From the Diversity of History to a History of Diversity: the Example of Gregory of Tours

 <Tagline>Dr. Reimitz of Princeton University, 4/7 @ 4pm in PAHB 216</Tagline>

Ancient Studies has invited Dr. Reimitz, Shelby Cullom Davis '30 Professor of European History and Professor of History at Princeton University, to give a talk at 4pm on April 7th, 2026.

There are only 20 spots available in PAHB 216, please sign up here to join!

Dr. Reimitz's description of the talk:

At the end of the sixth century, Bishop Gregory of Tours wrote the first comprehensive post-Roman history in the Frankish kingdom, which would become the most successful and enduring successor kingdom of the Western Roman empire. Consolidation and stability, however, are not Gregory's leitmotifs. He himself presented his narrative right from the start as mixte confusaeque - a topsy-turvy history of holy and unholy events, of saints and sinners, kings and bishops, Christians and pagans, of virtutes sanctorum et strages gentium. Gregory's commitment to complexity has hardly been taken seriously by modern historiography. In fact, most modern historians have ignored this statement and developed approaches to reduce the complexity of his narrative either by regarding him as a historian of the Dark Ages (a naive historian overwhelmed by the task of writing a proper history), or by seeing him as a meta-textual demiurge - a cunning manipulator of a story that corresponded more to his rhetorical devices and spiritual agenda than to the social realities of his time. The critical work on Gregory's Histories, however, started much earlier: with the rewriting of the ten books as a Frankish history in the seventh and eighth centuries, as is visible in a (for the early medieval period) considerable number of extant manuscripts. In my talk I would like to concentrate on this line of reception of copyists and historians and how they built upon and adapted the complex social imaginary of the Merovingian bishop.

"Although the role of the humanities in the economic life of the United States may not be as readily apparent as that of engineering, for example, the humanities are, in fact, crucial to many fundamental elements and functions of modern economic productivity. Institutions such as museums and universities, as well as business enterprises in publishing and journalism, generate employment, returns on private investments, and tax revenues. They also depend on the humanistic skills of critical thinking, reading, writing, and speaking, and, while these skills have always been important, they have become increasingly vital to today's knowledge-based economy, which requires a strong humanities workforce."--Humanities Indicators

The Bernard L. Berkowitz Memorial Award

 <Tagline>Applications due April 1, 2026</Tagline>

To commemorate the life and work of Bernard (“Bernie”) L. Berkowitz (1927-2023), an endowed annual award program has been established to encourage future generations of public servants who are demonstrating characteristics exhibited by Bernie Berkowitz in his career in Baltimore. The program is administered by the Center for Social Science Scholarship.

Born in 1927 in New York City to immigrant parents from rural Hungary, Bernie grew up in working class neighborhoods in the Bronx. His family’s experience with unemployment in the 1930’s was the basis of a lifelong commitment to social justice and economic development. He attended New York City public schools; graduated cum laude from C.C.N.Y. with a major in economics, and received a Master’s in Urban Planning from Columbia University. He served in the United States Army with occupation forces in Japan and Korea.

In all of his endeavors, Bernie exemplified “no nonsense” intellectual rigor, progressive social thinking, and creative thinking about practical solutions. He aspired to improve the Baltimore community by increasing economic opportunities. He believed in transcending divisions – bringing together people of different social and economic backgrounds. He is fondly remembered for his striving to “do the right thing”, always with a sense of humor and kindness.

Award recipients will be selected annually by UMBC faculty in the Center for Social Science Scholarship based on students’ demonstrated interest in and commitment to planning and economic development of the Baltimore community. Candidates should reflect the interests, values and character of Bernie Berkowitz. Preference will be given to those interested in public service or not-for-profit careers.

Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply by April 1, 2026.

UMBC Interdisciplinary CoLab is now accepting undergraduate student applications for Summer 2026 (Summer Session One: June 1st - June 26th). The application deadline is Wednesday, March 25th.

Tracing Korean American Lives in the Region: Archival Foundations for Local Community History

Project Leader: Dr. Kyung-Eun Yoon, Modern Languages, Linguistics, and Intercultural Communication (MLLI)

This CoLab project invites students to participate in a community-engaged research initiative documenting the history of Korean Americans in the Baltimore region in collaboration with the Howard County Historical Society (HCHS). Founded in 1958, HCHS serves as the primary institution dedicated to collecting and preserving historical records and artifacts related to the history of Howard County. While the Korean population in the area is substantial and plays a significant role in its multicultural landscape, HCHS currently has no well-established archive or collection representing their presence, contributions, and stories.

Working closely with the faculty project leader and HCHS staff, students will collaboratively produce historically grounded narratives for a general audience and contribute to an initial searchable inventory within HCHS's collection database. The team will conduct hands-on archival and historical research using curated sources that trace Korean American life in the region through the early 2000s, some of which are written in Korean.

The project provides students with practical experience in archival research, public humanities, and community collaboration while contributing to the long-term preservation of local history.

Recommended skills, abilities, and interests for applicants:
Student members of the interdisciplinary team should share the following traits: intellectual curiosity, solid research skills, interest in archival research, strong written and oral communication skills, interest in regional history (including Korean immigration history), ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and a willingness to lead sections of the project.

Additionally, we are looking for one or more students with the following skills and interests: data-related skills, including experience with or interest in learning research databases and archival software (such as PastPerfect); competence in Korean to support translation and summary writing (and possibly to talk to community members who may be more comfortable using Korean).

More About CoLab:

CoLab is a paid 4-week, in-person summer research internship for undergraduates.

Participants receive a $3000 stipend following their successful completion of the internship and a scholarship covering the cost of the 3-credit internship course.

Open to all majors, CoLab is an excellent opportunity for students in social science and humanities fields to gain collaborative research and technical skills. Student interns work on interdisciplinary project teams to conduct research, create effective narratives about their findings, and develop public-facing final products to support the goals of on and off campus community-engaged organizations and scholars.
