You can find information about them on the attached flyer.<br></div><div><br></div><div>Two groups starting within the next 2 weeks are:</div><div><br></div><blockquote><div><strong>Moving Forward with Purpose Group</strong> - a 5-week group teaching students strategies to improve their motivation and increase their sense of control or purpose in life.  Any students looking for help with "starting fresh" in 2021 or who are struggling with procrastination or career/academic indecision could benefit greatly from the group!</div><div><br></div></blockquote><blockquote><div><strong>You've Got This Group</strong> - a 4-week group the Counseling Center has run for several years now that has been very successful in helping students develop skills for coping with stress, anxiety, and depression.  Please consider it if you know of students who struggle with becoming easily overwhelmed or who find that emotional distress gets in the way of their academic success or personal well-being</div><div><br></div></blockquote><div>The other groups include <strong>Graduate Student Support Group</strong>, <strong>Trans Support Group</strong>, and <strong>Women of Color Support Group</strong>.     <Title>Sign Up by 02/08 for the First-Gen Peer Mentoring Program</Title>

          <div class="html-content"><div>In coordination with the First-Generation Workgroup, Off-Campus Student Services is incredibly excited to announce the First-Generation Peer Mentoring Program (FGPMP). </div><div><br></div><div>FGPMP is designed to support the success of current first-time and full-time first-generation students at UMBC.     <Title>Welcome to Spring 2021</Title>

          <div class="html-content"><div><strong>RENWAL | Living Well Aware</strong></div><div>As we begin the new year and the Spring semester approaches, it is a time of reflection. Many people take the beginning of a new year to review the past.  Others view it as a time of renewal.  Last semester was likely an academic experience like you’ve never experienced. </div><div><br></div><div><em>"Renewal is not just innovation and change. It is also the process of bringing the results of change into line with our purposes."</em> -- John W. Gardner</div><div><br></div><div>If you were happy with your Fall 2020 outcomes, now is the time to evaluate what aided in your success.  If you were not happy with your outcomes, it is a time to reflect on the challenges you experienced and determine what resources are available to enhance this semester.  With challenges, come opportunities for growth and learning.  If you didn’t succeed initially, you now have an opportunity to learn from the attempt and try again. Resilience is a hallmark of success.</div><div><br></div><div><em>"We don't even know how strong we are until we are forced to bring that hidden strength forward.     <Title>Marly Milic, '20, Political Science</Title>
    <Tagline>Honoring First-Generation College Graduates</Tagline>

          <div class="html-content"><h5><span>Congratulations to all our First-Generation College Student Graduates! </span></h5><h5><strong>In honor of December graduation, we'd like to introduce a few of our first-gen grads, in their own words: </strong></h5><div><strong><br></strong></div><div><p><span>My name is Marly
          Milic, and I came to UMBC from the </span><span>Baltimore
          Polytechnic Institute (Poly) to study Political Science as a Sondheim Public
          Affairs Scholar and member of the Honors College.</span></p>
          
          <p><span> </span><span>I
          chose UMBC because of a program I was in at Poly.  AP Seminar was a
          research program targeted toward non-STEM students and it gave us the
          opportunity to do research under the guidance of a faculty or staff member at UMBC. 
          Through this program, I met Dr. Jodi Kelber-Kaye (Honors College) who I came to
          find held a similar passion for Baltimore’s history and social/political
          context.  Her crash course lecture on race and class in Baltimore that she
          gave to my AP Seminar class left me wanting more and I decided that I had to
          come to UMBC for the semester long course that she offered on the
          topic.  </span><span> </span></p>
          
          <p><span>Additionally,
          my AP Seminar teacher and mentor, Thomas Gregg, is a UMBC alum.  Through
          him, I understood that I would be taken care of at UMBC.  I knew that it
          was a safe place that would nurture me and answer the questions that I had as a
          first-gen college student without judging me for having them.  I needed
          that reassurance and he gave me that.</span><span> </span></p>
          
          <p><span>I got
          so much support at UMBC.  The Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program
          always had my back.  I knew that if I had a problem that I could always go
          to them and they would help me find the answer.  On top of the Sondheim Program,
          the Political Science department is an extremely tight knit community.  I
          found a lot of friends there in both students and faculty and I can’t imagine
          what my experience would have been like without those connections and
          relationships.  Lastly, the Honors College is full of friendly folks that
          create this perfect holistic support network through a focus on
          interdisciplinary learning, out of the box problem solving, and a genuine care
          for their students.</span><span> </span><span> </span></p>
          
