  <Title>Undergraduate Research: BlaneyLab, UMBC &amp; UC-Irvine</Title>

    <h3>Blaney Lab, UMBC</h3>
<p><strong>When did you start your research on campus? </strong>Fall 2021</p>
<p><strong>What is the focus of your research? </strong>I work on improving the efficiency of recovering nutrients and contaminants from wastewater systems via Donnan Dialysis in Dr. Lee Blaney’s lab. </p>
<p><strong>What advice do you have for students who are interested in getting involved in research on campus?</strong> It is definitely intimidating, joining a research lab where you basically know nothing. But you’re not expected to know everything! You learn as you go, from other members of the lab, the PI, and from doing a little bit of reading on your own. It also helps if the lab is doing research you are actually interested in; doesn’t have to be a lifetime passion, but an interest. Don’t be afraid to reach out to the PI expressing your interest!</p>

<p><strong>What advice do you have for students who are interested in getting involved in research or an internship?</strong></p>
<p>It's a good idea to start looking earlier rather than later for internships/REU programs. A lot of the applications are due around winter break. Also, even if you're not sure if research is for you, apply!!! That's the best way to find out. It's truly an amazing and rewarding experience, especially if you apply to a research program at another university. They typically pay for your housing, food, flight, and you get paid a stipend! Plus, you get to experience a new part of the country and meet some new people along the way.</p>
    <p><strong>Are you a member of any clubs/campus organizations?</strong></p>
<p>American Chemical Society Student Chapter (President)</p>
<p><strong>What are your goals after graduation?</strong></p>
<p>I plan on attending graduate school to pursue my Ph.D.</p>

Revati performed technical evaluations of various chromatography and filtration methods through experiment planning, data collection &amp; analysis.<br></p><p>Revati was one of the winners for the <strong>Intern Project Showcase at Genentech + Roche. </strong></p><p>A total of 10 winners were selected amongst 300 interns in four different categories (research, operations, commercial, business, etc.) through a voting process across all locations in the US. She received first prize in the 'Operations and Quality' category, and was rewarded with a cash prize.</p><p>All participants were required to make a poster and a presentation, along with a short video for explaining the experiments and our overall experience during the 3-day event. </p><h4>What advice do you have for students who are interested in getting involved in research or an internship?</h4>
<p>While it's very tough to crack an internship or a job, I do recommend not settling on the work profile that you receive. When you find what you love to do, most of the professional growth follows evidently.</p>
    <h4><strong>Are you a member of any clubs/campus organizations?</strong></h4>
    <p>Vice President of CBEE GSO.</p>
<h4><strong>What are your goals after graduation?</strong></h4>
<p>Work as a purification development scientist (downstream processing) in industry.</p>

It's daunting to ask professors you haven't met yet to join their lab. Especially if you feel like you're severely underqualified. You, as a student here at UMBC, have the potential to grow and gain those skills to feel 'qualified'. The same goes for internships. It never hurts to try, and the worst that can happen is that they say 'no', but then you can always move on.</div></div><div><br></div><h4>Are you a member of any clubs/campus organizations?</h4><div><span>AIChE, CSA</span></div><div><br></div><h4>What are your goals after graduation?</h4><div>Graduate School</div><div><br></div><h4>Learn more about Margaret Therese Siao: </h4><p><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/margaret-therese-siao-964a27189/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">https://www.linkedin.com/in/margaret-therese-siao-964a27189/ </a></p></div><div><br></div><div>Photo Credit: <em>Margaret Therese Siao</em> </div><div><br></div><div><br></div>

<div class="html-content"><div><strong>Chiad Onyeje, '24 c</strong><strong>hemical engineering</strong></div><div><br></div><div><strong>Internship experience</strong></div>Over the summer, Chiad delved into an Undergraduate Research Internship combining Biomedical Engineering and Nanoscale Science at the Vanderbilt Institution of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE) program. Chiad learned about cell culturing techniques, microparticle formulation strategies, research project design &amp; communication, and microfluidic device development along with the various tools and techniques often required in the growing field. The microfluidic devices fabricated were made to both refine and optimize the production of antioxidant microparticles by flowing separate aqueous and organic phases together, all studied in the Duvall Lab where Chiad worked. The Engineering Marvels have the potential to reduce internal inflammation and a plethora of differing degenerative diseases as a further cascading effect if taken to the public one day.<div><div><br></div><div><strong>What advice would you give to students interested in internships?</strong></div><div>"Always step out of your comfort zones when looking for and being a part of the internship. I debated for a while about where to do my internship and ultimately decided on Vanderbilt because of how different the atmosphere would be, along with the differences between Baltimore and Nashville. Furthermore, every internship opportunity is a chance to explore a new side to yourself: tack on a goal or skill you'd want to learn alongside the experience that you wouldn't/couldn't do otherwise. Advice like this is what makes the experience far more impactful and way more fondly remembered!" </div><div><br></div><div><strong>What are your plans after graduation?</strong></div><div>"Moving up to graduate school to pursue a Masters and eventually a Ph.D!
