Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization

    Consortium (MDSGC)

Location of the Organization (City, State): College
    Park, Maryland

Title of position: Robotics and Controls Software
    Engineering Intern,

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research
    opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

This summer, I am interning with the Maryland Space Grant
Consortium (MDSGC) at the University of Maryland’s Space Systems Laboratory
(SSL), where I am working on VERTEX, a Mars rover platform as a part of NASA's
BioBot research initiative. My primary focus is on robotics and control
systems, particularly the rover’s suspension and drivetrain. On a day-to-day
basis, I write software in both Python and C++ to control and fine-tune rover
behavior, using the Robot Operating System 2 (ROS 2) framework. A key part of
my work involves interfacing with the Galil motion controller to issue motor
commands and monitor performance. I spend a significant amount of time testing
code in both simulation and on the physical rover, identifying issues in real
time, and collaborating with other team members to implement solutions. This
experience has deepened my understanding of motion control, embedded systems,
and the practical application of software in robotics for space environments.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did
you hear of the position and submit your application?

During spring break, I received an email from my
Thermodynamics professor about open internship positions at Maryland labs
through the Maryland Space Grant Consortium (MDSGC). Knowing the program is
highly competitive, I applied immediately. After submitting my application, I
met with my professor to learn more about MDSGC, discuss the available
opportunities, and hear about his own involvement with the program. Within a
month, I was invited to interview with Dr. Dave Akin, the director of the Space
Systems Laboratory (SSL), and was officially offered the position shortly
    afterward.

What resources did you use to find your current
    experience?

Faculty Connections

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and
    organization?

What I’ve enjoyed most about my internship at the Space
Systems Laboratory is the chance to apply the engineering knowledge I’ve gained
at UMBC to a hands-on, space-related project that aligns with my career goals.
Working on VERTEX, the lab’s Mars rover platform, has given me a meaningful
opportunity to contribute to the field of space exploration. I’ve been
fascinated by space for as long as I can remember, and being part of a team
that’s developing robotics for planetary environments feels like a dream come
true. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how the concepts I’ve learned in class
translate into solving real-world challenges on a project that pushes the
    boundaries of what’s possible.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your
    work?

Life support systems are extremely heavy, even in
reduced-gravity environments like the Moon or Mars, and carrying them can
significantly limit astronaut mobility. NASA’s BioBot initiative addresses this
by using a robotic rover to carry the life support system, connected to the
astronaut via an umbilical, and designed to autonomously follow them. Through
my work on VERTEX, I’m contributing to the development of rover technologies
that support this vision. By helping to design and implement advanced control
systems, I’m helping to make future space exploration more accessible, less
physically demanding, and ultimately safer for astronauts of all sizes and
    strengths.

What advice would you give to another student who is
seeking an internship or similar experience?

Build genuine relationships with professors, mentors, and
professionals in the field you’re passionate about. They can be an invaluable
source of guidance, opportunities, and support. At the same time, focus on
maintaining a strong academic record, as it not only demonstrates your
commitment but also opens doors to competitive programs. Don’t be afraid to
take initiative: reach out, ask questions, and apply early. Internships are not
just about experience, they’re about proving to yourself and others that you’re
capable of turning your passion into a career.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you
liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the
    Career Center.

Working on VERTEX at UMD's Space System Laboratory has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my academic career. I loved applying my engineering skills to a real-world space robotics project that aligns with my passion for exploration. The Career Center's resume-building resources were incredibly helpful in preparing my application and making me a more competitive candidate.

Major: Visual Arts (Cinematic Arts Concentration) and
    Minor in Photography

Current Class Level: Senior

This semester I completed a(n)...: Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization
    Name): Cato Institute

Location of the Organization (City, State): Washington
    DC

Title of position: Media Production and Audiovisual
    Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research
opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities: At the Cato
Institute, I worked with the audiovisual team on a variety of multimedia
projects. I learned how to operate the control room during live productions,
including setting up cameras and managing the live switcher for debates and
live streamed interviews and events. I also edited multi-camera interviews for
Cato’s platforms. One of my main projects was producing, conducting interviews
for, and editing the 2025 Thank You Paslaqua Family video. This
documentary-style piece highlighted the impact of the internship program
through intern stories and served to recognize the generosity of the Paslaqua
Family while promoting the mission of the Cato Institute.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did
you hear of the position and submit your application? I heard about the
position in October and applied in early November. In late November, they
requested additional materials. I had an interview on December 9 and received a
call the next day saying I had been accepted. I started working there in late
    January.

