Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
Last summer, I worked as an AI & Data Science fellow at J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. The program was created for sophomore students interested in getting acclimated to the corporate world of financial services. I spent six weeks in J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.’s Columbus, Ohio office from late May to early August. During the first three weeks of the program, we were able to hear from a series of guest speakers, including CEO Jamie Dimon, who shared their insights on topics like imposter syndrome, having a growth mindset, and the importance of networking. I had the opportunity to receive advice from industry professionals who had once been in my shoes and to learn how to make the most of any opportunity I faced. Additionally, we acquired valuable technical skills to prepare us for our function-specific tasks, such as Excel, Python, and SQL.

I had the chance to strengthen my User Experience design skills during this time as well. We were given the task of creating a business proposal that would help boost efficiency for one of J.P. Morgan Chase’s minority depository institutions (MDIs). Alongside 3 other interns, I assisted in the creation of a 20-slide presentation that included UX wireframes and visual media, which we later presented to the MDI representatives. We received very positive feedback from the panel and interest in the possible implementation of our AI virtual assistant product.

During the next three weeks of the program, we were split into our business functions. Another AI & Data Science intern and I were placed under the direction of a product management team that created an internal data retrieval algorithm, enabling bankers and other JPMC personnel to pull client information more quickly and efficiently. I participated in meetings and assisted my manager with the necessary research for the product. Additionally, I experimented with data visualization models to demonstrate the progress of the product to stakeholders. My internship concluded with a final group project with 3 other interns, where we used Python and SQL to complete a case study showcasing what we had learned over the summer.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I learned about this opportunity while searching through Handshake for internship opportunities. I had been checking in every few days to find new listings and updates for companies that interested me. In late January of 2023, I received an invitation to an exclusive virtual event by J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. entitled, "Advancing Black Pathways / Advancing Hispanics & Latinos Fellowships Info Sessions." I was unfamiliar with this program at the time, so I found it beneficial to attend and learn more. I was able to hear from J.P. Morgan professionals and individuals who have completed the program. The Advancing Black Pathways (ABP) program aligned with my career interests and seemed like a great way to gain industry experience. After attending the session, I decided to apply. I reviewed the available positions and decided to try my luck with the AI & Data Science position, given my interest in the field after researching it in some of my IS classes. A few days after I submitted my application, I received a request to complete a video interview. It was a short, 15-minute HigherVue assessment that focused on getting to know you as a candidate and your interests in the position. Two months later, in March, I was invited to a Super-Day interview. The Super-Day setup consisted of two back-to-back 30-minute interviews with 3-4 J.P. Morgan employees specific to the function for which you applied. I ended up doing pretty well during the interview and received an offer three weeks later.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
What I enjoyed most about my internship was the opportunity to learn from those around me. I wanted to take advantage of the chance I had to speak with professionals in the industry who work in roles that interest me. I gained much more clarity about my career interests when hearing about the day-to-day responsibilities of the role. I asked many questions that revealed aspects of the job expectations that I wouldn't have been able to discern from a simple job description. J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. was a great company to gain industry experience with, and I truly encourage the push for professional growth. I appreciated being encouraged to explore different fields that interested me. At times, it felt like I was experiencing three internships in one. For instance, while at JPMC, I was paired with a mentor whom I met with weekly. During one of our meetings, I expressed my interest in User Experience design. My mentor then connected me with another JPMC professional who worked in that field. I learned about the projects she was involved in and the tools she used to create her designs. This experience prompted me to seek out courses and resources to further develop those skills and prepare for my future career. I still maintain contact with her to this day, and she has been instrumental in helping me progress towards becoming a great UX designer.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
While shadowing a team of product managers, I spent a lot of time hearing about possible solutions and approaches to solving the projects they were working on. My manager was involved in a project that required creating an algorithm to search the internet for specific information about thousands of potential clients. This algorithm aimed to collect information such as company name, stock value, location, organizational chart, etc., which would then be compiled into profiles stored in the company’s internal employee resource portal. The sources of this information were chosen based on their perceived reliability and value to JPMC. However, I found this approach inefficient because while a company might be valuable to JPMC in terms of business value, it might not provide the most reliable financial data. This could lead to inefficiencies due to the time taken to fill out the profiles. I suggested that only certain sources with a high rate of reliability should be used to retrieve data. I was then asked to share more about an alternative solution, which I pitched to the team for their consideration. The concept of incorporating multiple procedures for procuring information was implemented into the algorithm to enhance data retrieval effectiveness. Witnessing my idea evolve into a project requirement was incredibly rewarding. Additionally, I made valuable contributions during meetings by sharing my insights. As a new team member, I brought a fresh perspective to a team that had been developing a product for some time, identifying pain points that may not have been previously considered. Even if my ideas were not always implemented, I still facilitated meaningful conversations and provided insights to be considered in the future.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Make sure to reflect on your career interests first. What do you want to spend your summer doing? What companies are you interested in? One mistake that I made during my job search was applying to any and all internships that I saw were hiring, even to positions I didn’t care for just to get the internship experience. I thought that this method of applying everywhere and crossing my fingers was the most effective, but now I know that narrowing down your search will yield more quality results. The strongest applicants are those who have a true passion or interest in the field they are applying to. This way, when you get to that interview stage, you'll have a lot to speak about and your genuine enthusiasm will shine through. Once you find that field that makes you want to learn more about it, research the skills required to excel in the area. It will be a proactive way to get an early start on the application process and passively prepare for interviews. Before submitting your application, if possible, prepare yourself to be a competitive applicant. Take on leadership roles in on-campus clubs or organizations, look for part-time opportunities that relate to your career goals, and explore on-campus research that piques your interest. These are all resume boosters that can demonstrate your drive and initiative, qualities that recruiters are looking for. These tips will help you submit stronger applications that are more likely to land you the role you are seeking.

