Intern of the Week: Amanpreet Aujla for Biological Sciences

  <Tagline>Learn about Amanpreet's experience as a JH Research Intern!</Tagline>

Name: Amanpreet Aujla

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: John Hopkins Center for Learning and Health

Position Title: Research Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Biological Sciences

Expected Graduation Year: 2017

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

I worked at the Johns Hopkins Center for Learning and Health. It is a treatment research unit dedicated to providing and evaluating behavioral interventions that address problems of drug addiction, poverty, and unemployment. My fellow team members and I looked for participants in drug detox facilities who have had drug addiction problems. We provided these participants with medication to help block the effects of drugs but more specifically heroin. Additionally, I gave them jobs skills training including mathematical and reading skills and in addition provided them with income. However, if it is seen that they are using drugs while on the medication, the income is taken away. Therefore, these incentives are used to help participants stay abstinent. I recorded assessments of the participants to see progress. Furthermore, I looked at urine results and saw how many times drugs are used and additionally, blood tests are taken. I also made a video to showcase our research study in order to gain more participants to join our study.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I found this internship through UMBC. I got my resume reviewed through an adviser and started applying on the jobs page. I got called into an interview in a couple weeks after sending in my resume.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I enjoyed making a difference in people's lives. Working with people who come from difficult backgrounds and have drug addictions, my ultimate goal was to help them get jobs and stay drug free. Getting to know each of my participants and working with a great team of researchers, I learned a lot about research and how everyone is so diverse. Seeing the participants grow as people, and noting how they worked so hard to get jobs made me happy and helped me realize that anyone has the potential to go forward.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe I made an impact by creating a video that will now be used every time the researchers go out and look for participants rather than the staff presenting with a piece of paper. I also learned a lot about the participants and helped them obtain jobs. Furthermore, I helped with projects and assisted researchers with various tasks that helped me get a better understanding of how complicated research can be.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would say that UMBC is a great portal to obtain a job. Getting my resume reviewed helped me the most when it came to getting this internship. If it wasn't for the Umbcworks page, I would have never had this amazing opportunity. I also recommend that other students get in contact with faculty and try to get research with them. Every step counts and it is important to get started early so you are always ahead of the game.

Intern of the Week: Michael Wolfe for Physics/Math

    <Tagline>Learn about Michael's experience as a NASA Engineer!</Tagline>

Name: Michael Wolfe

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

Position Title: Attitude Control Systems Engineer

Major(s)/Minor(s): Physics, Math

Expected Graduation Year: 2017

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

I worked on the mission called NICER (Nuetron Star Interior Composition ExploreR). NICER is an x-ray timing and spectroscopy instrument that will launch to the International Space Station in 2016. NICER will resolve the nature of ultra-dense matter as well as demonstrate pulsar navigation by studying the dynamics of neutron stars. I'm on a team of attitude control engineers that develop and characterize the pointing system. Pointing the instrument within arcsecond accuracy is a challenge due to the vibrations of the ISS, stepper motor reaction torque, and thermal fluctuations in space. We run tests on the instrument that simulate a space like environment so we can tune its mechanical properties and software so it can perform properly despite the noisy environment.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I applied at NASA because of it’s groundbreaking developments in science and engineering. My faculty adviser told me that UMBC has a good reputation with the local Greenbelt campus. I also talked with people I knew in the field and they suggested this as one of the internships I should apply for.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I enjoyed the opportunity to grow outside of my academic comfort zone. As a physics/math major, much of my time is spent on theory and calculating with ideal conditions. When working in an engineering field such as attitude control systems, you really have to learn how to work around the electro-mechanical limitations and imperfections of your spacecraft in order to optimize its performance.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Calibrating and optimizing the optics and pointing system of the NICER instrument will allow it to properly collect x-rays emitted from neutron stars. This scientific data will help us understand and resolve ultra dense gravitation and lead to future pulsar navigation.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Challenge yourself. Be determined. Get outside your comfort zone.

Intern of the Week: Savannah Steinly for Chem. Engineering

    <Tagline>Learn about Savannah's experience as a Conservation Scholar!</Tagline>

Savannah is the Career Center's #UMBCintern Twitter contest winner!

