As we approach the closing week of Pedagogy Study Hall,we invite you to join us for a final slate of public programs with Tomashi Jackson and Nia K. Evans, featuring guest scholars, civic advocates, and artists. All events are free and open to the public.

Roundtable on Education History and Policy, Part II

Davarian Baldwin and Matt Cregor regroup for the second in a series of compelling discussions on education history and policy, hosted and moderated by Tomashi Jackson and Nia K. Evans. The first roundtable in the series, produced as a CADVC webinar, is accessible here.

Community Advocates in conversation with Nia K. Evans of the Boston Ujima Project

Dr. Meleny Thomas, South Baltimore Community Land Trust, and Lawrence Grandpre,  Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle, in conversation with  Nia K. Evans, Boston Ujima Project. The Boston Ujima Project is a democratic, member-run organization building a cooperative business, arts, and investment ecosystem, with the mission of returning wealth to working-class communities of color.

"Talk/Draw" drawing and discussion session with Nia K. Evans, Tomashi Jackson, and Eric N. Mack. DJ: M'Balou Camara

Join a discussion on investment and disinvestment in the arts and humanities as reflections of broader civic and economic structures with invited guests. Participants will be invited to draw in response to the conversation, and leave their drawings on exhibit in the gallery.

This program is presented in connection with "Pedagogy Study Hall," a research project, exhibition, and publication by Tomashi Jackson and Nia K. Evans exploring the structures that sustain our cultural and educational systems.

Baltimore Cultural Organizer and National Cultural Agent, Denise Griffin Johnson, introduces audience members to her distinctive style of participatory storytelling, leading participants in a meaningful story-sharing circle event grounded in best practices for community-building communication and inspired by the themes of the Pedagogy Study Hall exhibition.

Denise Griffin Johnson is a Baltimore native and a leader in cultural organizing. She co-founded CultureWorks in 2008, spearheading a major community-led initiative in West Baltimore. As a National Cultural Agent with USDAC, she has led national and regional discussions on justice, belonging, and storytelling. She has collaborated with UMBC and Lafayette College on cultural and economic initiatives and has helped secure over $4 million for West Baltimore's cultural projects. Denise holds a Master of Science from Coppin State University with postgraduate training in Clinical Counseling. She has co-authored academic publications and contributed to major media discussions on community transformation.

In collaboration with policy analyst and economic advocate Nia Evans, Tomashi Jackson’s “Pedagogy Study Hall” project will host a series of intermedia series of public discussions about investment and disinvestment in the arts and humanities, looking to Baltimore as a critical case study in grassroots organizing in a system of gross structural inequity.

Baltimore offers a critical forum for exploring a range of formal and informal organizational approaches to arts education and community development through the arts. It also provides an important model for exploring informal cultural economies that support local art education and production in the interstitials between, and in the absence of, major financial investment.

February 25, 6-7pm: Conversation with Tomashi Jackson and Nia Evans, Lion Brothers classroom, downtown Baltimore.

Race Stories: Celebrating Maurice Berger launches the Maurice Berger CADVC Program Fund, in support of the exploration of, and research into, histories of race, representation and justice in visual culture, with the goal of creating accessible public programming. The event also celebrates the publication of “RACE STORIES: Essays on the Power of Images,” a collection of Berger’s award-winning essays co-published by Aperture and The New York Times, featuring speakers such as  Aruna D’Souza, Marvin Heiferman, Sarah Elizabeth Lewis. Lowery Stokes Sims, Maleke Glee, Timothy Nohe, and others.

A reception will follow the program.