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
As a participant in this research project, I am contributing to an exciting and important area at the intersection of two cutting-edge fields: explainable artificial intelligence (AI) and digital forensics. This has the potential to shape how we approach and conduct forensic investigations in the digital age, where vast amounts of data and complex AI systems are increasingly involved.

The core focus of my research is to explore how we can make the decision-making processes and inner workings of AI systems more transparent and interpretable, especially in the context of digital forensics. This is crucial because AI algorithms, while powerful, can sometimes act as ""black boxes,"" providing results without explaining the reasoning behind them. In sensitive domains like law enforcement and legal proceedings, understanding the rationale and logic behind AI-generated conclusions is essential for maintaining trust, accountability, and admissibility of evidence.

Through my research, we investigate various explainable AI techniques and their applicability to different stages of the digital forensics process, such as data acquisition, analysis, and reporting. This involves analyzing methods like LIME, SHAP, and Grad-CAM, and understanding how they can provide human-interpretable explanations for AI-based forensic analysis.

My day-to-day tasks include:
Conducting an extensive literature review on explainable AI techniques, digital forensics processes, and the intersection of these two areas. Identify key challenges, open research questions, and potential opportunities.
Developing an outline and initial structure for the position paper.
Exploring and analyzing different explainable AI methods and their applicability to digital forensics use cases. Investigation of how explainable AI could enhance various stages of the digital forensics process, such as data acquisition, analysis, and reporting.
Researching real-world case studies or examples where explainable AI has been used (or could be used) to improve forensic analysis, provide transparency, and enhance human-AI collaboration.
Identifying potential ethical, legal, and social implications of using explainable AI in digital forensics.
Developing well-reasoned arguments and defensible positions on the role of explainable AI in this domain.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I heard about this position through my IS advisor, and I was notified that I could attend the 2023 IS Student Research Outreach on 11/28. Students and faculty at the Department of Information Systems conduct exciting and frontier research in many areas. This event provided a platform to explain how to conduct research and highlight research opportunities to students. The event mainly targeted undergraduates at the IS department. Undergraduates at other departments and graduate students who want to start research with IS faculty were also welcome to attend.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
One of the highlights of my internship experience has been the chance to immerse myself in the cutting-edge fields of explainable artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications in cybersecurity. This intersection is teeming with innovation and offers groundbreaking ways to bolster our digital defenses in an era where cyber threats are increasingly sophisticated.

