Oppose the +/- Grading Scale - Fall 2013 post
An update post on stopping the +/- grading scale
posted over 11 years ago
Hi everyone
I'm posting this topic again because the previous discussion's momentum has faded away. We need to rejuvenate UMBC's opinion against plus/minus grading scale directed towards the undergrads, or else abolishing it will prove to be difficult and we'll lose our will against these faculty decision makers that tries to impose their agenda against us, which is the faculty senate! I have posted a website linking to the previous discussion of plus/minus grading scale. I hoped this time, the possibility of implementing +/- grading scale for the undergrads will be more noticeable and we'll unite the student body against this deadly plan. Not only this plan is controversial for the undergraduate student body, this implementation...
- Causes students to lose their perfect 4.0 GPA that they have fought for many semesters.
- Causes students who are doing barely minimum to be placed at academic probation if their cumulative GPA is at a bare 2.0 (since C- is weighted at a 1.7).
- Causes students to not earn academic honors.
- Causes students to lose their scholarship or financial aid!
This +/- grading scale needs to be stopped at any costs! Since the faculty uses the input of their colleagues, but not the majority of the student body, we need to voice our objections against this, think about it. At the previous discussion, some people dissented my views and went at the opposite direction, supporting plus/minus grading scale. For those who support this +/- scale, think about your friends who might not benefit from +/- grading system. Some of you suggested that UMBC should have an "A+" as part of the +/- grading scale (which is weighted at 4.3). I appreciate this concern and if in case the faculty pushes the +/- grading system to replace the old grading system, they should use an "A+" as part of the new grading scale.
You can vote on this poll if you either oppose or support the plus/minus grading scale. I'm leaving the comments to you to voice your opinions. Remember, this is an another post for the purpose to spread awareness of plus/minus grading scale. Since my previous post lost momentum, we must make sure this topic gets the attention of all of the faculty members and the student body. Other universities around America that implemented this new system has met huge opposition and the plus/minus grading scale still stands as of today. WAKE UP UMBC!! Don't let our campus succumb to this +/- grading scale.
