Funding Your Graduate School Experience
In the second part of the event the speakers will talk about how to create and submit your application, for those who are already working in their application, they will offer their knowledge, review your application and make suggestions to make it stronger.
The National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) is available to students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and STEM education (includes some social sciences and psychology fields), and come with a 3-year stipend, worth more than $100,000 for your graduate education (Master's or PhD).
Our speakers, UMBC alums who have been winners themselves, have helped to produce several winners. You can be one of them!
The session is open to undergraduate seniors, specifically those from underrepresented backgrounds (Latinos/Hispanics, Blacks/African Americans, Native Americans, Native Hawaiias, Pacific Islanders).
This funding is limited to US Citizens, nationals or permanent residents.

Part 2 of this event will be hosted on Saturday, September 12, 2020 from 10 - Noon.
In coordination with the First-Generation Workgroup, Off-Campus Student Services is incredibly excited to announce the First-Generation Peer Mentoring Program (FGPMP).
FGPMP is designed to support the success of current first-time and full-time first-generation students at UMBC. Students that take part in this program can expect to meet other first-generation students and become a part of a large, supportive community that works to share resources, find lasting friendships and connections, and create an impactful college experience.
Participants of the FGPMP will also have the opportunity to take part in a series of activities and workshops designed to enrich students both personally and professionally.
Some additional benefits of taking part in the FGPMP include:
Developing transferable and marketable skills to enhance professional experience
Cultivation of leadership, self-management, and organizational skills
Improved communication and interpersonal skills
Greater self-efficacy and self-awareness

5 Things All College Students Should Know About UMBC Financial Aid Resources
Scholarship Retriever - the university’s scholarship portal allows new and current students to apply for institutional, endowed, and departmental scholarships all with one application. umbc.academicworks.com
FAFSA: Free Application for Federal Student Aid is filed every academic year in order to be considered for need-based federal, state and institutional grants, scholarships and student loans.
All UMBC students have an assigned Financial Aid Counselor designated by the first letter of their last name. Students may visit the contact webpage to identify their counselor.
There is a tool called theCost-Calculator that will assist students in calculating their educational expenses by evaluating expenses with all need-based and merit aid.
Maryland State Residents: The Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) awards grants and scholarships to Maryland state residents attending an in-state scholarships. Specialty scholarships such as Delegate & Senatorial Awards are not primarily based on financial need, however a FAFSA on file is required. Students should reach out to their local representatives to obtain application instructions.

New Dates for LSAMP Virtual Community Gatherings
Join us for community support and guidance!
Hello UMBC LSAMP Community!
We surveyed the community and received great feedback. Moving forward, we will have two sessions each week.
On Wednesdays, we invite Juniors and Seniors to join us between 11:00 am-1:00 pm. And on Thursdays, we invite Freshmen and Sophomores to join us between 11:00 am-1:00 pm.
In these sessions, the discussions will be shaped by the needs of those in the session. And as a reminder, feel free to come in for as little or long amount of time that you have available--even for a quick hello!
We will send out the WebEx information each morning as we have done in the past, so keep a lookout for the e-mail. Please remember you can call-in through the phone or computer. We look forward to seeing those of you who can join us.

Based on where students are in the process, we will bring in guest speakers to offer tips on the graduate school application process. These sessions are best suited for students applying to graduate school this coming fall. There will be two sessions each Friday, 11-12 and 12-1.
We understand that some of you might have class and can only join us for a portion of a session. That is ok!

These sessions are best suited for students applying to graduate school this coming fall. There will be two sessions each Friday, 11-12 and 12-1.

McNair Scholar Danilo Symonette
Onward to P.h.D studies
We are truly proud of our McNair scholar, Danilo Symonette, he has been selected for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program. In addition to the NSF GRFP which will financially support Danilo's graduate studies, Danilo has been admitted to the Computer Science Ph. D. programs at MIT and Stanford, and has also been offered a position at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab. All the hard work has truly paid off Danilo, again, congratulations!!