          <p><span>My on
          campus job at the Office of Institutional Advancement (OIA) had a major
          influence on my professional development.  At OIA, I stuffed thousands of
          envelopes, spent hours in the freezing cold, driving a golf cart, and filed
          countless documents into the office’s seemingly endless filing cabinets. 
          These seem like extremely mundane tasks, but they contributed to my
          understanding and love of systems, which is vital to the study of policy. 
          The smallest of gears adds to the overall efficiency of the grand machine and
          it takes creativity to see how the machine can be improved.  That
          creativity was fostered in me at OIA, where I was encouraged to pursue my crazy
          ideas about how to make certain things more efficient or organized and I was
          allowed to let my imagination really run wild with regard to how to improve the
          office.</span><span> </span></p>
          
          <p><span>Currently,
          I’m looking for a job.  I plan to take the Spring semester off because of
          COVID and to recharge.  I’ve been going full speed for so long, that my
          mind and body really need a break.  After my little break, I will continue
          with my graduate degree at UMBC in Public Policy.<span>  </span>I look forward to a career in public service.</span></p><br></div></div>

  <Title>Resolution for Evolution</Title>
  <Tagline>UMBC LSAMP Monthly Missive: January 2021 Edition</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><p>There are times in life when one experiences so many emotions at once, they become impossible to distinguish.  It’s like mixing all of the colors in art class, only to find a dark puddle of paint, no longer discernible as a particular hue, just darkness. </p><p>I started the day on January 6<sup>th</sup> pretty upbeat.  I was getting back into the flow of work.  I had a great holiday season, all things considered.  Things were good. And then, just before 3:00, the texts started rolling in.  “Are you watching this?” “ I can’t believe this.” “Yo this is crazy!” Confused I turned on the news to find something I never thought I’d see… armed insurrectionists breaching the U.S. Capitol.  And a U.S. President, like the scene in The Princess Bride, telling them to have fun storming the castle.  As I watched the events unfold, I had several thoughts. The first and most prevailing and persistent was how different this would play out if the Black and Brown people started a protest that turned into a riot that led to attempting to invade the Capitol.  I shudder to think of the carnage that would have ensued.  The longer it went on, the more I wondered, how is this possible?  How, in the epicenter of freedom and the citadel of democracy, can armed thugs, domestic terrorists gallivant around the Capitol building unchecked and undeterred?  How, in 2021, are we seeing a confederate flag being paraded through the rotunda? The answer is simple, white privilege. </p><p><em><span>“When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.”</span></em><span> – <strong>Franklin Leonard</strong></span></p><p>Privilege is defined as <em>a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group.</em> We see privilege but we’re told there is nothing to see here.  We feel that privilege but we are told that we are being too sensitive or playing the race card.  We are asked to choose to ignore what is obvious, what is clear.  The rules are different.  The system has been designed and perpetuated to greatly advantage some while it significantly disadvantages others.  That has always been true in America, America was founded on that principle and built on its benefits.  We have been told that the world is post-racial, but it is hard to unsee the realities that lay in stark contrast to that narrative.  So now what?  Many of you are asking yourselves the fundamental question, what do we do about it? More specifically, what can I do now?  It would be easy to say I don’t know; I don’t have all of the answers; you have to figure it out for you; or some other platitude that absolves me from any responsibility to help guide you as you grow.  I choose not to.  While I cannot give you the right answer for yourself, I can give you some ways to get to it. </p><p>1.