senate representative at-large)

This expanded steering committee met in early December for initial conversations with President Valerie Sheares Ashby, hearing directly from her about the value of a strategic plan and the opportunity before us now to chart a course for UMBC’s future. President Sheares Ashby shared with the committee her sense of the high-level aspirations and directions that will frame the strategic plan—themes that reflect the input of the community during the Bold Conversations.
We are also reviewing the nearly 800 responses we received to the recent Core Values Survey. Our thanks to all who participated; we are grateful for your engagement. Preliminary analysis of the results shows consistency with what we heard in the Bold Conversations, particularly around the shared values of inclusive excellence, student success, academic excellence, community engagement, and an innovation mindset.
We look forward to sharing more with you as this process progresses in the spring semester, including opportunities for you to continue to engage. In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy a wonderful holiday season.

Take UMBC’s Strategic Planning Survey by November 17
Share your thoughts on UMBC’s core values
Dear UMBC Community,
Last week, I was thrilled to share that UMBC is kicking off a strategic planning process this semester. This is an exciting opportunity for us to envision UMBC’s future together and determine how we can be a catalyst for progress in higher education. Your input is essential to this work; we will include the broad UMBC community in a variety of ways throughout this
year-long process.
Foundational to envisioning the future of any organization is understanding our shared values—the fundamental beliefs or principles that guide our core work, actions, and goals. To that end, we would like to invite all students, faculty, and staff to take
this short, anonymous survey so that we may assess the values important to our community. Please complete the survey by November 17.
