Why did you choose to major in INDS?

INDS offered the opportunity for me to curate and claim my education, blending my passions for creativity, social change, and entrepreneurship. Now, as a creative director, artist, and leader, INDS represented a stable platform to prepare me for a career in creative entrepreneurship, aligning my education with cultivating community.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?

My vision, informed by my INDS journey, is to design and contribute towards systems of care that empower emerging voices while reimagining how arts infrastructure can serve the cultivation of communities. Following graduation, I'm looking to continue working on my non-profit organization that aims to facilitate and advocate for participatory action through creativity and the arts.

Were you involved in any clubs or organizations? Did you hold any leadership positions? URCAD? URA? Off-campus internships? On-campus research experiences?

A SHARED STORY OF DISTANCE (2023)
by UMBC Student Giovanna Orfali (Visual Arts, '26)

"A hybrid short film that captures the connection between a Brazilian mother and daughter living nearly 5,000 miles apart. Blending real voice messages with intimate point-of-view visuals, the film gently explores love, memory, and the quiet ways we remain close across distance."

BRIEF TENDER LIGHT (2024)
by Arthur Musah and Brook Sitgraves Turner

"Ukrainian-born Ghanaian filmmaker Arthur Musah follows four African undergraduates through MIT, America's premier technological university and his alma mater. The students embark on their MIT education with individual ambitions – to engineer infrastructure in Tanzania; to secure a better life for family in Nigeria; to contribute to post-genocide reconstruction in Rwanda; to advance democracy in Zimbabwe. Their missions are distinct, but fueled by a common goal: to become agents of positive change back home.

While their dreams are anchored in the societies they have left, their daily realities are defined by America – by the immediate challenges in their MIT classrooms, and by the larger social issues confronting the world beyond those classrooms. Their new environment demands they adapt. Over an intimate, decade-long journey spanning two continents, students and filmmaker alike are forced to decide how much of America to absorb, how much of Africa to hold on to, and how to reconcile teenage ideals with the truths they discover about the world and themselves."

    Abstract:
Drawing on two decades of research, this presentation examines how the U.S. detention system operates through—and benefits from—chaos, producing disordered geographies that obscure responsibility and extend confinement. It shows how this manufactured disorder enables and conceals the system's core profit-making logics, where expansion is driven less by policy effectiveness than by opportunities for revenue generation. Companies providing food, medical care, commissary goods, and oversight mechanisms generate income through confinement, creating webs of economic dependency that blur public and private boundaries. The presentation also considers how recent shifts in immigration enforcement are fueling explosive growth in immigrant confinement and concludes by outlining strategies to cut through the chaos and disrupt the financial logics sustaining detention's expansion across the United States

We are excited to share a new opportunity from the Scholar Strategy Network's DC/MD chapter: the Academics in Annapolis Cohort, a structured and supportive way for you to contribute to real-time debates during the upcoming Maryland General Assembly session (January-March 2026).

The cohort is designed for academics (defined broadly!) at any level of experience with policy engagement—whether you are new to legislative advocacy or already active in this space. Participants will receive training (as needed), be connected to advocacy partners, and choose from a range of flexible ways to contribute during the session. The time commitment is minimal, but your impact would be much greater.
