<Title>Intern of the Week: Carol Canales for Financial Economics!</Title>
<Tagline>Check out her internship with Pacific Western Bank.</Tagline>

    <p><strong><span>Position Title: </span></strong><span>Portfolio Management Intern</span></p>

    <p><strong><span>Major(s)/Minor(s): </span></strong><span>Financial Economics</span></p>

    <p><strong><span>Current Class Level: </span></strong><span>Junior</span></p>

    <p><strong><span>Work Term: </span></strong><span>Summer 2019</span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>Tell us about your internship, co-op, or
research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.</span></em></strong></p>

<p><span>As an intern for the Portfolio Management
Department, I assisted account executives who are loan servicers for health
care, real estate, premium or lender finance, and commercial aviation. These
executives regularly deal with well known companies such as American Airlines.
I am learning how they prepare the invoices, monitor postings, and manage
payments. I have also prepared more than 1,000 invoices for the small business
lending group, as well as uploaded insurance and interest rate changes in the
bank's Portfolio Management System. My main project for the summer was about
the company's 10 lending groups and the Venture Banking division. I spent about
7 weeks interviewing 12 people in-person and over the phone and summarized the
data into a presentation. I delivered and facilitated a 35 minute presentation
in front of 40 people. Although it seemed nerve-racking, the staff were very
nice and gave positive feedback. Human Resources also had several workshops and
a recent college graduate round table, where new employees gave their insight
on the job search process. </span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>Describe the process of obtaining your position.
When did you hear of the position and submit your application?</span></em></strong></p>

<p><span>My friend and UMBC alumna told
me back in December 2018 that her company has an internship program and asked
her supervisor about it the end of January 2019. After receiving an email from
the supervisor, I sent in my resume and was given a phone interview the next
day. I got an email from an HR specialist on April 10th with the official
company flyer and the reference code to officially apply. I applied right away
and received an offer letter a week later. I used my friend's resume as a
comparison and also visited the Career Center. </span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>What have you enjoyed the most about your
    position or organization? </span></em></strong></p>

    <p><span>I enjoyed meeting people from
different departments and divisions. It is incredible to see the bond between
the account executives and how close the other lending groups are amongst their
team. The facilities staff also went above and beyond to brighten everyone's
day. From providing snacks, setting up volunteer days to opening up their homes
to watch political debates and the Women's World Cup. The Chevy Chase office
    has a genuine loving atmosphere.</span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>How do you believe you have made an impact
    through your work?</span></em></strong></p>

<p><span>I am the only intern who goes up to the
supervisor regarding any issues I have with my computer or to ask how to assign
myself work in my spare time. I have heard other Account Executives admire my
desire to learn and take in information by having my notepad and pen with
    me. </span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>What advice would you give to another student
who is seeking an internship or similar experience?</span></em></strong><strong><span> </span></strong></p>

<p><span>Be proactive, search for these opportunities on
your own, and try to network with alumni in addition to using the Career Center
    website!</span></p>

<p>The Shattuck Family Internship Program for Entrepreneurship
Innovation and Social Change prepares UMBC students for the rigors and
rewards of entrepreneurship and social innovation. This program places
highly-motivated students from diverse backgrounds in mentored
internships to better prepare them to launch nonprofit or social
ventures. Students get training and experience to empower them to become
the next generation of social entrepreneurs–working largely in the
not-for-profit world, developing and delivering innovative solutions to
some of our region’s most urgent social problems.<br>
      <br>
Internships last one semester (15 weeks) and students will work, on
average, 8 to 10 hours per week. Students receive a stipend of $1,500
toward their compensation. In addition to the internship, students
engage in projects and activities that further expose them to the social
     entrepreneurial mindset.<br>
      <br><strong>
    Why Participate? </strong><br>
    - Earn a competitive stipend of $1,500 <br>
    - Gain valuable experience in your career field by interning 120 hours over the course of the semester (8-10 hours per week) <br>
    - Be exposed to the knowledge, skills, and mindset required to successfully launch and manage a nonprofit/social venture<br>
    - Develop a network of contacts in the nonprofit community for future references and opportunities <br>
    - Apply classroom knowledge in a realistic work environment and apply lessons learned in the workplace to academic coursework<br>
    </p>
    <p><strong>TO APPLY:</strong><br>
Interested students are asked to submit a Resume and a Cover Letter answering the following questions:<br>
Discuss your interest in social entrepreneurship/nonprofit leadership
and this intern program.  What has been your entrepreneurial involvement
thus far such as coursework, seminars, etc. (if applicable)?  What type
of nonprofit would you like to intern for and why? <br>
    </p>
    <p>Credentials can be submitted via <a href="https://careers.umbc.edu/umbcworks/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">UMBCworks</a> (position 9312364).  If