Name: Savannah Steinly

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program

Position Title: Conservation Scholar

Major(s)/Minor(s): Chemical Engineering on the Environmental Track

Expected Graduation Year: 2018

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

I participated in a multi-year program that emphasizes learning about conservation, social and environmental justice, and how to diversify the current conservation movement. The first year is structured as a course that entails exploring Washington state and coming face to face with conservation issues across a variety of landscapes and communities. We connected themes including food, water, biodiversity, and climate to culture and the PPIA model (power, privilege, identity and agency). In the process, I hiked up mountains, trekked through deserts and forests, and toured cities while reflecting, discussing, and learning how to become an environmental change-agent.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I am drawn to adventure, travel, and learning new things, so I began searching for summer internship opportunities over winter break that would allow me to do so. As a freshman, I initially struggled to find opportunities that I was interested in and also had the qualifications for. Amidst this search, I received an email from the Undergraduate Research group on myUMBC outlining the Doris Duke Conservation Scholars program. The description immediately piqued my interest, and I began my application right away. While the process was somewhat lengthy (it required responses to six essay questions, a few letters of recommendation, a resume, and various other components) the effort was well worth it!

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

Of course, I’ve loved the variability of the program and the beautiful, eye opening sites that I’ve been privileged to travel to. The program would switch gears every week or so, and we would always experience something totally new. I encountered many different “firsts;” my first time traveling to the west coast, running through a desert (and spotting a coyote and a rattlesnake on the same day!), standing on a glacier, camping, spending the night in a Native American reservation and taking part in tribal traditions, and so much more. However, I’ve also greatly valued getting to know an amazing group of scholars from different backgrounds around and outside of the country. I found that I learned nearly as much from listening to them as I did from the program itself.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I want to believe that I’ve made an impact during the span of the program. I think that in terms of performing small-scale environmental remediation work and day-to-day interactions with others, I have. However, I’ve found that the main objective of the first year is to discover how to make the largest positive impact as a conservation professional, and how to make these efforts as effective and inclusive as possible. I am still searching for where I fit into the growing environmental conservation movement and how I can apply my current goal of becoming an environmental engineer or doing related work. Next year, I will make a more direct impact by undergoing the second part of this program, which involves interning for a department or organization around Seattle and undergoing a conservation research project.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Although it may sound cliche, don’t be discouraged by the lengthiness of the application processes, and don’t count yourself out. While applying for this internships, I recognized that the odds of acceptance were not particularly high. However, someone has to get accepted, so I thought, why not me? I also think it is important to show those reviewing the application that you are very interested in and passionate about the purpose of the position you are applying for. I think that my passion for environmental conservation and the way I portrayed that through writing was a notable factor in my acceptance.

Intern of the Week: Hailey Lynch for Mathematics/Economics

<Tagline>Learn about Hailey's experience at The Hershey Company!</Tagline>

Name: Hailey Lynch

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: The Hershey Company

Position Title: Advanced Capabilities Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Mathematics/Statistics;Economics

Expected Graduation Year: May 2016

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

I was an Advanced Capabilities Intern in the Global Knowledge and Insights Department at The Hershey Company this past summer. Hershey is currently working with a Silicon Valley technology company to build new capabilities that will allow Hershey to analyze big data and advance analytics. I was one of three interns placed on the project. I was responsible for conducting a wide variety of analyses in order to gain insights into the consumer landscape and to answer high-value business questions. In order to do this, I worked with the technology company’s new capability and utilized a range of large public and private data sets. I also conducted statistical analyses using the programming language R. Additionally, I was responsible for meeting with key individuals on a biweekly basis to help shape and enhance the new capability.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I received an email from the Career Services Center notifying me that Hershey was looking for analytically minded undergraduates to fill its new internship position. I applied on Hershey's website and was notified by the Career Services Center that I had been selected for an in-person interview. Both a Vice President and a Senior Manager from the company came to UMBC to conduct interviews. Hershey called me back shortly after my in-person interview and offered me the position.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

Throughout my time at Hershey, I was exposed to so many brilliant people, and I was able to learn so much about technology, big data, and the consumer packaged goods landscape. As a math major, I never imagined I would be given such a unique opportunity. I love that my position allowed me to utilize my analytical mind and quantitative background to help the company develop a new capability that will be used by future researchers.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Throughout the course of my internship, I made a multitude of recommendations for capability enhancements. In this way, I helped the system to run more efficiently, and I was able to leave my own personal mark on the capabilities being developed. Many of the recommendations I made either have been or are in the process of being implemented.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Be willing to try anything. I went into my internship unsure as to how a math major could be of any value to a chocolate company. My experience turned out to be invaluable, and it never would have happened if I hadn't taken a leap of faith at the start.

