McNair Scholar Recognition: Juwon Ajayi

<Tagline>Read about the summer research conducted by our scholars!</Tagline>

Introduction: Introducing our fellow scholar Juwon Ajayi, a recent McNair scholar of the REM 28 cohort. Juwon is currently a Junior, majoring in computer engineering. This summer, he has been given the opportunity to participate at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte Summer Program to Increase Diversity in Undergraduate Research (SPIDUR).

Juwon is currently working on developing an analytical program which will analyze an image taken from a Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). This will also be in correlation with utilizing machine learning to predict velocities, using data collected from fluid dynamics. We are excited to hear more about your research, Juwon! Always remember we are here to support you in any way we can. Keep striving and learning. We promise you, big things will happen.

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to develop a MATLAB code that will analyze the images taken from a Particle image velocimetry (PIV) set up. The images will be analyzed using crosscorrelation to generate velocity vector field. After completing this first process then develop a Machine learning (ML) algorithm that will be able to predict the flow of the particle from images taken from Particle image velocimetry set up. I am interested in implementing ML with PIV to analyze how accurate the ML model determines the flow of the fluid when relying on the input images from either computational or experimental results. Two research questions guide my research: First, how accurate the developed MATLAB code obtains the velocity vector fields compared to those from PIV results? Second, how accurate the develop ML model predict the flow field velocity values using the experimental/computational input data? For MATLAB, online courses and available resources in the research group will enable developing a simple, yet robust code. For ML, several courses are taken, and regression models on some sample data are being developed. The results of this research will be beneficiary to other researchers in the team to (1) educate them on how the cross-correlation in a commercial software (i.e., Dantec Dynamics for PIV) works and (2) how a data-based approach (i.e., ML) can use the physics-based data to obtain a faster and accurate prediction of flow fields.

Reddit, the self-proclaimed front page of the internet, has over 330 million active users globally that participate in an array of discussions. Conversations among individuals with competing views often turn hostile, and Reddit moderators must intervene by banning users or censoring posts. While simple and effective, these approaches fail to address the problem until it is too late. This project aims to detect and mediate online conflicts between Reddit users early on by developing a data-driven application. The project is comprised of three components: detection, intervention, and validation. We used natural language processing (NLP) to sense nuances in the language that are indicative of impending conflict by looking at previous posts and analyzing the linguistic cues. We then labeled the comments in the discussion with running averages and mapped the trajectories of the discussion. When impending conflicts are detected, we decisively facilitated intervention through the development of a politeness language generation model to recommend users with less offensive language to use during the discussion.

Dilly is a senior and is majoring in Financial Economics. As she finishes her final summer as an undergraduate, she is currently conducting an independent study with the McNair Scholars Summer Research Institute (SRI). Her research is centered around finding a relationship between government regulation and business expansion. On top of her independent research, Dilly is taking Calculus and has also traveled with us to various locations this summer such as the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Nevada! She is in her graduate school application process and we are excited to help her through any obstacle she faces! #umbcmcnair #umbc

https://mcnair.umbc.edu/dildora-salimjonova/

Abstract: Public sector corruption is prevalent across the different parts of the world. In this study, I examine the effects of public sector corruption on economic performances and quality of institutions. Using cross-country data for 129 countries, I show that the increase in corruption in the public sector reduces the quality of living, measured by income per capita, and reduces the degree of competitiveness in the economy. These results hold even after controlling for other potential determinants of economic growth such as workforce skills and trade openness. My work, thus, points to the importance of paying attention to corruption in the public sector and drafting policies to reduce its prevalence, both in developing and developed countries alike.

McNair Scholar Recognition: Milan Brown

Introduction: This is
our fellow McNair Scholar Milan Brown, who has been part of the McNair program
since 2018. Milan will be entering her senior year as an Environmental Science
and Geography major. As her final summer as an undergraduate, Milan has been
very productive, working with the Baltimore's Park as an environmental literacy
teacher! We are excited and are here to help you through your final year as an
undergraduate, and through your graduate school process, Milan!

https://mcnair.umbc.edu/milan-brown/

Abstract: Franklin Square
is a West Baltimore rowhouse community established in the mid 1800’s.
Developers donated a plot of land to the city of Baltimore in 1839 to serve as
a community space which became Franklin Square park. This project takes an
in-depth look at Franklin Square park through present-day and historic sources.
In the summer of 2018, in collaboration with community members, we surveyed
park trees to create an updated park map. We compared the updated map to a 1916
map displaying park features including trees. Following the completion of the
survey, we organized an event in the park for a group of students in an
afterschool program. We collected reflections on student views of the park
before and after the event. Analysis of student reflections were supplemented
with historic and present-day newspaper and popular media accounts of Franklin
Square Park. Despite indications that the physical quality of the park is
deteriorating through loss of trees and park area, student reflections suggest
that not only park features but also experience and memory shape park quality.
Our findings illustrate the importance of collaborating with community members
to incorporate an understanding of how a space is used when defining a quality
green space. The study contributes to the fields of community geography and
participatory research and increases our understanding of urban geography and
    environmental justice.

McNair Scholar Recognition: Danilo Symonette

<Tagline>Read about the summer research conducted by our scholars!</Tagline>

Introduction: It’s a pleasure to introduce Danilo Symonette, a current McNair Scholar who has been part of the program since 2018. Danilo is entering his final year as a Computer Science major. This summer he has had the opportunity to conduct research at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where Danilo's research was based around evaluating machine learning models in detecting struggle and confusion in voice data features. We are super excited to hear about your research at MIT, Danilo!

https://mcnair.umbc.edu/danilo-symonette/

Abstract: Teamwork skills are crucial to college students, both at university and afterwards. However, few tools exist to monitor student teamwork and to help students develop teamwork skills. We present a tool which collects the interactions of students who are using online platforms to complete a sustained task as a team; conducts a range of analyses of these data; and then presents information about team and team member behaviors in real time on a digital dashboard. This dashboard provides instructors with a user-friendly picture of team and team-member dynamics, which can also be made available, as appropriate, to both teams and team members. While some behaviors have been shown to be (or are self-evidently) beneficial or harmful to team performance, these data and analyses also make possible exploration of whether less obvious behaviors affect team outcomes and performance.
