    <p><span>The
MARC U*STAR Program at UMBC is a research training scholarship program for
undergraduate juniors and seniors majoring in the life sciences, physical
sciences, engineering and mathematics.  To be eligible for a MARC U*STAR
award, students must have an outstanding academic record, a strong desire to
pursue a Ph.D. degree and career in biomedical research or mathematics, and a
demonstrated commitment to increasing the number of persons from
underrepresented groups who pursue these goals.</span><span></span></p>

    <p><span>The
program provides MARC Scholars with individualized academic advising, guided
preparation for graduate school, continuous administrative support and
professional development activities to ensure a competitive edge in today’s
scientific arena.  Critical to this development is participation in a
sustained individualized research project that is conducted throughout the
academic year.  Under the tutelage of an approved mentor, this extended
research experience provides “hands-on” training while helping MARC Scholars
develop the critical thinking skills necessary to become a successful
researcher.  As a result, many of our MARC Scholars have co-authored
publications in peer-reviewed journals while still undergraduate
students.  Additional activities include opportunities to interact with
renowned research scientists, travel to national conferences and opportunities
to present their own research in a scientific setting.  These advantages
make UMBC MARC Scholars extremely competitive enabling them to gain admission
to the top PhD and MD/PhD programs in the country with 95% of our MARC
    graduates enrolling in a post-baccalaureate educational program.</span><span></span></p>

    <p><strong><span>MARC
Scholars</span></strong><strong><span> </span></strong><span>receive comprehensive academic and research support, and
are required to live in campus housing. To be eligible for MARC Scholar status,
applicants must have a minimum of 60 academic credits in addition to meeting academic
    performance standards.</span></p>

    <p><span>Students are
eligible to apply to the UMBC MARC U*STAR Trainee Program if they:</span></p><ul><li><span>Attend UMBC
full-time with a major related to the biomedical sciences (such as Biological
Sciences, Bioinformatics &amp; Computational Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry
and Molecular Biology, Biopsychology, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or
an approved Interdisciplinary Studies Major)</span></li><li>Have a
    minimum of 60 college credits</li><li>Have a 3.2
GPA each semester and a cumulative GPA of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale)</li><li>Plan to
pursue a Ph.D. and a career in biomedical or behavioral research or mathematics</li><li>Demonstrate
an interest in the diversification of the biomedical research workforce.</li><li>Are citizens,

student's PhD project is tailored specifically to his or her research
interests. Graduate students receive a $25,000 stipend, comprehensive health
insurance, and have their tuition and fees covered. That makes the total
financial package worth about $40,000 a year! The program trains students for

It will run from 5:00 pm Friday, January 31st to 5:00 pm Sunday, February 2nd, just after classes start. Space is limited, so <a href="http://www.globalgamejam.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">sign up now</a>!</p><p>For anyone who hasn’t participated, the global game jam is a 48-hour game development event, similar in spirit to a hackathon, with hundreds of host sites around the world. At 5:00 pm local time, introduce the jam and announce this year’s theme. Previous year’s themes have ranged from a phrase (“as long as we’re together there will always be problems”) to a word (“extinction”) to an image (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouroboros#/media/File:Serpiente_alquimica.jpg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">ouroboros</a>: a snake eating its tail), to a sound (the recording of a heartbeat). Participants brainstorm game ideas around the theme, form into teams, and spend the weekend building games that are designed to be both fun and express the theme.</p><p>The UMBC site is not restricted to just students. In previous years, we have had a mix of UMBC students, alumni, students from other schools, game development professionals, and just people with an interest in game development. You can get more information on game jams, the GGJ, and the UMBC site on the UMBC <a href="http://gaim.umbc.edu/global-game-jam" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Games, Animation and Interactive Media</a> web page.   </p><p>The UMBC site is limited to just 40 participants, so <a href="http://www.globalgamejam.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">sign up</a> early if you want to come. If you are not near UMBC, check the main <a href="http://www.globalgamejam.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Global Game Jam</a> site for a participating location near you.</p><p>The post <a href="https://www.csee.umbc.edu/2019/12/global-game-jam-at-umbc-2020/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Global Game Jam at UMBC, 5pm Fri 1/31 – 5pm Sun 2/2</a> appeared first on <a href="https://www.csee.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering</a>.<img src="null" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></p></div>

Design constraints for glass-based micro devices include low visibility when used in cells and organisms and non-specific binding of macromolecules to exposed glass surfaces, which often lead to reduced function. The objective of this study is to employ novel silanization strategies to modify glass surfaces to enhance visibility and biocompatibility. The specific aims of this study include (1) Covalently attach gold nanoparticles to glass surfaces to enhance visibility; (2) modify the glass surface with polyethylene glycol containing silanization agents to enhance biocompatibility. These aims were realized by coating the glass surface with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and gold-nanoparticles using EDC coupling chemistry. Successful modification of the glass surface requires that the glass surface be cleaned thoroughly to remove organic material from the glass surface prior to the coupling reaction. The glass surface is then silanized with silanization agents which are terminated with desired functional groups. PEG spacers link between the glass and the silanized gold-nanoparticles to coat the glass with a thin pink/purple layer of gold nanoparticles. Research to test the impact of the surface modification strategy on visibility and reduced non-specific binding of proteins to glass surfaces in model biological solutions and in zebrafish embryos is on-going.</span><div><span><br></span><div><strong>Linkedin: </strong><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/rose-zilberberg/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://www.linkedin.com/in/rose-zilberberg/</a></div></div></div>