Intern of the Week: Danielle Haskin for EHS/Sociology

  <Tagline>Read about Danielle's experience as a McNair Scholar!</Tagline>

Being the primary investigator, I am in charge of the entire study with the support of my mentor, Dr. Rick Bissell. I was required to secure an avenue to disperse my surveys, maintain contact with people to find events to meet patients, write an extensive research report, and present my findings at multiple research conferences among other tasks that were required to ensure a well executed study.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I was walking through the halls and noticed a signup sheet for the McNair Scholars program. I had decided to attend UMBC because of its highlight on undergraduate research but was not sure on how to begin the process, so when I read up on the program, I thought McNair may be a good starting point. I was later contacted to complete the application process by the graduate research assistant and statistician for the McNair program. The program requires for you to develop a research proposal and submit it for a competitive position in the summer research institute.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

Being a first generation college student there were academic questions I had and no ideas where to get answers. The McNair Scholars program has allowed me to develop a research proposal, conduct the research, and write a publishable paper all with the support of those who have previously gone through the same process. I was awarded a Fellowship through the Summer Research Institute, SRI, that mimicked a graduate fellowship process. This SRI provided room and board along with a stipend to conduct my research over the summer. I also received graduate school preparation and incentives such as a GRE prep course, GRE exam waivers, and application fee waivers when I apply to graduate schools. Having preparation for the next step in my education has been wonderful!

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I am conducting research in order to gauge the receptiveness of an adult diabetic population to a community paramedicine, or similar community based healthcare service. The information I gather should support the research that has been ongoing by various community based health care personnel. I am filling gaps that are currently in the literature since this is still an emerging topic. This program aims to help populations that are underserved by traditional health care programs. I have worked in conjunction with the American Diabetes Association throughout this project and hope to continue to help the community through education and support.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Get involved early! If you have the slightest idea you may want to work on a project talk with your adviser or a professor that may be able to help you find a project. You don’t have to begin by developing your own research either. There are constantly projects that professors or graduate students are working on that may need your help. If you determine that you like it, joining a program such as McNair Scholars really is the best route because they allow you to fully develop, plan and conduct your research. Also looking into the Undergraduate Research Award or presenting at URCAD is something you should keep in your mind. The experience really is priceless!

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

This research project has required that I get out of my comfort zone and move onto the next step in both my education and career. I am involved in projects that I didn't previously think I had the experience for all because of the connections I have made through my research.

Like this story on Facebook or FAV/RT on Twitter!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?
Intern of the Week: Katie Swanson for Computer Science

  <Tagline>Learn about Katie's experience at Google!</Tagline>

Name: Katie Swanson

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Google

Position Title: Engineering Practicum Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Computer Science

Expected Graduation Year: May 2017

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service-learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