As an undergraduate student with a fervent interest in machine learning, diving into this research has been incredibly fulfilling. It has been an eye-opening journey to see firsthand how the principles of AI can be applied to develop robust cybersecurity solutions. My excitement lies in exploring how to make these AI systems not just powerful, but also transparent and accountable. Given the critical role of cybersecurity in protecting our digital lives, the significance of building trust in AI systems cannot be overstated.

This experience has also prompted me to consider the broader implications of my work. Ethical considerations, such as bias in AI or the privacy of data, are crucial challenges we must navigate. Addressing these issues has been intellectually stimulating and has underscored the importance of developing technology with a conscience.

Most importantly, being part of this pioneering research project as an undergraduate has reinforced my determination to carve out a career at the intersection of machine learning and cybersecurity. The possibility of my work influencing the future of cybersecurity practices, making digital spaces safer and more reliable, is incredibly motivating. It’s a reminder of the tangible impact that my chosen field of study can have on society.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I believe as an undergraduate researcher I believe that my work can contribute to laying the foundation for future advancements in this field. By exploring the intersection of explainable AI and digital forensics, I was able to identify key challenges, opportunities, and potential research directions that can guide and inspire future scholars and professionals in this domain. The focus on the ethical, legal, and social implications of using explainable AI in digital forensics is particularly impactful. As an undergraduate researcher, bringing my perspective could contribute to shaping the responsible development and deployment of these technologies. I believe Digital forensics plays a crucial role in cybersecurity investigations, law enforcement, and the prosecution of cybercrimes. Research conducted in this area can indirectly contribute to enhancing the capabilities of these fields by proposing methods for more reliable, trustworthy, and interpretable AI-driven forensic analyses, ultimately aiding in the fight against cybercrime and the protection of digital assets.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Make good connections. Engage in on-campus clubs and activities that focus on your major and your own career goals. Try to reach out to faculty who have engaged in research projects or even one of your peers and create connections there as well. I feel like there are a lot of opportunities to engage in research on campus which could help you gain experience for future internships and full time positions.

During my internship at The Equity Brain Trust, I was deeply immersed in a dynamic environment where I played a pivotal role in supporting entrepreneurs and driving strategic insights. My daily responsibilities were multifaceted and involved conducting extensive business and market research to provide valuable guidance to 10 entrepreneurs. This included delving into various industries, analyzing market trends, and identifying growth opportunities.

One significant aspect of my role was overseeing the backend data for the Equiscore BI app, where I demonstrated proficiency in API and database testing, along with utilizing SQL queries. This allowed me to ensure the smooth functioning of the app and maintain data integrity.

Collaboration was key to our success, and I actively engaged with my team using tools like Jira for efficient project management. Together, we conceptualized innovative business strategies and developed Ideal Customer Profiles (ICP) and buyer personas to better understand and cater to diverse customer segments.

Creativity and analytical skills were also put to the test as I utilized Canva for design tasks and harnessed Tableau for in-depth data analysis. From crafting compelling presentation decks for business conferences to generating comprehensive reports, I had the opportunity to showcase my abilities in various domains.

Furthermore, I actively contributed to enhancing sales strategies by conducting thorough analyses and implementing actionable insights. This hands-on experience not only enriched my understanding of business dynamics but also honed my skills in problem-solving and strategic thinking on a day-to-day basis.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
The journey to securing my position at The Equity Brain Trust started when I stumbled upon the opportunity listed on the UMBC Career Center platform, specifically through the MTIP Program. Intrigued by the description, I wasted no time in submitting my application in September, eager to delve into the world of strategic business insights.