<span>     </span><strong>Find your Purpose and your Passion.</strong> It doesn’t have to be what you are pursuing to make your living; it does have to be what makes you feel alive.  Own it. Commit to it. Work at it.</p><p>2.<span>     </span><strong>Help others.</strong> There are people that can use your help, in ways big and small.  Seek them out and offer your time or talents or treasure or all of the above.  I am not asking you to sacrifice everything for the cause or for the culture. But the time has passed to sit idly by. Life is not a spectator sport, that’s not me its Jackie Robinson.</p><p>3.<span>     </span><strong>Build and Strengthen your community.</strong>  Whatever that community is or looks like for you.  You need support and to support others.</p><p>4.<span>     </span><strong>Galvanize and Organize your efforts.</strong>  There is strength in numbers and power in different points of view.  Find people or organizations that align with your aforementioned passion and purpose and build with them.  Or start your own and build from there. </p><p><strong>5.<span>     </span></strong><strong>Take care of YOU. </strong> This is a lot on top of a lot coming behind a lot.  It may seem never ending, but it is not.  A new normal will emerge.  The world will reopen.  Between now and then, take care of yourself in real and tangible ways.  If you need help, get help.  If you need help finding the help, just say something, we are here for you.<strong></strong></p><p><strong>6.<span>     </span></strong><strong>Take care of Business.  </strong>You are here to get your degree.  You have persevered through pandemic, campus closure, zoom, all of it.  You may not be doing as well as you hoped you would, but you are still doing.  Keep showing that Grit and get this done.  The world needs to see the brilliance you have to offer.<strong></strong></p><p> </p><p>My better angel made a great point this morning.  In the movie Monsters Inc., the system is set up to be powered by fear.  They traffic in it, they power their lives with it, they refine their methods to extract it, they are even willing to break rules and laws to gather it.  And yet, (spoiler alert) in the end, they find out that laughter is 10X more powerful than fear.  What is true in the wonderful world of Disney is true for us too.  As you wrestle with your resolutions for the coming year, make one above all, if you haven’t, choose Joy.   </p><p> </p><p><em><span>“Your success and happiness lies in you.     <div class="html-content"><h5><span>Congratulations to all our First-Generation College Student Graduates! </span></h5><h5><strong>In honor of December graduation, we'd like to introduce a few of our first-gen grads, in their own words: </strong></h5><div><strong><br></strong></div>My Name is Mark Friedman and my major is Political Science with a minor in History. I attended Montgomery College in both Rockville and Germantown before UMBC.<div><br></div><div>I chose UMBC because prior to my last semester at Montgomery College I was contacted about transferring to UMBC. I wanted to finish at MC, since I wanted to wait before I decided about my future. But, I met with Tim Cox and was impressed with UMBC's program. </div><div><br><div>The people at UMBC who have been instrumental to my success were Tim Cox, Chelsea Moyer, and Dr. Dasgupta as were Caitlin Scheidegger, Abby Granger  and my professors. </div><div><br></div><div><span>During</span> the Spring Semester (2018). I had the experience of being a Legislative Aide with Delegate Aruna Miller in Annapolis.     <div class="html-content"><h5><span>Congratulations to all our First-Generation College Student Graduates! </span></h5><h5><strong>In honor of December graduation, we'd like to introduce a few of our first-gen grads, in their own words: </strong></h5><div><strong><br></strong></div><p><span>My
    name is Madhia Zaidi. I am graduating with a B.A. in Biological Sciences. I
    went to Howard Community College before UMBC. I was attracted to UMBC based
    primarily on the academic reputation for my major as well as knowing several
    others from my high school whom I respected attending here ahead of me.
    This university has a very strong school of sciences, and I wanted to
    study under the best minds in the country.</span><span></span></p>
    
