Asian Studies Fall 2023 Advising Guide

Advising appointments and the class schedule are now available for Fall 2023! 

Current students are able to register in advance for fall classes and to make an appointment to plan their semester's schedule, and discuss any other plans they might have for the Fall 2023 session. 

Three Easy Steps to Prepare for Advising!

1. Look at your Degree Plan in your myUMBC profile to learn what classes or requirements you still need to complete for your degree program.
   The complete Schedule of Classes for Fall 2023 is available here; Asian Studies will also soon have a list on our website of classes that specifically count towards Asian Studies degrees - stay tuned!
2. Look at your Student Account in your myUMBC profile – do you have an account hold? Holds can be placed for several reasons, but most of them will prevent you from being able to register for classes. Contact Student Business Services for more information about resolving an account hold.
3. Sign up for an advising appointment with your advisor. Dr. Oyen advises Asian Studies students - see below! 

Advising Appointments

ASIA majors who need an advising appointment should fill out this Google Form first. Students who have a straightforward plan and do not need assistance will receive clearance once they complete the Google Form. 

Students who’d like to speak with an advisor can make an appointment with Dr. Oyen - see the available times via her Calendly page.

UMBC Closed Dec 23-Jan 2

In observance of the end of the year holidays, UMBC is closed from Friday, Dec 23 through Monday, January 2. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to responding to any messages or inquiries which arrive during this time upon our return to campus in the new year! 

Thinking of Study Abroad? Fund for Education Abroad Apps Open Soon!

If you're thinking about a study abroad program for the coming academic year, the Fund for Education Abroad scholarship can help you reach your goal! 

Applications for this scholarship open on July 1. Any undergraduate student who is a US citizen or permanent resident is eligible to apply, and the funds can be applied to any study abroad program that's eligible for UMBC credit. The deadline to submit your application is July 15. You can learn more about the FEA scholarship in this myUMBC post from Global Studies! 

Fall 2022 Advising Still Available!

Are you a current student who still needs advising and registration clearance for Fall 2022? It's not too late! Make an appointment with Dr. Oyen for your clearance - learn more on our website. 

New students who are starting their first semester at UMBC this fall will have an opportunity to register for classes at their orientation session this summer! 

Asian Studies Office Summer Hours

The Asian Studies office (Fine Arts 548) is open 8:30am-1:30pm, Mon-Thurs, this summer. We will be working remotely in July, but are available any time via email. 

We'll be in person again in August. If you are on campus prior to the start of class, feel free to stop by and say hello! 

As spring continues to roll across Maryland, it's also in full swing elsewhere around the world. Even if it's dreary today here on campus, you can always take a few moments to tune into part of this archived stream from China's CGTV channel of last year's scenery around the Huanghuacheng section of the Great Wall of China.

Advising and Registration for Fall 2022 are Ongoing!

Advising and registration for Fall 2022 is underway. If you have already had your advising appointment, great - thank you! If you still need to schedule one, that's okay! Learn more about signing up for Fall 2022 classes on our website, or check out our myUMBC notice. 

Remember: you must have your advising clearance from Dr. Oyen before you can sign up for classes. If you're not sure what classes you want to take, it's okay to think about it and complete your registration later - talk to Dr. Oyen about your options at your advising appointment! 

Tomorrow: Lecturer Candidate Presentation - 11am

We hope that you'll be able to join us as we welcome a faculty candidate to campus tomorrow. The candidate will give a presentation entitled "What is Asia?" at 11am in Fine Arts 558. Students are welcome to attend in-person or via WebEx online; in-person attendees will receive a free boxed lunch and, if they'd like one, an Asian Studies t-shirt. Summer Registration is Ongoing!

Thinking about a summer class, but haven't signed up quite yet? There's still time! Visit the Summer Session website to learn more about course offerings, financial aid, and other important details about catching up or getting ahead during the summer term. Dr. Oyen can also help you with any summer session questions during your Fall advising appointment.

Study Abroad Application Deadline - Thursday!

If you are planning to participate in a study abroad program, UMBC's application deadline for Summer 2022, Fall 2022, and academic year 2022-23 programs is Thursday, March 10! If you have not yet completed the steps indicated in this myUMBC post from the Education Abroad office, be sure to do so as soon as possible. 