The application process unfolded across three rigorous rounds, each presenting its own unique challenges. It commenced with a stimulating phone interview where I had the chance to articulate my passion for business exploration and showcase my capabilities. Following this initial interaction, I advanced to the subsequent rounds, which comprised a virtual interview and a comprehensive writing task.

Navigating through each stage of the process allowed me to not only demonstrate my qualifications and enthusiasm for the role but also provided invaluable opportunities for personal and professional growth. It was a journey filled with anticipation, dedication, and ultimately, immense satisfaction upon securing the internship opportunity with The Equity Brain Trust.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
What I've found most fulfilling about my position and the organization is the chance to collaborate closely with entrepreneurs and directly interact with key figures such as the CEO, CTO, Research Director, and HR. Their mentorship and guidance not only clarified any doubts or queries I had but also provided invaluable training opportunities. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply and sharpen my skills in data analysis and UI/UX design, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Moreover, the friendly and supportive atmosphere within the team fostered a sense of camaraderie and made every day at work enjoyable. This positive environment greatly contributed to my overall satisfaction and made the learning journey even more rewarding. Overall, my experience at the organization has been immensely beneficial for my professional growth.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I firmly believe that my contributions have left a lasting impact on the Equity Brain Trust's journey towards success. Beyond fulfilling my assigned tasks, I actively engaged in fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment within the organization. Our weekly Wednesday meetings, characterized by casual conversations and a fun atmosphere, provided invaluable insights into the significance of equity in the workspace. Interacting with a diverse array of entrepreneurs on a daily basis was both a privilege and a learning experience, allowing me to broaden my understanding of various industries and business dynamics.

Moreover, my involvement in database tasks, business strategy development, and research on economic development agencies has equipped me with a versatile skill set that extends beyond traditional boundaries. Delving into the realm of economic development agencies and nonprofit organizations has deepened my appreciation for the pivotal role they play in driving positive societal change. Through my work, I've not only contributed to the growth and success of the Equity Brain Trust but have also honed my abilities to navigate complex challenges and drive meaningful impact in the broader community.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
To fellow students embarking on the journey of seeking an internship or similar experience, my advice would be to take a proactive approach in exploring opportunities that resonate with your interests and aspirations. Make full use of university career centers and networking events to uncover potential openings and forge connections with professionals in your desired field.

When applying for positions, invest time in customizing your resume and cover letter to highlight not only your skills but also your genuine passion for the role. During interviews, demonstrate your eagerness to learn and contribute to the organization by showcasing your unique strengths and experiences.

As a key member of the Digital Learning Solutions Department, I play a vital role in bridging the gap between data and decision-making. My primary responsibilities revolve around utilizing data analytics and data visualization tools to support various departments within the company. Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Ad Hoc Reporting: I am tasked with handling a wide range of ad hoc requests from different departments in the organization. These requests span various data-related queries and information needs. My role involves quickly understanding the unique requirements of each request and curating customized reports and dashboards to provide actionable insights.
Data Visualization: I work extensively with various data visualization tools integrated with the Learning Management System (LMS). This involves using tools like Power BI, Tableau, or other specialized software to transform raw data into clear and interactive visualizations. These visualizations are designed to facilitate data-driven decision-making and enable stakeholders to easily interpret and derive value from the data.
Quantitative Analysis: In addition to creating reports and dashboards, I have extended my skill set to include quantitative analysis. This involves delving deeper into the data to uncover trends, patterns, and actionable insights. I use statistical and analytical techniques to extract meaningful information from the data and present it in a clear and comprehensible manner.
Report Maintenance: I take on the responsibility of maintaining and updating existing reports and dashboards. This ensures that stakeholders have access to the most up-to-date and accurate information. Regular maintenance includes data refresh, ensuring data integrity, and implementing any necessary changes based on feedback and evolving business needs.
Customization for Stakeholders: I work closely with stakeholders to understand their specific needs and requirements. By aligning reports and dashboards with their preferences, I ensure that the data presented is tailored to address their unique objectives. This customization enhances the effectiveness of our data-driven decision-making process.
Monthly Reporting System: I have established a structured monthly reporting system using Power BI. This system provides a consistent and regular flow of critical insights and key performance indicators (KPIs) to decision-makers. These reports help leadership stay informed about the performance of various initiatives, track progress toward goals, and make data-informed decisions.

