  <Title>Call for Proposals for 2025-2026 Humanities Forum</Title>

    <![CDATA[
    <div class="html-content">
    <p><span>Since
     1987,
    the Humanities Forum has offered a free program of events that 
    illustrate the richness of contemporary work in philosophy, history, 
    culture, language,
    literature, and the arts. <span></span></span></p>
    
    <p><span>The Forum fosters creative thinking about the role of the
    humanities in civic life within our globally interconnected world.</span></p>
    
    <p><span><span> </span></span></p>
    
    <p><span>The Dresher Center for the Humanities welcomes
    your suggestions for the upcoming season. Proposals will be vetted by the
    Humanities Forum Planning Committee in conversation with the Dresher Center
    staff.<span> </span>Consideration will be given to
    balance across fields and topics as well as orientation towards a public
    audience.</span></p>

    <p><span>All suggestions are welcome so long as they
    center humanities issues, topics, methodologies, or questions.</span></p>

    <div>Please Join us for Black &amp; Gold Rush on March 4 – 5!</div>

    <div>This year's theme—See Yourself In—is an invitation to all of us to see ourselves in UMBC's story. For 36 hours, our community will come together to support what makes UMBC extraordinary: scholarships that change lives, research that breaks new ground, programs that meet students where they are, and the people who make it all possible. </div>

The following are more specific opportunities to support our students:</div>

    <div>
    <p><strong>The Bolton Family Scholarship: </strong><br>Awarded to students with an approved degree plan involving significant quantitative skills (preference given to students with course concentrations in mathematics or science)</p>
    <p><strong>The Cathy Hiebler '98 and Chip Hiebler Scholarship: </strong></p>
    <p>A need-based scholarship for students who are facing a financial hardship or challenge that may prevent them from completing their degree</p>
    <p><strong>The Zainab Damji Memorial Scholarship:</strong><br>Students who wishes to pursue a career in some form of education (this could include after school programs, adult learning, citizens science, etc.), and who has demonstrated leadership and service to an identified community. </p>
    <p><strong>The La Noue Award:</strong></p>
    <p>Provides students the opportunity to explore multiple disciplines through real-world experiences outside of the classroom. Recipients of this award may use the funds to attend academic conferences, engage in undergraduate research, and participate in study abroad programs.</p>

  <Title>Celebrating International Women's Day</Title>

    <p><strong>Please join the Russian Area, as we recognize International Women's Day</strong>, for a special event dedicated to the voices and outstanding historical achievements of women from throughout the Russian speaking world.</p>
    <p>All are welcome, as we embrace the spirit of the holiday — recognizing women as pioneers, leaders, and innovators who have shaped culture, scholarship, and society.</p>
    <p><strong>The 75-minute program will include:</strong></p>
    <ul>
    <li><p>A brief introduction</p></li>
    <li><p>A mini-lecture by a guest speaker Dr. Alex Novitskaya, UMBC Dept. of Gender, Women's and Sexuality Studies"</p></li>
    <li><p>Student slide presentations sharing original research and personal reflections</p></li>
    <li><p>A fun, interactive quiz, led by Dr. Vera Kastrel, on gender and culture in the Russian language</p></li>
    <li><p>Informal conversation and refreshments</p></li>
    </ul>

    <div>The <a href="https://circa.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Innovation, Research, and Creativity in the Arts</a> (CIRCA) presents Filipinx-American composer, percussionist, and sound artist <a href="https://www.susieibarra.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Susie Ibarra</a>, who will present her groundbreaking work at UMBC in a concert, spatial audio installation, and workshop. Ibarra’s interdisciplinary practice focuses on strengthening connections to the natural environment and advocating for stewardship through sound. Ibarra’s work calls upon Asian percussive traditions, jazz sensibilities, as well as on her extensive study in a wide range of interests, including improvisation, sonic mapping, and artistic intervention for societal transformation. The concert will include performances by UMBC music students and faculty.</div>

    <div><strong>A spatial audio installation will open at 6:30, followed by a concert at 7:30.</strong></div>

    <Title>Nominate a student for the Mary Akaras Book Award!</Title>

          <div>The Dresher Center for the Humanities seeks nominations for students eligible to receive the <strong>Mary Akaras Scholarship Book Award</strong> for $500 toward the purchase of texts. The student should have a minimum GPA of 3.00, should be pursuing a major in a Humanities field, should not already be receiving significant scholarship funds, and should not be in his/her final semester at UMBC. </div>

          <div>Faculty members are asked to nominate students with a short letter of recommendation sent electronically to Kate Drabinski at <a href="mailto:aoskoz@umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">drabinsk@umbc.edu</a>. A student may self-nominate but a faculty letter is needed in support of his or her application.