What resources did you use to find your current
experience? To find my current experience Handshake.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and
    organization?

Honestly, I loved everything about this
experience. The team was incredibly friendly and patient, and they trusted me
to work on live productions—which was so exciting. I still remember the
adrenaline rush the first time I operated the live camera switcher. I learned a
lot in the control room, especially because they use new, high-quality
equipment. Their location is also very convenient. What stood out to me most
was how communicative and organized they were—from the beginning of the
application process to the very last day of my internship.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your
    work?

I think I made an impact by quickly stepping into a role
with real responsibility. Being trusted to help with live productions and to
fully produce a key video project on my own made me feel like I was truly
contributing. I brought creativity, organization, and attention to detail—and I
really believe that helped Cato present itself in a strong, professional way to
both the public and donors. I also feel proud of helping communicate Cato’s
mission through thoughtful video content. Whether I was editing policy
discussions or working on the Thank You Paslaqua Family video, my goal was
always to tell stories that resonate and highlight the work being done.

What advice would you give to another student who is
seeking an internship or similar experience? I would say: tailor your
resume and go after what you’re genuinely curious about. Once you’re in the
role, show your team how the experience is impacting you. Be open about how
much you want to learn, don’t be afraid to ask for help, and if you have
ideas—share them! Showing initiative and enthusiasm really makes a difference.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you
liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the
    Career Center.

The Career Center helped me tailor my resume and better
understand my goals, which allowed me to apply for positions that truly support
my growth and help me work toward my future aspirations.

