Day-to-day, I attended networking events and collaborated with my intern team on an automation project using Alteryx and PowerBI to streamline the manual filtering of cash equity's daily fails file. I also worked independently on a data visualization project for the cash equity team, helping to identify trends for mitigation and providing higher management with historical insights. Additionally, I scheduled coffee chats with executive directors, vice presidents, and managing directors to explore different career paths within the organization.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I first learned about the opportunity through signs around campus and attended a UMBC Connects event with Morgan Stanley in Fall 2023. At the event, I met members of Morgan Stanley's HR team, who reviewed my resume and provided feedback. Later, I attended a UMBC-hosted bus trip to Morgan Stanley, where I reconnected with the HR team. The application process included an online HireVue interview and a Superday interview. I submitted my application in September 2023 and received the offer in November 2023 for the Summer 2024 program.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
UMBC Career Center, Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.).

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
I enjoyed contributing meaningfully to the firm through an automation project that saved countless hours. Morgan Stanley fosters an inclusive and authentic culture while emphasizing community involvement, making it a rewarding and supportive environment.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
As a political science major in a finance institution, I brought a unique perspective to my intern group project, focusing on the bigger picture and amplifying team collaboration. My initiative to identify and address gaps in data visualization for the Cash Equity team created a lasting impact, improving processes and providing valuable insights for leadership.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Networking is essential—maintain your connections and attend UMBC events. Be authentic in your pursuits, as opportunities that align with your true self will lead to growth and success.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center:
"My summer at Morgan Stanley was a unique experience that allowed me to contribute to impactful projects and connect with professionals at all levels. I'm grateful for UMBC's resources and events like UMBC Connects, which helped me discover and secure this opportunity."

I also participated in an intern project where my group focused on creating solutions to make APL more accessible. Outside of these projects, I was able to participate in other things going on at the lab. I took a machine learning course, networked throughout the lab, attended various professional development seminars/programs, and I was even able to meet with the director of APL, Ralph Semmel, who actually completed his PhD at UMBC.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. They collected my resume, and I continued to apply online to any APL job postings that interested me. Around December, a group supervisor at APL contacted me about interning in his group and set up an interview. In addition, an intern project I worked on with other APL interns relating to making the lab more accessible gained interest from leadership at the company, wanting to develop the concept further.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Keep applying and getting your resume out there, you never know what opportunities lie around you. Going to networking events and utilizing your resources, both within UMBC and externally, is crucial in today's market. There are plenty of tools and people available at UMBC to help you in your career development, and in the meantime, continue your self-development learn skills that apply to the career you want to pursue.
Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center:
Interning at APL helped introduce me to a variety of projects while aiding in networking with others at all levels in the lab. My day-to-day responsibilities involved working closely with data, conducting research on language model optimization, and experimenting with model architectures to improve the accuracy and efficiency of event summarization tasks. I collaborated with cross-functional teams, participated in daily stand-ups, and delivered key updates on the model's progress. Additionally, I was responsible for coding and testing model prototypes, analyzing their performance, and refining them based on feedback and evaluation metrics. The experience gave me hands-on exposure to advanced machine learning techniques, as well as the opportunity to present my work to senior engineers and stakeholders at Microsoft.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I first learned about the opportunity to intern at Microsoft through their university recruiting program, which I had been following closely. I submitted my application in the fall of 2022, during the early recruitment cycle for their summer internships. After submitting my resume and project portfolio, I went through a series of technical interviews, including coding challenges and problem-solving tasks, which tested my knowledge in machine learning, data science, and software development. The interviews were challenging yet rewarding, as they allowed me to showcase my skills while also providing insight into Microsoft’s innovative projects. Following the interview rounds, I was thrilled to receive an offer for the internship, which I eagerly accepted for Summer 2023. This summer I returned to Microsoft for my second internship.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
Handshake

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
What I enjoyed most about my position was the opportunity to meet people from various schools like Princeton, UPenn, Howard etc. Learning about their diverse college experiences was really interesting and gave me new perspectives. I also loved talking to teenagers during the interviews. Since I was once a teenager myself, I found many of the topics we discussed relatable, which made the conversations more engaging. Additionally, I really appreciated the chance to shadow my PI, who is a pediatrician. It gave me valuable insight into the field of pediatrics, which is my passion.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I made an impact by creating a more engaging and comfortable environment for the teens during interviews, making it easier for them to open up and express themselves. As someone young who could relate to their experiences, I helped them feel understood and safe. In the specific lab I worked at, most researchers were young adults who weren’t very active on social media, so I was able to bridge the gap and bring a fresh perspective to our discussions about adolescent relationships and social media.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

My advice for another student seeking an internship is to start early, be proactive, and make your application show how excited you are about the opportunity. After applying on the organization’s website, send a follow-up email to show your passion for the position. Use resources like Handshake to find internships, and don’t worry if you don’t meet every requirement, focus on your strengths and what makes you a good fit. Also, talk to mentors or professors for advice and take advantage of networking to learn from others.

