Why did you choose to major in INDS?

I chose to major in Individualized Study because no single traditional major fully captured my interest in criminal justice. My passion spans law, psychology, sociology, and political science, and INDS gave me the freedom to combine them into one focused degree that aligns with my career goals.

What are your plans for after graduation, and how do you see using your INDS degree?

After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in criminal investigation. My INDS degree gives me the flexibility to explore multiple paths, whether that's earning a Crime Scene Investigation certificate, entering a forensic-adjacent role, or continuing my education through graduate school. The interdisciplinary nature of my degree means I'm not limited to one track, which I see as a strength in a field as broad as criminal justice.

Understanding and Defining Multiple Literacies and Their Implementation in Higher Education in Prison Programs

Elaine MacDougall, Assistant Teaching Professor, English

While prison education programs have largely been proven to be beneficial to the participants, we need to critique and define distinctive prison literacies and the pedagogical practices we utilize and learn from in our classrooms. Implementing a broader view of higher education and literacy in prison could help expand previous understandings of literacy and how it is inextricably linked to "societal and historical forces beyond the classroom.". In analyzing the data from semi-structured interviews, writing teachers in prison education programs can open up a dialogue and learn about the effectiveness of various literacy-based prison education programs, as well as specific writing classes, and how these programs can best serve the student participants while inside the prison environment, as well as upon their release.

AND

The Inevitable Sprouting

Ghazal Mojtahedi, Doctoral Student, Human-Centered Computing

In mid-January 2026, millions of people across Iran took to the streets demanding freedom and an end to authoritarian rule. The protests were met with lethal force, and many demonstrators were killed by live ammunition. In the aftermath, authorities attempted to suppress information about the victims. In many cases, the names of those who were killed were not officially acknowledged, and families were discouraged or prevented from publicly mourning. In response, citizens and activists began voluntarily collecting and sharing the names of victims through informal networks. This collective act of gathering and preserving names became itself a form of resistance and civic witnessing. This project engages with datasets of names connected to these events, including records that remain uncertain or incomplete. Rather than presenting this information through conventional charts or statistics, the work translates the data into a living process. Seeds are planted to represent individuals whose fate remains unconfirmed or whose names have been partially erased from public record. As the seeds grow over time, the installation becomes a living visualization of absence, uncertainty, and collective memory.

Change in Dresher scholarly research fund applications for remainder of this Academic Year

Due to budget constraints, the Dresher Center is changing how we will award scholarly research funds for the remainder of this Academic Year. Instead of rolling deadlines and rather than applying to our three distinct research funds (development, completion, and teaching faculty funds) we are implementing these guidelines.

One deadline for all applications: April 21, 2026.

One Research Fund for all applicants.

Priority will be given to Humanities faculty (full-time, tenure track/tenured faculty and teaching faculty) and LLC PhD students. MA students, part-time faculty in the Humanities, and faculty in other disciplines engaged in Humanistic work may apply but will be assigned lower priority

Amount: Awards will generally be no more than $1,000 depending on the number of applications. A budget is required.

Eligible expenses: Priority will be given to expenses related to the completion of humanities publications and projects; research travel and expenses directly advancing publications and projects in the humanities; and related expenses to produce humanities scholarship directly related to promotion and tenure.

Use of award: expenses must be incurred BEFORE August 20, 2026.

A letter of need explaining the purpose for the funds, the precise amount of the request, and why this support would make a difference in the scholarly goals of the applicant. Reference should also be made to why no other DRIF, departmental or CAHSS support is available or sufficient to this need.

A brief memo (1-2 paragraphs) of support from a Chair or Graduate Program Director noting that all available departmental and CAHSS funds have been tapped first.

Join us for our end of the year Celebration & Awards!

Asian Cultural Celebration & Awards

Thursday, May 14, 2026

5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.

University Center Ballroom 3rd Floor

This celebration commemorates the achievements of graduating UMBC students while celebrating the vast cultural diversity of Asian communities and heritage on our campus. We recognize the difficulty of choosing just one identifier or term to capture the vast diversity of all people with heritage in the Asian continent, representing 49 countries and hundreds of cultures. We seek to honor the breadth of experience of people across Asia - East, South, Southwest, West, and Central Asia.

During the gathering, we'll enjoy food together, we'll showcase keynote speakers, student musical and dance performances, and award presentations to honor student contributions, as well as the faculty and staff who've contributed to their success.

Light refreshments and appetizers will be served starting at 5:30 pm for all guests in attendance.

Graduates must check in no later than 5:45 p.m. The program will begin promptly at 6 p.m.

Dress code: We encourage all attendees and graduates to dress in their "celebration best." While cap and gown are not required, we would be thrilled to see attendees embracing cultural attires.

If you would like to nominate a community member for one of our Affinity Celebration & Awards, you may nominate them here using the Awards Nomination Form or https://forms.gle/TLH8uDwccy5gBJtj8.