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: Blueprint Robotics
Location of the Organization: Baltimore, Maryland
Title of Position: Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
As an Intern at Blueprint Robotics, I worked on optimizing manufacturing processes to improve efficiency and productivity. My day-to-day responsibilities included conducting time studies, analyzing production data using Smartsheet, and identifying areas for process improvement. I collaborated with cross-functional teams and factory floor personnel to implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that enhanced workflow consistency.
Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
I first learned about the position at Blueprint Robotics through the Indeed job portal. After reviewing the job description, I found that the role aligned well with my skills and career goals, so I tailored my resume and cover letter to highlight my experience. I submitted my application a few weeks before the deadline and soon received an invitation for an interview. The process included both technical and behavioral questions, where I discussed previous projects and my knowledge of lean manufacturing principles. Shortly after, I received an offer.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
UMBC Career Center, Alumni Networking, Handshake, LinkedIn, and other social media platforms.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
I’ve really enjoyed working on real-world process improvement initiatives that have a direct impact on efficiency and productivity. Collaborating with cross-functional teams gave me valuable insights into manufacturing operations, problem-solving, and quality control. The supportive and innovative environment at Blueprint Robotics made this experience incredibly rewarding.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
Through data analysis and process improvements, I’ve helped optimize production efficiency, reduce downtime, and enhance standard operating procedures. Implementing an inventory tracking system and conducting time studies led to measurable improvements in workflow and productivity. I feel proud to have contributed to streamlining operations and driving results.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Start early and tailor your resume to highlight your most relevant skills. Be proactive—reach out to professionals, network, and use resources like the Career Center. Once in the role, take initiative, ask questions, and go beyond your assigned tasks. Showing enthusiasm and problem-solving skills can leave a lasting impression.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center:
My internship at Blueprint Robotics gave me hands-on experience in industrial engineering and process optimization. The Career Center’s guidance helped me refine my resume and connect with the right opportunities, making this valuable experience possible.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
Intrigued by the organization’s mission, I researched its work and decided that the role aligned with my academic background and career interests. I submitted my application in late fall, which included my resume and a statement of interest detailing my passion for global justice and media advocacy. Shortly after, I was invited to interview with a representative from the organization. The interview focused on my writing and research skills, as well as my understanding of human rights issues. After discussing how my experience in political science, media, and communications could contribute to the organization, I was offered the position. I eagerly accepted, excited for the opportunity to engage in meaningful work at the intersection of policy, media, and advocacy.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
LinkedIn or other social media.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
What I’ve enjoyed most about my position at the World Service Authority is the opportunity to engage in meaningful human rights advocacy while applying my skills in writing, research, and media. Working on the organization’s newsletter has been particularly rewarding, as it allows me to inform and inspire others about critical issues like refugee assistance and statelessness. I appreciate the organization's global perspective and commitment to helping individuals who often fall through the cracks of traditional legal systems. Additionally, I’ve enjoyed the flexibility and independence of the role, which has allowed me to take initiative on projects and deepen my understanding of international law and advocacy.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
Through my work at the World Service Authority, I believe I have made an impact by helping to amplify the voices of refugees, stateless individuals, and those seeking international legal protections. By writing and curating content for the organization’s newsletter, I have contributed to raising awareness about human rights issues and connecting people with vital resources. My research on international law and policy has supported the organization’s advocacy efforts, helping to inform strategies for assisting individuals in need. Additionally, my outreach efforts have helped strengthen relationships between the organization and other human rights groups, fostering collaboration in the fight for global justice.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
My biggest piece of advice for students seeking an internship, especially in advocacy or human rights, is to be proactive and intentional in your search. Look for opportunities that align with your academic background and personal interests, and don’t be afraid to reach out to professors, advisors, or professionals in the field for guidance. When applying, tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight relevant skills—whether it’s research, writing, or public outreach—and emphasize your passion for the work. Networking is also key; engaging with organizations through events, social media, or informational interviews can help you stand out. Once you secure an internship, take initiative, ask questions, and seek out projects that challenge you. Lastly, treat every experience as a learning opportunity, even if it’s outside your comfort zone, because those moments often lead to the greatest personal and professional growth.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.
"I've loved the opportunity to use my writing and research skills to support human rights advocacy at the World Service Authority. This internship has allowed me to engage with global justice issues in a meaningful way. The Career Center was instrumental in helping me refine my application materials and feel confident throughout the process."

Catonsville Office (Catonsville Senior Center), Maryland
Training: Bykota Senior Center, Towson, MD

Title of Position: Ombudsman Program Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
I’m currently interning with the Baltimore County Department of Aging’s Ombudsman Program. The ombudsmen are the voice for older adults in long-term care facilities—advocating for their rights, addressing their concerns, and empowering them to speak up. I’ve visited various facilities, supported the team in addressing resident concerns, and documented visits to better understand residents’ challenges. I also worked on projects like creating a printable assisted living facility resource and collecting data on resident/family councils.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
As part of the Management of Aging Services degree, an internship was required. Professor Lauren Price shared the Ombudsman Program opportunity with me. After researching the role and feeling aligned with its mission, I applied via the county website and interviewed with Lynn McCamie, who became an incredible mentor. After training, I was placed in the Catonsville office.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
Faculty connections—specifically Professor Lauren Price’s recommendation—and county government resources.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
Everything! Especially building meaningful connections with residents and empowering them through conversation and advocacy. I also appreciated the diverse learning experiences—from webinars to hands-on work—that expanded my understanding of long-term care systems.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I’ve served as a consistent, compassionate presence for residents, helping them feel heard and respected. I’ve also become more aware of systemic challenges in long-term care and feel inspired to contribute to policy change in the future.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
Go in with an open mind and a passion to learn. Engage deeply with the experience, ask questions, and take time to reflect on what this work teaches you about your values and goals. Learn policies—they’re the key to making meaningful change.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center:
The Career Center was a huge support throughout my journey. I met with Farhan Nadeem through Handshake, and his personalized resume/cover letter advice made a big difference. The Career Center offers valuable tools and guidance—every student should take advantage of it.