    <p><strong><span>Work Term: </span></strong><span>Summer 2019</span><span></span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>Tell us about your internship, co-op, or
research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.</span></em></strong><span></span></p>

<p><span>At the National Aquarium, I was responsible for
the day-to-day tasks of maintaining 4 exhibit tanks and several backup tanks.
These tasks included taking parameters of all tanks every morning, cleaning
tanks, performing water changes, performing backwashes on filters, and
preparing diets for my animals. I would also assist with small procedures on
animals, such as debridement of a wound on one of the turtles. This is a
procedure where essentially I would capture and hold her while the vets cleaned
    the wound.</span><span></span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>Describe the process of obtaining your position.
When did you hear of the position and submit your application?</span></em></strong><span></span></p>

<p><span>I heard from the Career Center
that the National Aquarium was looking for UMBC students to hire. So, I had my
resume reviewed and learned how to write a cover letter for my application.
After doing that, I submitted my application and did a phone interview before
    being offered a position.</span><span></span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>What have you enjoyed the most about your
    position or organization? </span></em></strong><span></span></p>

    <p><span>I loved learning about the
animals I was working with and how the systems they lived in functioned. Even
the most mundane task was enjoyable for me. I'm actually still there as a
volunteer currently and I'm looking at becoming an aquarist post-graduation.
I'm about to take a class in the biology department on the physiology of marine
animals to gain more insight into marine and estuarine animals to help with my
    career search.</span><span></span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>How do you believe you have made an impact
    through your work?</span></em></strong><span></span></p>

<p><span>I helped to maintain the exhibits that hundreds
of visitors come to and appreciate every day. By doing this, I know that I was
part of the public learning and appreciating our natural world as well as what
    animals need our help.</span><span></span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>What advice would you give to another student
who is seeking an internship or similar experience?</span></em></strong><strong><span> </span></strong><span></span></p>

<p><span>Even if it's scary, go for it. I applied to the
National Aquarium last summer and I wasn't offered a position, but I still
applied this year. Because I took the chance, I was offered the position of a
lifetime and a new career focus.</span><span></span></p>

<Title>Intern of the Week: Bianca Monge for Information Systems!</Title>
<Tagline>Check out her internship with Leidos.</Tagline>
  <Body>

<div class="html-content"><p><span><strong>Name: </strong></span><span>Bianca Monge</span></p><p><span><strong>Internship, Co-op or Research Site: </strong></span><span>Leidos</span></p><p><span><strong>Position Title: </strong></span><span>Cybersecurity Analyst Intern</span></p><p><span><strong>Major(s)/Minor(s): </strong></span><span>Information Systems</span></p><p><span><strong>Current Class Level: </strong></span><span>Senior</span></p><p><span><strong>Work Term: </strong></span><span>Summer 2019</span></p><p><span><strong><em>Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.</em></strong></span></p><p><span>During my internship, I worked within the Cyber &amp; SIGINT department of the Intel group as a Cybersecurity Analyst Intern. My project over the summer was to research a product pitched to our company that would be able to prevent software memory corruption attacks. My team and I researched, analyzed, and tested the product to document its effectiveness and faults. Not only did we test its functionality as a cyber hardening product, but we also looked at if and how it could be misused in the wrong hands. The areas of cybersecurity that my day-to-day responsibilities entailed were buffer overflow attacks, reverse engineering, binary analysis, vulnerability/exploit testing, and malware analysis.</span></p><p><span><strong><em>Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?</em></strong></span></p><p><span>I found the internship position listing on Glassdoor, which linked me to the Leidos website in October of last year. I was contacted shortly after applying to come in for an interview, and not long after that I was told that I got the internship.</span></p><p><span>Although I found and obtained my position outside of UMBC, I would highly recommend going to the Career Fair and attending recruiter workshops to get your name and face out there. I did, and it definitely gave me a chance to practice interviews and become more comfortable interacting with recruiters. </span></p><p><span><strong><em>What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization? </em></strong></span></p><p><span>The people and work that I get to do. The people I met were all so intelligent and had so much knowledge, experience, and advice to share. I felt like I always learned something new by saying hi to someone new everyday. Having that great environment around me, and finally getting the chance to do real work in the field I love, was a dream come true.</span></p><p><span><strong><em>How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?</em></strong></span></p><p><span>The documentation of all the research my team and I did on the product was actually going to be sent to higher ups in order to help them make their final decision on whether or not Leidos should use the product within their systems and/or relay the product to Leidos customers.</span></p><p><strong><em><span>What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?</span><span> </span></em></strong></p><p><span>Take advantage of the Career Fair and technical/recruiter workshops. Even if you do not get any responses back, it is networking experience to prepare for the day when you do land that interview.</span></p><p><span>During interviews, don't shy away from telling the interviewer what you aren't the most well-versed in. It's important for both you and them so that they place you in a position they think you'll enjoy and be good at. Also, if you're passionate about a certain subject, express it!</span></p><p><span>Like the Career Center on </span><a href="http://on.fb.me/1tHDhL0" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Facebook</span></a></p><p><span>Follow us on </span><a href="http://bit.ly/1BFHeAc" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Twitter</span></a><span> and </span><a href="https://www.instagram.com/umbccareers/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Instagram</span></a></p><p><span>#UMBCintern</span></p><br><p><span><strong>Want to be the next Intern of the Week? </strong></span><span>Make sure to fill out </span><a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdrhdHPKeYvoNKyTWcbHbxOcUeATP9WcHo0R1W_EU4EyuwXNg/viewform?usp=sf_link" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>this form</span></a><span> and stay tuned. <p><strong><span>Work Term: </span></strong><span>Summer 2019</span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>Tell us about your internship, co-op, or
research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.</span></em></strong></p>

