Please Sign this Petition to Save Humanities Departments at Montclair State !

    <Tagline>Protect Humanities Departments from Short-Sighted Cuts</Tagline>

Dear Members of the Ancient Studies Community and the UMBC Community,

Montclair State University is planning to eliminate all of its Humanities Departments. This short-sighted action makes it more difficult for students who attend Montclair State to attain a broad and deep understanding of themselves and the world around them through the study of the Humanities. It defunds and otherwise hampers faculty members who teach subjects in the Humanities.

The move undervalues and marginalizes Humanities education as an intrinsic good which enables students to reason logically from evidence, think critically, and speak and write clearly and effectively. Humanities education trains students to distinguish truth from lie, reality from fiction, right from wrong, just from unjust, public from private good, democracy from autocracy, and constitutionality from lawlessness and violent chaos. The study of the Humanities cultivates humane emotions in ways other disciplines do not. It should not surprise anyone that the basic capacities of educated people are in such short supply today.

We ask you to sign the petition and to pass it on to whoever you think would be interested in signing it too

My research explores the community-driven efforts of historical preservation, environmental revitalization, and social justice in Turner Station, Dundalk. Once a hub of industrial activity and a landmark of African American and civil rights history, Turner Station provides a powerful framework for examining the impact of grassroots, community-led initiatives in education and revitalization, as well as the vital role of public libraries as hubs for hosting organizations and public programs that serve to preserve local history.

Stephanie Patrizio (she/they) is a 2025 graduate of UMBC's Visual Arts program. Originally from Crofton, Maryland and now based in Youngstown, Ohio, Stephanie explores the intersection of the fine arts and humanities with social and environmental justice. Inspired by the goals of the Pedagogy Study Hall project, their research highlights the work of dedicated community members in Turner Station, Dundalk, and their amplified efforts to preserve local history through archival materials, creative expression, and environmental advocacy.

They received their BFA from the University of Maryland Baltimore County and are currently an New Genres MFA candidate at UCLA. They also collaborate with communities and students as a designer to create zines preserving Baltimore public history.

Nicole King is a professor in the Department of American Studies and co-director of the Orser Center for Public Humanities at UMBC in Baltimore, MD. She is an editor of the book Baltimore Revisited: Stories of Inequality and Resistance in a U.S. City (Rutgers University Press, 2019 - which features a photo by Cullins on the cover) and co-founder of the Baltimore Traces: Communities in Transition public humanities project. She is currently working on The Ungentrifiable City, a book project focusing on a history of holdouts–the residents and small business owners who challenge extractive development on Baltimore's westside from the 1970s to today.

Tomashi Jackson is an interdisciplinary artist whose work merges painting, printmaking, video, and performance with research into histories of policy, segregation, and civil rights.
