    <div class="html-content"><div>The Hennigan Lab has a new paper, "Measurement artifacts in the dithiothreitol (DTT) oxidative potential assay caused by interactions between aqueous metals and phosphate buffer", which was just published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials.  </div><div><br></div><div>The article is available here:</div><div><a href="https://lnkd.in/efBvfvpW" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://lnkd.in/efBvfvpW</a></div><div><br></div><div><h3>Highlights</h3><div>• A bias in the dithiothreitol (DTT) oxidative potential (OP) assay is characterized.</div><div>• Metal precipitation in the assay is due to interactions with the PO4 buffer matrix.</div><div>• Metal precipitation in the DTT assay has a profound effect on the OP response.</div><div>• The artifact is affected by the PO4 buffer concentration and ionic strength.</div><div>• The assay artifact has implications for studies of particulate matter toxicity.</div></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><h3>Abstract</h3><div>Metals in particulate matter (PM) are hypothesized to have enhanced toxicity based on their ability to catalyze reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. Acellular assays are used to measure the oxidative potential (OP) of PM and its individual components. Many OP assays, including the dithiothreitol (DTT) assay, use a phosphate buffer matrix to simulate biological conditions (pH 7.4 and 37 °C). Prior work from our group observed transition metal precipitation in the DTT assay, consistent with thermodynamic equilibria. In this study, we characterized the effects of metal precipitation on OP measured by the DTT assay. Metal precipitation was affected by aqueous metal concentrations, ionic strength, and phosphate concentrations in ambient PM sampled in Baltimore, MD and a standard PM sample (NIST SRM-1648a, Urban Particulate Matter). Critically, differences in metal precipitation induced differing OP responses of the DTT assay as a function of phosphate concentration in all PM samples analyzed. These results indicate that comparison of DTT assay results obtained at differing phosphate buffer concentrations is highly problematic. Further, these results have implications for other chemical and biological assays that use phosphate buffer for pH control and their use to infer PM toxicity.</div></div></div>

  <Title>CBEE represented at 3MT semi-final for 3 consecutive years</Title>
  <Tagline>Jayashree Yalamanchili, 2021 GEARS 3MT winner</Tagline>

    <div class="html-content"><div><strong>Jayashree Yalamanchili, </strong>PhD candidate, participated in the semi-final 3MT competition during the 2022 Annual Meeting of the Conference of Southern Graduate Schools in Raleigh, NC. Her talk was titled "The fate of transition metals in phosphate-based acellular assays used to determine Particulate Matter (PM) reactivity". Jayashree is advised by Dr. Christopher Hennigan and Dr. Brian Reed.  </div><div><div><br></div></div><div>Jayashree won the <a href="https://gears.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">GEARS 3MT</a> conducted at UMBC in May 2021. She is the <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/cbee/posts?tag=3mt" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">third doctoral student</a> in the department to win the GEARS 3MT and the fourth GEARS 3MT winner to be advised by a faculty member in CBEE. </div><div><br></div><div>3MT celebrates the exciting research conducted by Ph.D. students. Developed by The University of Queensland, the exercise cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. The competition supports their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.</div><div><br></div><div><div>We are exceedingly proud of Jayashree's success and that of CBEE students in past 3MT competitions!</div></div></div>

    <div class="html-content"><p>A <strong>PhD student</strong> is sought for <strong>Fall 2022</strong> to carry out a PhD project under <strong><a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/josephson/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Tyler Josephson's</a></strong> guidance on developing and applying molecular simulation techniques and artificial intelligence tools to gain molecular-scale insights on processes in the environment to enable new solutions for cleaner air and water. </p>
    <p>Applicants should have a Masters or Bachelor’s degree in a related field and can apply to either the Environmental Engineering PhD program or the Chemical &amp; Biochemical Engineering PhD program</p>

  <Title>Masters Student Trainee opportunity in the urban environment</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>UMBC is seeking applicants in the following areas for urban environmental work:</p>
    <h3><strong>Masters Student Traineeships - iCARE</strong></h3>
    <div>The<a href="https://icare.umbc.edu/icare-masters-degree/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> i</a><a href="https://icare.umbc.edu/icare-masters-degree/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">CARE NRT</a> master’s degree is a 2-year interdisciplinary degree program with a dual mission of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice combined with research focused on improving the health of Baltimore Harbor as a socioecosystem. Students will be mentored by a UMBC faculty member and a non-academic scientist from a government agency, non-profit, or industry. That research team will be embedded in a larger stakeholder team, meaning that each student and their mentors will identify one or more community members (non-scientists) with a stake in the research to be engaged in the research from development to completion. </div>

    <div>Students will also be taking skills courses (community leadership, DEIJ, oral and written communication) and disciplinary courses appropriate to their research project. </div><div><br></div><div><div>Graduate students in our program will follow a two-year schedule that includes a series of professional and disciplinary courses, plus a research project that will comprise their master’s thesis. For the research project, students will be mentored by a team that includes at least one faculty member and one partner practitioner working on projects related to the Baltimore Harbor and surrounding environments.</div></div><div> </div><div><div>Student Benefits Include:</div><div><ul><li> $34,000 annual stipend, full tuition coverage, fees, &amp; health insurance.</li><li> Up to $7,500 in research expenses.</li><li> Mentoring and networking with employers across the environmental sector.</li></ul></div>

    <div class="html-content"><p>One postdoctoral research associate position is available starting early 2022 in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The selected candidate will be expected to work with Dr. Chris Hennigan on a DoE-funded research project focused on atmospheric multiphase chemistry. The project will characterize light-absorbing organic compounds (brown carbon) in atmospheric cloud water. The candidate will be expected to work closely with a Ph.D. student and undergraduate students, and to help in the training and mentoring of the students. The employee will also assist in drafting project reports, making presentations, writing new proposals, and drafting publications. Candidates with a PhD in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or Environmental Science are preferred.