Most importantly, don’t give up. Keep applying, and if you face rejection, recognize what you can improve in your application. Remember, rejection is just redirection.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

“What I enjoyed most about my position at Microsoft was the opportunity to work on innovative machine learning projects that had a real-world impact, while being part of a collaborative and supportive team. The Career Center was instrumental in my success, offering guidance on refining my resume, preparing for interviews, and connecting me with internship opportunities that aligned with my career goals.”

My role centered on developing detection rules and logic, as well as automating processes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of security analysts in responding to cyber threats. I contributed to the creation and optimization of detection mechanisms, controls, and playbooks, which improved incident response workflows. Additionally, I integrated automated alert functions that helped streamline resolution processes. Collaborating with my team, I supported critical incident management and detection strategies, strengthening Walmart's overall security posture.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I began applying on LinkedIn during the summer of 2023, interviewed around August, and secured my offer by October 2023.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
LinkedIn or other social media

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
What I’ve enjoyed most about my time at Walmart Global Tech is the sheer scale and complexity of working at the world’s largest company. The InfoSec team operates with cutting-edge technology and advanced security mechanisms, providing a challenging and rewarding environment. Above all, it’s the people—my mentor, teammates, and leadership—that have made the experience truly exceptional. They are not only technically sharp but also incredibly supportive and inspiring, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented atmosphere.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I believe my work has made an impact by enhancing Walmart's threat detection and response capabilities. By developing detection rules, streamlining incident response processes, and implementing automation, I helped improve overall efficiency and security posture. Additionally, collaborating with my team on critical incidents and refining security controls has contributed to stronger defense mechanisms, ensuring better protection of sensitive data and continuity of operations. Through these efforts, I’ve been able to support the organization in mitigating risks and responding to evolving cyber threats more effectively.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
My advice to students seeking an internship or similar experience would be to start early and apply as soon as a job is posted. Networking is key—connect with professionals in your field and seek guidance. Focus on quality over quantity in your applications by tailoring each one to the specific role. Be persistent in your search and don't be discouraged by rejections—use them as opportunities to improve. Always read the job description carefully, highlight relevant skills and experiences, and prepare thoroughly for interviews to effectively showcase your value. Lastly, stay confident throughout the process!

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.
What I valued most about my position was seeing the direct impact of my work on reducing the mean time to resolve security events. The Career Center was instrumental in my internship journey, organizing networking events and job fairs, guiding me through the application process, and preparing me for interviews, which boosted my confidence and contributed to my success.

I acquired knowledge in Agile Project Management by assisting the Product Owner in leading a team of Software Developers, Quality Assurance Testers, and Analysts. Additionally, I had the opportunity to lead stakeholder meetings with international members (from London, Budapest, Mumbai, etc.) to guide the team in redesigning and documenting an improved workflow for the global scenario analysis program.

Some of the skills I gained include backlog management, UI/UX design, process management, data management, stakeholder management, and requirements gathering. I also conducted more than 20 interviews and created a SharePoint database for a program-long non-financial risk technology inventory project, which was shared firm-wide. We presented our findings to Executive Directors and senior management.

My day-to-day responsibilities involved joining meetings (both virtual and in-person) and networking with employees. I used a variety of tools, including Excel for writing user stories, PowerPoint for creating presentations and creating new workshop workflows, and JIRA for project management tasks. I also used ServiceNow to grant employee entitlements.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?:

I obtained my position by applying to the program online through Morgan Stanley's website. I applied on July 25, 2023. I sent my resume, and soon afterward, I was contacted through email for the next steps. The first step involved a phone call where I was asked questions. This call was intended to make sure I was prepared to move on to the next stage. Then, the next step was an in-person interview day, which was called "Superday." During this day, I had multiple interviews, each one with a different person, and a group project with other interviewees.

About two weeks after this process, I received a phone call from the recruiter in the morning, and they told me that I had been accepted for the position. I was officially extended an offer on November 15, 2023, and this was when I logged onto the online portal and accepted it there.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?:

Handshake

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?:

I enjoyed having the opportunity to get in-depth experience working at a large financial company. The process of networking and working with my manager and team was an exciting aspect.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?:

I believe I made an impact by contributing significantly to the team. I helped my manager redesign the entire new workflow for the scenario analysis program we were working on, and the team will continue to use my work. Additionally, the NFR Technology Inventory project I made with a group of other interns was shared with the Legal and Compliance Division in Baltimore, so employees will continue to use that.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?:

I would advise another student to focus on developing skills that show they are taking initiative. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?: I heard about this position through personal research in Early january. I applied through the website and about a month later began the 2 round interview process. Funny enough, after I was offered the position my friend sent me a post from UMBC advertising positions at Amgen. UMBC's Career and academic resources are really doing a great job keeping us on the pulse when it comes to amazing opportunities.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?:LinkedIn or other social media

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?:I love everything about my position.