I am a software engineering intern at a huge company whose goal is to make all of the world's information more accessible. I was on the Play Analytics team, creating a visualization of the Play Store data for the business analysts and other higher ups to better see where the Play Store stands in different statistics. Day-to-day tasks included programming in java and javascript, lots of meetings to discuss plans for my project, and there were fun things scheduled in, too! I am expected to be responsible for my project, finish my milestones by their deadlines, attend meetings I am expected to attend, and to enjoy my summer by maintaining a healthy work-life balance. I finished about one change-list per week. Change-lists are chunks of code that improve my project. My hosts and other full-timers have to review it and comment on it to make sure what I added is perfect before it can be submitted to the official Google code-base.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I was looking for summer internships Freshmen year, and I heard Google had an amazing internship program. I heard both from word of mouth from trustworthy sources, as well as from the movie The Internship. It seemed like a perfect fit, so I Googled "Google Summer Internship 2014" and it took me right to the application page. I applied directly on the Careers@Google site and it was a pretty easy application. I had to submit basic information, my resume, and an optional cover letter. Later on, I received an email from the University Recruiting Team asking me to respond to five essay questions and send in my transcript. I applied in September, I received that follow-up email about a week later, then in November, I received an email asking if they could interview me for a summer intern position. I replied with my availability, and I scheduled an interview right after finals ended in December. I had two technical interviews over the phone using Google Docs. They included algorithms and data structures which I completed it in Python, including a section I had to code myself. I got a call at the end of January from my recruiter saying I got the job! It was a very exciting, rewarding process, and I am proud of myself for not using any connections and working hard to obtain this position on my own.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I love the emphasis the company puts on work-life balance and treating their employees right. You are not going to get a good product if your workers are upset or treated poorly. There are plenty of opportunities to have fun, and taking breaks from work (not for too long) is proven to increase efficiency. There isn't much pressure to succeed and do well here in the sense that our competitors are more like friendly competitors, like "Wow you did that better than us, that's impressive, can we see how?" It's just a big fun relaxed family that wants to make the user experience better and change the world a little.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe I have made a significant impact on the Google Play Store on all Android devices. I have created an internal tool to visualize the data and usage of the Play Store so business analysts and other important people can use it to make important business decisions about the Play Store. For instance, they could see that including the wallet logo next to the purchase button was actually lowering sales, so they would decide to remove the wallet logo, and the sales numbers would go up. What I did impacts Google's business and monetary intake as well as improving the user experience of the Play Store.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Apply for everything. Put yourself out there by contacting recruiters and being very enthusiastic about wanting to work for their company. I applied to maybe over 60 summer internships, and one had to have accepted me. The odds are high at that point. Create a LinkedIn and add all of your classmates and people who have similar career goals so you can support each other. Message recruiters from companies first on the company recruitment email (aka careers@google.com), then through anyone you may know who works there, then find a good recruiter on LinkedIn and send them a personal message expressing your interest. It is absolutely essential that you make connections and use them. You can help others out as well so it is a huge web of interns helping other interns get internships. If you network enough, you will have connections at companies you want to work for, then getting a contact through them (either a project manager or a recruiter) will be very beneficial. It is having an insider connection/referral and companies take those into more consideration than someone who applies out of the blue with no context. If you make a friend at a Women in Computing Conference who works for Facebook, you could ask her to connect you to her recruiter so you could possibly get an internship there as well. It is very beneficial to network and create as many connections as possible, it will open so many doors and opportunities you otherwise wouldn't have known were there.

Intern of the Week: Nora Corasaniti for Political Science

<Tagline>Learn about Nora's experience at the MD House of Delegates!</Tagline>

Name: Nora Corasaniti

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Maryland House of Delegates | Title of Your Position: Legislative Assistant

Major(s)/Minor(s): Political Science

Expected Graduation Year: December 2017

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service-learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

In my internship, I write a lot of emails and answer the phone a whole lot too. But I also get to work with constituents on their various issues, which is really great and satisfying! I get a lot of free food and networking opportunities too, which are awesome.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I found my internship myself-- I had met my former delegate last year working as a House page and she offered me an internship. Then, when she became a judge, I sent my resume and a cover letter to my current delegate and chief of staff, who coordinated with each other and decided to hire me.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I have loved everything about it! My favorite part is getting to work closely next to such kind and influential people, and seeing how they get things accomplished like passing legislation or working with someone of the opposite party on an issue.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another opportunity ?

I have learned a lot about presenting myself well and public image-- it is entirely too important to be careful about how you present yourself both in person and on social media!

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would say that they should always go for it--put yourself out there! The worst that can happen is that someone could tell you no, and that is not half as bad as knowing you could have gotten an amazing internship with fantastic people.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / the internship placement process.

I liked working with the Career Center and learning more about the process. Kacie Lawrence is awesome and really helpful!

Like this story on Facebook or FAV/RT on Twitter!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?
Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service-learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

I interned at "The Kane Show", a popular morning radio program on HOT 995 in DC, and 104.3 in Baltimore. I worked directly with the show's producer, Erick, as well as the cast, including Kane, Danni, and Intern John. I edited broadcasts to be syndicated around the country, online podcasts and segments for iHeart Radio, and helped produce segments alongside Erick and my fellow interns. Also I grabbed a few coffees and breakfasts, which is fine because I got some too.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I got in touch with Erick through the station's website, and had known him prior to starting my internship in the fall.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

Having fun. Being with a group of creative, fun-loving, and out-going people was probably a much more loose working environment than most internships college students can have. The radio industry is full of characters, and they encourage you to be friendly, confident, and make connections. I left The Kane Show with friends, memories, as well as professional connections. And a job! I now work in the promotions department.

