12th Annual Winter Student Leadership Retreat (WSLR)
You are invited to participate in the 12th Winter Student Leadership Retreat. The retreat is sponsored by the Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering at UMCP.
The purpose of the retreat is to provide an opportunity for underrepresented minority students majoring in engineering and other STEM majors to build their career, professional, and leadership skills; as well as to network with corporations and student leaders from 4-year colleges/universities and 2-year community colleges in the Washington-Baltimore-Annapolis area. Students who attend the following colleges and universities are eligible to apply to participate in this years’ retreat:
- George Washington University
- Howard University
- Johns Hopkins University
- Montgomery College
- Morgan State University
- Prince George’s Community College
- University of Maryland Baltimore County, and
- University of Maryland College Park.
There is no cost to students who are selected to participate. Representatives from the retreat sponsors listed below will facilitate workshops during the retreat. Two tracks of workshops will be provided, one for 1st-time attendees and another for returning attendees. Workshops to be presented include resume writing, interview tips, mock interviews, graduate school, and a corporate information fair.
We will accept 5-6 students from UMBC and we will provide transportation from Morgan to the retreat and back. Here is the link to registration: http://www.cmse.umd.edu/current/retreat
Registration has opened and students can register until December 18, 2017. Persons who are selected to participate will be notified no later than December 23, 2017.

Program Dates: May 29-August 4, 2018
Compensation: $5000 stipend, transportation to and from the program, lodging for the program, and food allowance.

WAVE FELLOWS PROGRAM
The WAVE Fellows program provides support for talented undergraduates intent on pursuing a Ph.D. to conduct a 10-week summer research project at Caltech.
The program aims to foster diversity by increasing the participation of underrepresented students in science and engineering Ph.D. programs. The program is extended, but not limited, to underrepresented minorities, women, first-generation college students, geographically underrepresented students, educationally or financially disadvantaged students, and students with disabilities.
Eligibility: Students must be current sophomores through non-graduating seniors and must be U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, or have DACA status. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required.
Competitive applicants will have prior research experience and can articulate how their research interests align with Caltech’s research areas.
Support: WAVE Fellows will receive a $6000 award for the ten-week program and an additional $500 housing/travel supplement.

AMGEN SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Caltech’s Amgen Scholars Program is geared towards students in biology, chemistry, and biotechnology fields. Some of these fields include biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, medical engineering, chemical and biomolecular engineering, and chemistry.
Eligibility: Students must be current sophomores through non-graduating seniors, must be attending a four-year university in the US at time of application, and must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. A minimum GPA of 3.2 is required.
Support: Amgen Scholars will receive a $6000 award, round-trip air transportation, campus housing, and a food allowance.

Seven students, faculty, and staff from UMBC attended the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) conference in Salt Lake City October 17 - 21, 2017. The students participated in various activities throughout the conference such as the GEM GRADLab, and culturally-relevant science discussions with mentors. The Maryland delegation included students from LSAMP and the board from the new SACNAS chapter on campus as well as mentors.
Participants will be attending the SACNAS 2017 conference in Salt Lake City, October 19-21, 2017 and will tweet about their experiences.

Maryland (USM) in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM), are invited to submit abstracts for the USM LSAMP Fall 2017 Research Symposium, which will take place at the University of Maryland, College Park on Saturday, December 2, 2017***
The 1st Annual University System of Maryland (USM) LSAMP Fall Research Symposium
provides
students with the opportunity to both view and present research through
poster, traditional oral, and TED-style presentations, while also
enhancing their scientific development and STEM identity. Registrants
will participate in the Graduate School and Resource Fair and network
with graduate schools, summer research opportunities, research and
graduate school funding, and more! This research symposium focuses on
supporting students in the science, technology, engineering, and
