Welcome to UMBC

    by David Hoffman

The parking lots are filling, the doors stand open, and all the people we have been waiting for, the ones who will make our community complete for the coming year, are arriving to fill our residence halls and lecture halls, athletic fields and offices. On a campus that has been open for 47 years, we are making a new beginning. For the first time, all of us are here in exactly this combination. Now come the days of handshakes and first words, of mutual exploration as we discover how we will enact our purposes together.

If you are just starting here, the first thing to know about UMBC is that it is neither a collection of buildings nor a catalog of courses, but a confluence of stories. Each of us has one: we started somewhere else; we lived, and we learned. We all arrive at UMBC with something to offer. UMBC’s tremendous diversity signifies many things to us, not least that each one of us—student, faculty or staff member—has something that we can, and must, contribute to make this community whole. Each of us can be and become our best selves here; each of us belongs.

The UMBC you are joining is diverse, scrappy, nimble, creative, caring, intense and eager. We thrive on combining our talents and our energy in scholarship, work and play that builds community. As our Provost, Philip Rous, has said, “we are all here because we want to make a difference, and we do.” UMBC is less than 50 years old (incoming freshmen: we’ll celebrate our 50th anniversary at the start of your senior year), and still being created by our collective contributions. As UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski has said, everyone here in the first 50 years is a pioneer. It is a reminder that our contributions matter, not just for ourselves but for all those who will join this community, and see it as a beacon, in the decades to come.

I love all of these things about UMBC. I love that the builders waited to see where people walked before laying the sidewalks. I love that we have a renowned chess team but no football team. I love the hidden treasures: the sculpture park and rock garden, the amphitheater and the observatory. I love that the big event the night before classes start is called Big Crazy Fun Night. I love that so many UMBC administrators, faculty members and staff members view their contributions here as living their purposes rather than just doing their jobs. As President Hrabowski has said, at UMBC, “we belong to each other.”

So welcome to everyone just joining this wonderful work-in-progress we call UMBC! This is our time to be together, so let’s make the most of it.
by Craig Berger

UMBC's nationally recognized Student Government Association is looking for students interested in making a difference on campus and beyond.

If you're looking to get more involved on campus, the SGA Senate and Finance Board are looking to fill some vacancies. The Senate is looking to fill two empty Senate seats, while both the Senate and the Finance Board are searching for a secretary for the 2013-2014 Academic Year.

The Senate is SGA’s engine for collecting ideas from students and turning them into campus change initiatives. Members meet weekly (Mondays at 5:30 p.m.) to discuss and develop initiatives, talk with campus administrators and take positions on issues. But most of the Senate’s work takes place between the weekly meetings. Members spend time talking with students, representing all undergraduates on university committees, meeting in project working groups and doing the follow-up needed to get initiatives off the ground.

The Finance Board is the branch of SGA that provides funds to support student organization activities: $230,000 this year. Most of the Finance Board’s work is done at weekly meetings, where student organization leaders present requests and Finance Board members ask questions and make decisions. These meetings, which take place Tuesdays starting at 5:30 p.m., can be both long and intense. Finance Board members have to wrestle with complex issues: applying university policies, striking a balance between supporting amazing events and stretching funds across the entire year, thinking about the precedent-setting impact of their decisions. But they have a lot of fun too, partly because it’s so interactive and engaging.

The deadline to apply for these positions is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 9th.

You can submit your application at:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1FFXejhMfMDe0OfslDOVcP9ZwAqdiNfNHhp_q7ttAflA/viewform

Have questions?

Contact Jack Neumeier regarding Senate positions (neujack1@umbc.edu).
Contact Sara Kim regarding the Finance Board Secretary position (ak15050@umbc.edu).

Come to the Student Organization Space on the 2nd floor of The Commons between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. each day for this semester's Shark Week-themed event, filled with game-playing arranged by members of The Gaming Club, a massage therapist (Thursday, the 16th, from 11-1) and an acupuncturist (TBD) from University Health Services, and free snacks and t-shirts.

In addition to the conventional Stress Free Zone in the Student Organization Space, there will be two opportunities to relieve your stress by hanging out with some dogs:

On May 15, from 11-2, the Gender and Women's Studies Department and SGA are sponsoring a Puppy Picnic on The Quad, where you can stop and get a bite to eat and play with some puppies.

On May 16, also from 11-2, some pooches from Karma Dogs will visit UMBC thanks to the work of the UMBC Counseling Center, Active Minds, and SGA.
