    <div class="html-content">Michael Fleming, ENEN PhD Student in Dr. Lee Blaney's lab, was selected as an ACS Bridge Career &amp; Professional Development Awards Winner for this fall 2021. This financial award is to help defray the cost of registration of the ACS Spring 2021 Virtual Expo and Meeting, the 2021 National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) 47th Annual Virtual Conference, and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Guided Online Course. <div><br></div><div><div>The <a href="https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en/education/students/graduate/bridge-project/students/bridge-travel-award.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">award </a>is open to students who are pursuing a graduate degree in the chemical sciences and are from groups traditionally underrepresented in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. Namely, underrepresented minorities include African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans. The goal of this award is to advance the career and professional development of graduate students. The professional development award will defray the cost of any online workshops, courses, virtual conferences, and/or events that will assist URM graduate students in the chemical sciences with their career and professional development goals.     <div class="html-content">Jahir Antonio Batista Andrade, ENEN PhD Student, received a Certificate of Merit for his presentation at the American Chemical Society (ACS) Fall 2020 Virtual Meeting &amp; Expo. The title of the poster was "Analysis of dissolved organic matter and contaminants of emerging concern to detect leaking sewers in urban streams". The coauthors for the poster are Erick Diaz, Ethan Hain, Ke He and Lee Blaney. Dr. Lee Blaney is Jahir's advisor. <div><div><br></div><div>The Certificate of Merit program recognizes Division members who are making their first ENVR presentation at an ACS national meeting. Jahir's presentation was attended by Division volunteers and judged to be of high quality in both intellectual merit and presentation style.           <div><h4>Ruth Spiker</h4><strong>BS Chemical Engineering, Traditional Track (2019)</strong> </div><div>Ruthie is currently a <strong><em>process integration engineer for Northrop Grumman</em></strong> in Baltimore, MD. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering at UMBC part-time. </div><div><br></div>
          
          <h4>Babu Raman</h4><div><strong>PhD Chemical Engineering (2005)</strong></div><p>Babu Raman is currently the <strong><em>Strategy Leader for Bioengineering and Bioprocessing R&amp;D at</em></strong> <strong><em>Corteva™ Agriscience</em></strong>, Indianapolis, IN. Babu obtained his PhD in Biochemical Engineering from University of Maryland Baltimore County and was a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Oak Ridge National Lab, prior to joining Corteva (then Dow AgroSciences) in 2011. At Corteva, Babu led the development and establishment of the Systems Biology program for targeted engineering of microbial systems for natural product biosynthesis. Subsequently, he served as the Engineering &amp; Systems Biology Platform Leader, responsible for the continued development and deployment of core technologies in automated and high-throughput strain engineering. Babu is passionate about emerging technologies and is actively engaged in identifying and brining in external technologies for accelerating internal R&amp;D efforts.</p><div><h4>David Burgenson</h4></div><div><strong>BS Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Bioengineering Track (2017), MS Chemical Engineering (2020), </strong></div><div><strong>PhD Chemical Engineering (2020)</strong></div><div>David joined <strong><em>Sutro Biopharma</em></strong> in September 2020.</div></div></div><div><br></div><h4>Renee Mitchell</h4><div><strong>BS Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Bioengineering Track (2019), MS Chemical Engineering (2020)</strong></div><div><p>Renne works at <em><strong>Form Energy</strong></em> as a Battery Engineer.</p>
          <h4>Sydney Menikheim</h4></div><div><strong>BS Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Bioengineering Track (2017), </strong></div><div><strong>MS Chemical Engineering (2019)</strong></div><div>Sydney currently works at <strong><em>W.R. Grace</em></strong> in Curtis Bay, MD. She is in her second year in the company's Manufacturing Leadership Program (MLP). During her first rotation, Sydney worked in Columbia, MD, at the company's headquarters where she was a member of the Sourcing and Procurement Team. On this team, Sydney was able to employ her engineering knowledge by helping to estimate the cost of potential insourcing projects.     <Title>Masters Student Trainee opportunity in the urban environment</Title>

          <div class="html-content">UMBC is seeking applicants in the following areas for urban environmental work:  <h3><strong>Masters Student Traineeships - iCARE</strong></h3><div>
          
          The<a href="https://icare.umbc.edu/icare-masters-degree/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> i</a><a href="https://icare.umbc.edu/icare-masters-degree/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">CARE NRT</a><span> </span><span>master’s degree is a 2-year interdisciplinary degree program with a dual mission of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice combined with research focused on improving the health of Baltimore Harbor as a socioecosystem. Students will be mentored by a UMBC faculty member and a non-academic scientist from a government agency, non-profit, or industry. That research team will be embedded in a larger stakeholder team, meaning that each student and their mentors will identify one or more community members (non-scientists) with a stake in the research to be engaged in the research from development to completion. Students will also be taking skills courses (community leadership, DEIJ, oral and written communication) and disciplinary courses appropriate to their research project.</span>
          
          Students complete requirements for the program while earning a degree from UMBC in <a href="https://biology.umbc.edu/grad/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Biological Sciences</a>, <a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/academics/graduate-degree-programs/m-s-environmental-engineering/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Environmental Engineering</a>, <a href="https://ges.umbc.edu/graduate-programs/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Geography &amp; Environmental Systems</a>, or the cross-campus Marine Estuarine Environmental Science (<a href="https://www.mees.umd.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">MEES</a>) program.   <Title>ICARE NRT Master's Degree Program now accepting applications</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p><strong>The ICARE NRT Master’s Degree Program in community-engaged environmental science and social justice</strong> is now accepting applications. ICARE supports students performing research focused on improving the health of Baltimore Harbor as a socioecosystem. For best consideration, please complete the online application process by January 1, 2021! </p>
    <p><a href="https://icare.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">ICARE </a>is a 2-year master’s degree that you will receive from one of five departments or programs at UMBC, so you will submit two applications: </p><ol><li>Graduate School application for the department or program of your preferred faculty mentor. </li><li>ICARE program specific application</li></ol>Both links are available on our <a href="https://icare.umbc.edu/application/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">application portal</a>, and it does not matter which application you submit first. <div><br><p>Note, however, that departments/programs may have their own, unique deadlines. </p><p><a href="https://cbee.umbc.edu/academics/graduate-degree-programs/m-s-environmental-engineering/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Environmental Engineering Master's Program</a> application is due January 1, 2021.</p><p>The ICARE program will begin reviewing applicants after January 1, 2021. Also worth noting is that the ICARE program will be running for the next 5 years, and plans to train 3 cohorts of students, earning degrees in 2023, 2024, and 2025.</p>