Programs that start in or after Spring 2023 have a separate deadline - the Education Abroad team can help with any questions or concerns you may have. 

USAJOBS Info Session and Application Tips - Thursday!

If you're considering a job with the federal government after graduation, you'll need to know how to use USAJOBS. From decoding the sometimes technical and confusing language in the job listings, to tailoring your resume and responding to online questionnaires, Thursday's online session will give attendees a good foundation for their future federal job searches. Learn more, and find out how to sign up, at the Career Center's myUMBC page.

Paid On-Campus Internships with Democracy and Civic Life

Thinking about an internship for the next academic year? Consider one of the three paid opportunities available from UMBC's Center for Democracy and Civic Life! The full-academic-year internships require a 15-20 hour/wk commitment, on average. The deadline to apply is April 4, 2022 - for more information, view the Center for Democracy and Civic Life's myUMBC post.

Online Conversation: Russia's Invasion of Ukraine

The Annual Student Fee Forum takes place this year on Friday, March 4, at 2pm. Learn about the plans for 2022-23 academic year tuition and fees, and share your thoughts or concerns about the proposals with campus leadership. Given the ongoing impact of Covid-19 and other global events, your voice in this conversation is more important than ever.

Save the Date: Author D. Watkins Virtual Event, April 6

Baltimore native D. Watkins will visit campus virtually on Wednesday, April 6, from 4:30-5:30pm, to discuss his book We Speak for Ourselves: How Woke Culture Prohibits Progress. The event is part of this year's UMBC Community Read. Lunar New Year is coming! The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York is hosting a festival this weekend to celebrate, with a day of special programming available for free online! See the schedule on their website for more information.

It's the last week of classes for Fall 2021. There's still a lot happening on and around campus, though, so if you're feeling overwhelmed with studying and classes, take a minute and check out some of these events! 

COVID Booster and Flu Shot Clinic - Wednesday, Dec 8

Retriever Integrated Health is hosting a COVID-19 Booster and Flu Shot clinic at the RAC on Wednesday, December 8 (tomorrow!). Registration only takes a minute. Get your booster now, and help to fight the spread of COVID-19 on campus and in your community at home! 

Gamelan Concert - Friday, Dec 10

UMBC's Gamelan Ensemble will hold its concert this Friday, December 10, from 5-6pm in the PAHB's Music Box Theatre. Admission is free - due to COVID-19 restrictions, space may be limited, so don't miss your chance to see these unique and beautiful orchestras! 

UMBC Anime Society Presents: Fall 2021 24 Hours of Anime Marathon - Friday, Dec 10

Finals Stressbuster Tips and Events

• Looking for someplace quiet to study, and all your usual haunts in the library are packed? SGA has shared some additional options that will be available for students over the next few weeks. 
• UMBC's First-Gen Network is hosting a De-Stress Zone in the Commons Sports Zone on Monday, December 13, at 2pm. Stop by for snacks, games, and study tips! More information is available on myUMBC, here. 
• If you live on campus, don't miss RSA's famous Midnight Breakfast event at True Grit's on Monday, Dec 13, at 11pm!

Here on campus, we were fortunate to get about a week of full autumn color and mild weather before winter started arriving, and the semester is in full swing. There are only a few weeks left before finals, so be sure to take advantage of everything happening on campus!

Remember: you do not need to sign up for classes right away after your advising appointment. As long as you have met with your advisor, you can register at any time. Please let us know if you have any questions. 

Virtual Lecture with Angie Kim - Tomorrow, 4:30!

Join the Dresher Center, MLLI, and Asian Studies in welcoming novelist Angie Kim to campus virtually for a discussion of her book, Miracle Creek! The online session will take place 4:30-5:30pm on Wednesday, November 17. For more information, and to RSVP, visit MLLI's myUMBC page. 

Info Sessions - Joining the Residential Life Team

Residential Life is hosting three information sessions - tonight, Nov 22, and Dec 1 - for students who are interested in being Resident Assistants (RAs), Desk Managers (DMs), or Maintenance Assistants (MAs) during the 2022-23 academic year. Selected applicants receive a single room in on-campus housing, a meal plan, and a small cash stipend.
