Hi everyone
I have been at UMBC as an undergraduate student since Spring 2011 (as a transfer student from another campus) and I have seen great things in this campus. I'm a IS major. But that is not the point, the main point is the plus and minus grading system, the faculty is considering replacing the current grading scale with the +/- scale for the undergrads that would not only affect our GPA, but for our prospects in our careers as well! They include...
- Losing a perfect 4.0 GPA if this was implemented.
- Might not able to graduate with a minimum 2.0 GPA or above.
- Not able to earn academic honors (3.5 GPA for a semester honors, 3.75 for the - Dean's list, and 4.0 for the President's list).
- STEM majors might have a tough time getting a good grade, such as an "A+"
and so on...
If the faculty senate approves this and approved by UMBC President Dr. Hrabowski, then the student body will be outraged and upset about this move to implement +/- grading against our will for the entire undergraduate student body.
University of Maryland College Park have implemented it since the Fall of 2012 and the students there are not happy, but the faculty insisted that the plus and minus grading system is here to stay!
I have sent out e-mails to students and professors that I have known of to oppose +/- grading system for the undergrads, few people had replied. WAKE UP UMBC!! If you want your voice to be heard, I demand that you wake up and oppose this faculty takeover of our achievement due to the +/- grading, The student at College Park could not do this because of lack of coordinated input from the majority of people that attended that campus, we must not commit that same, grave mistake!
I know their are advantages to the +/- grading system, but this will hurt our GPA. As always, there will be some people that supports this move. For those who support this, I suggest you get on the right side of our history and the student body and staunchly oppose this move, I'm a staunch opponent of +/- grading scale. Tell your instructors and your adviser to never support the +/- grading scale implemented for the undergraduate community, seriously, always be serious in things you do not want in campus!
Please take a look at this link from the retriever weekly. Before you comment, I know there are discussions about this, and not enough comments to make a difference.
Please oppose +/- grading system directed towards the undergrads.