I was very active with applying online but what helped me was going and talking to people, finding people to refer me, and networking with as many people as I can.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
I am genuinely passionate about the work I do and the dynamic environment I am a part of. This passion is fueled not only by the tasks at hand but also by the incredible people I have the privilege of working with. The collaborative spirit within the Digital Learning Solutions Department and across various departments in the organization has been a constant source of inspiration. It's a wonderful feeling to be part of a team that values knowledge sharing, creativity, and innovation.

What truly drives me in my role is the commitment to continuous learning and exploration. I firmly believe that in the ever-evolving landscape of data analytics and digital learning, staying at the forefront requires a steadfast commitment to learning and adapting. Whether it's mastering a new data visualization technique, diving into the intricacies of statistical analysis, or exploring the latest developments in the field, every opportunity to learn is an opportunity to excel.

The beauty of this commitment is that it doesn't just benefit me individually; it directly contributes to the value I can bring to the organization. Customizing reports to align with stakeholders' unique needs and establishing a structured monthly reporting system have been cornerstones of my impact, making the communication of data needs more efficient and accessible to all. What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
I would say talk to as many people as you can, get your resume reviewed from people, and don't give up, as no efforts go to waste.

In my role as a Data Analyst Intern at ActiveCharge, my primary focus centers around the meticulous analysis of both weather data and wind turbine data. Our central project aims to develop a robust model for the accurate detection of faulty wind turbine blades. Here's a glimpse into a typical day in my internship:

I commence my day by ensuring that the weather and wind turbine data is not just collected but also thoroughly cleansed and prepared for in-depth analysis. This initial step is pivotal to ensure the quality and accuracy of our subsequent work.

The core of my responsibilities lies in the comprehensive exploration of the data. I engage in performing rigorous statistical analyses and craft visual representations that illuminate potential patterns and correlations, particularly with respect to turbine blade faults. This process requires a keen eye for detail and a data-driven mindset.

In my capacity as an intern, I also play a key role in keeping the team informed and updated. Regularly, I share progress reports, highlighting our achievements, and addressing any challenges or roadblocks that we may encounter. Effective communication is an essential component of our collaborative efforts.

In summary, my internship at ActiveCharge provides an exciting and engaging opportunity to immerse myself in the world of data analysis and model development, all within the context of renewable energy solutions. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities for growth, and I am delighted to contribute to a project that has the potential to make a positive impact in the field.

I discovered the opportunity for my position through an active job search during my search for a summer internship. I had been proactively networking and reaching out to various companies via email. Fortunately, I came across ActiveCharge, and it happened that they were actively looking for a Data Analyst Intern. After an initial email contact, they conducted an interview, and I was fortunate to secure the position.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
One of the most gratifying aspects of my position and being part of this organization is the ever-changing nature of my daily tasks. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities, allowing me to continually learn and grow. This variety keeps the work engaging and exciting, and it has provided me with a broad range of experiences in a relatively short period. It's been a valuable opportunity to expand my skill set and adapt to different aspects of the data analysis field, making it a truly rewarding experience.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
When seeking an internship or similar experience, my advice is to prioritize active networking by engaging with professionals and attending industry events, which can open doors to valuable connections. Be persistent in your application efforts, as rejections are common; keeping a consistent application schedule is crucial. Tailoring your applications to specific companies by conducting thorough research showcases your genuine interest. Lastly, start your internship search early to increase your chances of securing the right opportunity.