<p><span>I am an editorial intern for the UMBC Alumni
Magazine. I write feature stories that are published on the magazine's website
and will be publishing an article that will be in the Spring 2019 print edition
of the magazine. I collaborate with my fellow intern and my editor to write
mainly science features about faculty on campus. I am sometimes tasked with
writing the "Class Notes" section that is also featured in the
magazine which highlights alumni accomplishments. Each day, I work on my latest
feature piece and interview, document, and write about all of the amazing
          happenings at UMBC.</span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>Describe the process of obtaining your position.
When did you hear of the position and submit your application?</span></em></strong></p>

          <p><span>Professor Christopher Corbett
told my now editor, Jenny O'Grady that I may be a good fit for the program. I
was interviewed in Spring 2018 and received an internship offer shortly
          after. </span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>What have you enjoyed the most about your
          position or organization? </span></em></strong></p>

<p><span>I love that I can meet
fascinating people on campus and tell their stories. This internship offers me
the opportunity to create narratives around a multitude of amazing happenings
at UMBC. I am able to meet new people, make great connections, and learn a
great deal about journalism along the way. </span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>How do you believe you have made an impact
          through your work?</span></em></strong></p>

<p><span>I hope that my articles inform readers about the
positive impact that UMBC has had on countless lives and how the University is
continuing to inspire people everyday. I also hope that my stories bring joy
and recognition to those whom I write about because they certainly deserve
          it. </span></p>

<p><em><strong><span>What advice would you give to another student
who is seeking an internship or similar experience? </span></strong></em></p>

<p><span>It is all about who you know. Go out and build a
large network of connections and do your best not to burn any bridges. Always
be the hardest working intern because that will pay off in the end. </span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>Tell us about your internship, co-op, or
research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.</span></em></strong><span></span></p>

<p><span>I was hired to assist the Hilltop Institute with
tasks that involved databases. My mornings involved analyzing our security logs
to look out for any suspicious activity in our network. I was also assigned to
automate this process so that in the future we can look at the visualizations
and not a csv file. I also worked with other programmers and assisted them with
any SQL related tasks. Additionally, I was assigned to analyze SAS programs and
create documents and Data Flow Diagrams that would help non-programmers and our
client to understand how the data has been segregated and stored in our
databases. My internship was extended and I am now working as a Graduate
Research Assistant for the same organization. </span><span></span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>Describe the process of obtaining your position.
When did you hear of the position and submit your application?</span></em></strong><span></span></p>

    <p><span>I applied for the position
online. In my first interview, I was asked about almost every detail from my
resume. Then, I had an interview with the Executive Director and the Chief of
Staff. After this, I had a test for a programming language, SQL. I prepared for
this by using HackerRank, a website that lets you practice for coding interviews,
and my lecture notes. I was extended an offer after I cleared these rounds.</span><span></span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>What have you enjoyed the most about your
    position or organization? </span></em></strong><span></span></p>

