Apply for STRiVE 2022 by 11/15 UMBC’s popular leadership for social impact retreat

UMBC’s STRiVE retreat has inspired hundreds of undergraduate students in the past 13 years. Now it's your turn. Spend five days building community and developing skills while exploring leadership for social impact. You will emerge with greater clarity and confidence about the contributions you want to make.

This year’s STRiVE retreat will take place January 10-14, 2022. STRiVE participants will make new friends, discover their strengths and values, learn how to work more effectively in groups, envision contributions they could make at UMBC, and tackle both simulated and real leadership and social change challenges. Past STRiVE participants have gotten deeply involved in campus organizations and initiatives, and have made phenomenal contributions.

To apply for a spot in STRiVE 2022, complete this form by Monday, November 15, 2021. 

The Center for Democracy and Civic Life hosts STRiVE in partnership with the Student Government Association, with support from PNC Bank.. More information on this program is available below.

STRiVE: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is STRiVE?

STRiVE is an intensive and engaging, five day leadership for social impact retreat that helps inspire and support students in becoming more effective leaders and contributors to their communities, especially the UMBC community. STRiVE participants develop friendships; discover strengths and values; learn how to work more effectively in groups; envision contributions they could make at UMBC; engage issues relating to identity, privilege, and systemic oppression; and tackle both simulated and real leadership and social change challenges.

Do I have to be an “involved” student to attend STRiVE?

STRiVE will be helpful to any student regardless of previous involvement or leadership experience. No prior experience is necessary. For many participants, STRiVE will be their first step on the path to deep engagement at UMBC. We are looking for a diverse group of students committed to developing their skills and applying them to contribute to positive change in the campus community. The application asks about campus involvement only to give the STRiVE planning team a sense of the different perspectives participants will bring to the retreat.

When is STRiVE?

STRiVE 2022 will take place from January 10 - 14, 2022. To participate, you must be available to attend the entire retreat.

Where will STRiVE be held?

We are planning to host STRiVE 2022 in-person with appropriate COVID safety measures at Skycroft Conference Center in Middletown, MD (round trip bus transportation from the UMBC campus will be provided to participants). Participants will stay in motel-style rooms and all activities will be held on site. 

How much does it cost to attend STRiVE?

UMBC covers most of the cost of each participant’s attendance. However, each participant pays a $100, non-refundable contribution toward the retreat's cost. Financial assistance is available. If you are selected to participate in STRiVE 2022, we will send you a form that includes the financial aid request. We do not want the $100 contribution to be a barrier to anyone’s participation.

When is the application due?

Monday, November 15, 2021.

When will accepted applicants be informed?

All applicants will receive emails in late November letting them know about the status of their applications.

The American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ American Democracy Project (of which UMBC is a member) is hosting Global Literacy Talks, a series of lively facilitated conversation filled with civil discourse and, most importantly, your voice.

The series kicks off this year on October 20 from 1-2 p.m. ET with a conversation about the current situation for Afghan women seeking to gain an education. Nadia Hashimi, MD, of the Afghan-American Foundation and Haris Tarin, Senior Advisor of the Operation Allies Welcome (OAW), will share some background about the situation. 

Participants will spend time in facilitated breakout rooms discussing their concerns and then have a meeting of the whole where participants can ask guests more questions and discuss avenues of advocacy. 

No previous knowledge of the issue is needed to explore this topic. Register today.

Panelist Bios: 

Nadia Hashimi is a pediatrician turned internationally bestselling author. Her novels for adults and children are inspired by the people and history of Afghanistan and have been translated into 16 languages. She is a member of the US Afghan Women's Council, Afghan American Foundation, Montgomery County Commission on Health, and serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations.  Originally from New York, she lives with her husband and four children in Potomac, Maryland.
 
Haris Tarin is a Senior Advisor of the Operation Allies Welcome at the Department of Homeland Security. He has extensive background in public policy, civil rights, international affairs and advocacy. He has been published by the Washington Post, LA Times, CNN and has appeared dozens of times on domestic and foreign media outlets.

The University System of Maryland encompasses 12 institutions, including UMBC, and three regional higher education centers. It employs more than 16,000 faculty members and 25,000 staff members, and owns almost 1,000 buildings. Its annual operating budget is more than $5 billion. There are more than 170,000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at its various institutions. 

How would you like to represent all of those students as a member of the Board of Regents, the system's governing body? 

Please take a look at this description of the Student Regent position and consider applying. Please also pass the information along to friends who may be interested. The Student Regent will serve from July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2024, serving as the voting Student Regent in 2023-2024. All applicants should be planning to graduate in spring 2024 or later.

This year’s conference is titled “The Shape of Us: Water Ways and Movement.” Participants will consider water as both a focus of, and inspiration for, publicly engaged scholarship, creative practices, and cultural organizing. 
 
The two-day program will further showcase the work of IA members and research collectives, participatory workshops, and offer connective spaces to network, dialogue, learn, and strategize.

The Center for Democracy and Civic Life hosted the program in collaboration with Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion, and Belonging (i3b), Off-Campus Student Services, and the Wisdom Institute.