    <p><span>The
    people that supported me while I was at UMBC were my family and friends. They
    helped me stay focused on my goals and supported me throughout my time at
    UMBC. I specifically want to mention my mother who stood next to me and
    pushed me to achieve my goals meanwhile she takes care of my kids
    relentlessly. </span></p>
    
    <p><span>I
    would say the experiences that helped me prepare for my goals after UMBC would
    be the lab classes and certain classes I took the last couple of semesters.
    They provided some hands-on experience that I feel is essential for acquiring a
    good job and help me grow as a person.</span></p>
    
    <p><span>After
    graduating from UMBC, I plan on applying to physician assistant school. I’m
    going to shadow some doctors and get some working experience before I apply so
    I’m better prepared for the next chapter of my life.</span></p>
    
    <p><span><strong>This
    picture is me with my daughter. She is my strength and because of my children I want
    to be successful and achieve my goals so one day they are proud of me. I read
    it somewhere “success is a journey not a destination” and absolutely love this
    quote. </strong></span></p><br></div>

    <div class="html-content"><div><p><span><span>“Virtual, but Valuable”</span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>28</span></span><span><span>th</span></span><span><span> Annual McNair Scholars Research Conference</span></span><span><span> </span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>Grad School Fair</span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>On the morning of Friday, September 18, 2020, the 28</span></span><span><span>th</span></span><span><span>
     Annual McNair Scholars Research Conference started off with a Graduate 
    School Fair, where the scholars were able to virtually visit the 48 
    graduate schools to learn more about </span></span><span><span>their
     different programs. This really served as a helpful way for the 
    scholars to continue on their graduate school journey, and to find 
    schools that would cater to their career interests. One scholar stated 
    that “the </span></span><span><span>grad
     school fair helped [them] connect with a handful of colleges that [they
     are] now applying to.” Another scholar said that they “loved the 
    graduate school information sessions as it allowed [them] to get a 
    better understanding of how to apply for Ph.D. programs and speaking one
     on one with program coordinators of the graduate school.”</span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>Networking Activities</span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>On
     Friday evening, the Conference Ambassadors hosted different networking 
    rooms for the scholars to attend and get well acquainted with each 
    other. The rooms included icebreakers, trivia, and </span></span><span><span>jackbox</span></span><span><span> games, where the scholars were able to relax and have fun while getting to know the other scholars in the process. </span></span><span><span>One
     room in particular, the icebreaker room which consisted of about 15 – 
    20 scholars, was a great place for the scholars to introduce themselves 
    and have conversations about how COVID-19 and issues of racial injustice
     has impacted them academically, professionally, emotionally, and 
    mentally.  These networking rooms </span></span><span><span>were amazing</span></span><span><span>
     and helped the scholars to enjoy themselves and spend time with their 
    peers before presenting their research on Saturday afternoon. One 
    scholar stated that they “</span></span><span><span>appreciated feeling engaged in the discussions as a group and the emphasis put on belonging as McNair Scholars being family.</span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>Saturday’s Keynote</span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>On
     Saturday morning, Mr. Michael Hunt introduced Dr. Jasmine Lee as the 
    keynote speaker. In her keynote, she walked the audience through her 
    college and life journey </span></span><span><span>to
     where she is now. During her keynote speech, the scholars learned about
     the importance of showing up for oneself, talking to oneself in a 
    loving way, and knowing one’s “why?”. Dr. Lee discussed the challenges 
    with how she saw herself as a young student, especially in math. She 
    also talked about how her career interests had changed from being a 
    teacher to pursuing a career in social work, which she stated, was 
    perfect for her. During her transition, she shared how she struggled 
    with being away from her first support group: family.  However, Dr. Lee 
    also talked about how she adjusted and overcame that challenge with the 
    help of supportive faculty, friends, and others who continually showed 
    up for her as a college student. Dr. Lee’s keynote served as a way to 
    encourage the McNair scholars as they continue on with their graduate 
    school and research journey, and to remind them the importance of having
     people around them who will support them and continue to push them to 
    achieve their career and personal goals.</span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>Research</span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>After
     the keynote, McNair scholars had the opportunity to share their 
    research through oral and poster presentations. There were 90 oral 
    presentations, and 30 poster presentations. There were many different 
    research topics that were presented and it helped to give the attendees a
     picture of what research is like. It also was valuable in helping other
     McNair scholars picturing themselves presenting their research in the 
    future.</span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>Conference </span></span><span><span>as</span></span><span><span> a Whole</span></span><span> </span></p></div><div><p><span><span>To
     conclude, the overall experience of the McNair Scholars Research 
    Conference was exceptional, and the conference did a wonderful job of 
    making the scholars feel like they belonged. A survey was done to gather
     information from the attendees about their virtual conference 
    experience. According to the survey, many of the respondents </span></span><span><span>reflected
     that the keynote presentation, networking opportunities, graduate 
    school fair, and the ability to connect with others in the conference 
    was most valuable to them. It seems that the encouragement factor was 
    most valuable for attendees. Furthermore, when asked what their favorite
     part of the conference was, about 27% of the respondents chose the 
    keynote presentation and the scholars’ presentations as their favorite. 
    Followed by about 25% for the networking opportunities, and 16% for the 
    graduate school fair. At the end of the conference, the scholars were 
    given an opportunity to share key takeaways from the virtual conference 
    experience. Overall, the scholars felt that the conference did a great 
    job placing emphasis on community. Although this year’s conference 
    experience could only be taken in with a computer screen, the love and 
    community support surpassed the virtual realm, and could be felt by 
    everyone who had attended. From the keynote speaker to the research