<p><span>For most of my internship, I
was the only one working on the project; this responsibility gave me the
opportunity to grow as a programmer and expand my skills, while also giving me
the freedom to use my creativity. Later on, I transitioned to a team and had to
collaborate with others. During these experiences, I learned a lot about how to
efficiently perform an assigned task and work with a group to create a cohesive
    project!</span><span></span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>How do you believe you have made an impact
    through your work?</span></em></strong><span></span></p>

<p><span>I had a lot of responsibility since most of the
time I was the sole contributor, with of course guidance from my supervisor who
was always pushing me to achieve more. Because of this, I was able to improve
with every deliverable and secure my new assistantship!</span><span></span></p>

          <p><strong><span>Work Term: </span></strong><span>Summer 2019</span><span></span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>Tell us about your internship, co-op, or
research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.</span></em></strong><span></span></p>

<p><span>This summer, I interned at The Brookings
Institution, a think-tank in Washington, D.C. that conducts research in the
social science field focusing on economics, foreign policy, governance,
metropolitan policy, and the global economy. I was part of the Global Economy
and Development program at Brookings. I worked as an intern under Senior Fellow
John McArthur to conduct research, collect and analyze data regarding how
powerful Canada is, in eight categories (Economic resources, Military
capability, Resilience, Future resources, Diplomatic influence, Economic
relationships, Defence networks, and Cultural influence) through the published
work of the Lowy Institute Asia Power Index. I was able to replicate the Lowy
Institute Asia’s methodology to calculate Canada's power score and finished a
10-page report, which detailed my research and the data mining process. At the
internship, I also collected data for the Southeast Asia Korea US Aid Project.
Lastly, I helped organize and plan the Brookings Blum Roundtable, an annual
forum for global leaders such as John Allen and Madeleine Albright to explore
various facets of global poverty with a focus on how technology and innovation
          promotes economic growth. </span><span></span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>Describe the process of obtaining your position.
When did you hear of the position and submit your application?</span></em></strong><span></span></p>

          <p><span>I heard about the position
through different outlets: the Sondheim Scholars Program, Dr. Mitch (the
department chair of the Economics Department at UMBC), and the Career Center. I
applied through myUMBC, submitting my resume, transcript, cover letter, and
writing sample around March. Afterwards, I completed a phone call interview
with Brookings, which went well. Weeks later, I received an email instructing
me to complete a background check and submit two letters of recommendation.
Then, I finally got the offer letter!</span><span></span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>What have you enjoyed the most about your
          position or organization? </span></em></strong><span></span></p>

          <p><span>This internship has a very
special place in my heart because it revealed the power of data and ignited my
passion for data science and statistics. I became exposed to the power of big
data and how I can combine my interest in economics and math. On a personal
note, the other thing I enjoyed the most about my internship was the
connections I made with my supervisor and my fellow interns. My supervisor was
a great mentor who helped me become a better writer, a better researcher, and a
better learner. He gave me a lot of insight into the directions that I could take
my career. The friends that I made at the internship will remain in my life
forever because we all learned a lot from each other and supported each other’s
goals. And finally, living in the heart of our nation’s capital was a
life-changing experience. D.C. is so diverse and I hope to work there one day!</span><span></span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>How do you believe you have made an impact
          through your work?</span></em></strong><span></span></p>

<p><span>At the beginning of my internship, I was feeling
somewhat discouraged because I could not see the big picture of my project.
However, through the amazing mentorship of my supervisor and the connections I
fostered with the other interns, I was able to see the impact of my work by
talking more about my research with others and seeing other indexes like the
Global Hunger Index or the Human Development Index, which portrayed similar
work. Through my research about Canada, my supervisor will be able to see the
strengths and weaknesses in Canada's power, which will help dissect Canada's
role in the US-China Trade war. </span><span></span></p>

<p><strong><em><span>What advice would you give to another student
who is seeking an internship or similar experience? </span></em></strong><span></span></p>

<p><span>I would tell everyone to network, no matter how
uncomfortable it may make you feel. </span><span></span></p>

<p><span>And to remember that the 9AM-5PM lifestyle might
take you a while to adjust to; therefore, prioritizing self-care is just as
important as focusing on your professional growth. </span><span></span></p>