Like this story on Facebook or FAV/RT on Twitter!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?
Intern of the Week: Jennifer Montooth for History/POLI SCI

  <Tagline>Learn about Jennifer's experience at the MPRC!</Tagline>

Name: Jennifer Montooth

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Maryland Psychiatric Research Institute Peer Review Program | Title of Your Position: Research Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): History, Political Science

Expected Graduation Year: December 2015

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, research, or service-learning opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

The Peer Review Program helps low-income families in inner city Baltimore receive medication for their children with Schizophrenia. The researchers help make sure the children are efficiently getting the proper amount of medication. When I assist the researchers, I help them organize and file all of the patients' information in alphabetical order and send out their charts to the proper offices and hospitals to ensure that every patient gets the proper care.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I found my internship through UMBCWorks and was enthralled in the idea. Once I submitted my resume, I had a phone interview with the supervisor. She was curious as to why a history and political science major would want to help a psychiatric program. I explained to her, however, that I was very interested in pursuing a Public Policy degree once I graduate, and am very interested in learning about successful programs such as the Peer Review Program. I also told her about my research paper from a previous semester regarding the lack of mental health funding and assistance in Baltimore City prisons, and how it would help the city in several ways if inmates got proper treatments for their disorders. My excitement about the program and learning about mental health helped me get the internship almost on the spot.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBCworks

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I love the people in the program, they're all very passionate about what they do, and it feels motivating to be around them. I learn more each day about all of the processes and steps it takes to keep the program running and proving their efficiency in order to continue receiving funding.

Once a week I also get to meet with a doctor and a group of Schizophrenia patients at one of their education sessions, where the patients learn more about their disorder. I had never encountered anyone with Schizophrenia before, so it's been amazing to interact with the patients and learn more from the doctors.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would advise them to think outside of the box, and think towards the future. This internship is a little far off from my major, but it keeps me constantly learning, which makes every day a new experience. I did a research paper that got me motivated to help mental health programs a year ago, and wanted to get more involved, but had no idea how. I feel like I have more understanding of what I want to do once I graduate thanks to this internship.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / the internship placement process.

Everyone involved in helping me receive credit for this internship, including Jeremiah Sawyer and my professor Michele Wolff, have been nothing but encouraging and helpful the whole time, which makes this experience all the better.

I work on a lot of things at Mindgrub. The main focus of my position is doing research on potential clients that the company may contact as well as researching attendees for conferences that the President may attend. Sometimes I draft speech proposals for those conferences as well. I also keep up with all of their social media accounts, including LinkedIn to post relevant information on events, products and industry news.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I found this internship through UMBCWorks. I applied with a resume, writing sample and Cover Letter then I had a phone interview. During that interview we talked about my prior experiences and what I hope to gain from the internship. Then I came in for an in-person interview and brought materials such as PDF versions of email newsletters I designed, video samples and graphic layouts.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

Career Center, UMBCworks

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

Mindgrub is FULL of UMBC alum. I have been really lucky to talk to them about their experiences at UMBC and see how I can take my UMBC education further. The company culture is also super amazing. Mindgrub is really into Ping-Pong and the company is small enough that everyone knows each other and gets along fairly well.

What have you gained from your experience that you could not have gained from another opportunity?

I learned how companies assess their potential client-base and what a typical workflow is like. In my last two internships I was the only intern, or the first intern, so working with other interns and within a process that already exists.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

GO TO THE CAREER CENTER. I have met with someone from the career center a few times and every time I go in a little panicked and confused, I come out with great ideas and I feel much better. The Career Center works so hard to make sure that every student has as many opportunities as possible, and it's part of their job to help you navigate the career search, USE THEM!

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / the internship placement process.

Apply for it all. I applied for about 15 internships before receiving this one, and the summer before I applied to about the same and got two different internships. Once you get the hang of the application process, it's easy.

Like this story on Facebook or FAV/RT on Twitter!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?
