UMBC-isms

    by David Hoffman and Craig Berger

    Last month we published a list of Maryland-isms, which generated some great conversation about things that are perfectly normal in Maryland but almost nowhere else (which you might not have known if you had lived in Maryland all your life). Now let's apply the same treatment to UMBC.

    We all know that UMBC has been named the #1 up-and-coming national university by U.S. News & World Report four years running. And there's the quirkiness of having a champion chess team (and Cricket Club and Mini Baja team) but no football team. But what else makes UMBC, UMBC?

    Here are a few examples to get us started. At universities other than UMBC, it would be very unusual to find ...

one of the most popular organizations on campus has the motto "Survive as a human. Hunt as a zombie."

a tradition of not scheduling any classes during three "free hours" each week to ensure that students have time to connect and student organizations to meet;

a heavily-used building has been left with no name, just a number, for more than 30 years (we're looking at you, Academic IV);

a 24/7 study space has been created because students insisted that they wanted to spend more time more comfortably immersed in academics;

a campus internet portal (MyUMBC) serves as both an information source and a meeting ground for students to share news, talk about issues and even initiate action for change;

the SGA is nationally recognized as "a model for governments at every level to learn from" because it serves so effectively as a catalyst for students' contributions to campus life;

so many examples of a deep and inclusive commitment to innovation in teaching and in contributing to our communities and democracy;

so many free t-shirts, and so many students so eager to get one;

a post about squirrels has become one of the most "pawpular" campus social media posts of all time;

the university President has been recognized as one of the planet's most influential leaders, yet you've probably seen him around campus, and if he has met you he remembers your name and where you went to high school.

    Do you agree? What else belongs on this list?

The Second (Honors Lounge) and Third Floor of the Library are also places I like to go when I have a little down time. There are always free food events on campus, from departmental events to (seb)-sponsored events (Breakfast & Bingo, Free Wings, etc.). A little known fact about UMBC that I discovered through my Science 100 class is that the UMBC campus contains four arms of the Herbert Run--all which join in the southern border of the campus. There is also a .6 mile interactive trail, named CERA, by the Research Park.

Two Fall Semester Leadership/Social Change Classes

    by David Hoffman

    If you're interested in building your skills as a leader and agent of positive social change ... well, you've chosen the right university, because there are plenty of opportunities. I'm going to highlight just two of many fall courses that may appeal to you.

    Civic Agency & Social Entrepreneurship (AMST 205/POLI 205/SOCY 205)

    Instructors: David Hoffman and Craig Berger (your Co-Create UMBC authors), Delana Gregg
3 credits
TuTh 11:30-12:45

    Students in this interactive course will explore ideas and examples illuminating the process of social change. You will also work in groups to develop practical projects to create change at UMBC or in the wider community. Projects developed by students in previous semesters have included creating a basketball league for homeless men in Baltimore, putting up fiberglass Retriever statues around campus with designs reflecting UMBC's values and diversity (you'll see these next fall), setting up new applied research opportunities for UMBC undergraduates, developing new health and wellness resources for UMBC students, installing hydration stations to discourage bottled water use on campus (the first of these was installed in the Retriever Learning Center), and expanding campus food options (spotlighted in the current issue of The Retriever Weekly). Getting a real project off the ground can be challenging work, but the payoff is that you will develop the confidence and perspective you need to succeed as an agent of change.

Just like in previous semesters, we plan to engage exciting guests to help you build your skills and hone your ideas. Last fall’s lineup included UMBC Provost Phillip Rous, Vice President for Student Affairs Nancy Young, SGA President Kaylesh Ramu, MyUMBC architect Collier Jones, Communications Manager Dinah Winnick, Coordinator for Leadership Development and Education Virginia Byrne, UMBC Training Centers Chief Operating Officer Gib Mason, and professor Lee Boot.

If you have questions about this course, feel free to email me (David Hoffman, dhoffman@umbc.edu).

    Foundations of Leadership Development (EDUC 216/PSYC 216)

    Instructors: Virginia Byrne and Lee Calizo
3 credits
W 4:30-7:00

    This course is designed to help develop effective, ethical leaders. As UMBC student you can interact with and influence other UMBC students on a daily basis. This course is designed to help you to develop as a leader and to prepare you to have a positive influence on others at UMBC and throughout your life. Through experiential projects and theoretical readings, this course will provide a foundation for your leadership development.

Example of how this course differs from other courses:

1) Class participation focused: Leadership is an inherently relational process. Within this course, you will share the responsibility to create a dynamic learning environment in which you will have the opportunity to understand, acquire, practice, reflect, and apply leadership knowledge, skills, and values. Each member of the class will be an expert in his or her own personal experience and how that experience informs and shapes the meaning made from course readings.

2) Many right answers about leadership: You will not leave this class with a 12 step plan for becoming a superhero, but you will practice skills that will help you make a difference in your community and improve your relationships.

3) No PowerPoint presentations. At all.

    If you have questions about this course, email Virginia Byrne: vbyrne@umbc.edu. Find Virginia on Twitter at @WeLeadUMBC and on myUMBC at http://my.umbc.edu/groups/lc.

Scientists Prove UMBC Squirrels Unusually Intelligent

          by David Hoffman and Craig Berger

          In a multi-year study with profound implications for the fields of evolutionary biology, genetics and psychology, a team of UMBC scientists has determined that squirrels living on the university's Baltimore County campus possess extraordinary intelligence and motor skills. The findings, to be published simultaneously in Nature and Modern Rodent, include evidence that UMBC squirrels are capable of communicating and remembering complex messages, making and executing plans, completing arithmetic calculations, and anticipating the movements of UMBC's human population.

          In one remarkable episode, two of the study's authors observed 18 squirrels crouching together near a campus eatery. When one squirrel raised a front paw and blinked, the others immediately fanned out and launched a raid that netted 2.6 pounds of pastry, french fries and other discarded foodstuffs. A message was later found scrawled in the dirt where the squirrels had been crouching: "Meat heer at nun." The scientists were unable to determine the message's source.

          "Everyone at UMBC knows that you walk out of Chick-fil-A at lunchtime at your own peril," observed Dr. Kyra Milgram, a biologist and the research team's leader. "We had heard rumors of organized squirrel activity for years. But the specific inspiration for this study came from an informal faculty meeting at Starbucks. Colleagues sitting near a window swore they saw two squirrels playing catch with a Chick-fil-A nugget. One professor claimed to have heard chirping that sounded exactly like Cee Lo Green's 'Forget You,' which is really shocking when you realize that the song was not even popular yet."

          The research team conducted extensive observations of squirrels at other universities in the region and found no evidence of elevated intelligence. Meanwhile, UMBC's squirrels have been seen moving pieces of trash in what the scientists have concluded are essentially elaborate games of chess. But the campus appears to have no squirrel football team.

The Good Stuff

    How many times have you had a goal in mind but were discouraged or pushed away by some of the risks or uncomfortable tasks you'd need to confront in pursuit of that goal?

    A post I read this weekend made a point of how often many of us concentrate on "the good parts" of the dreams and accomplishments we pursue while fearing, regretting, or simply turning away from their less attractive, more threatening components.

    The author produced three examples in his post:

    1.) "I want to be an actress, but I don't want to go on auditions..."

    2.) "I want to play varsity sports, but I need to be sure I'm going to make the team."

    3.) "It's important to sell this great new service, but I'm not willing to deal with rejection."

This framework formed much of the rationalization for my procrastination habits in college: "It's important for me to finish my homework at a reasonable time, but I don't want to miss out on something fun happening with my friends." I wanted to feel on top of my academics. I also wanted professors to read my work and be impressed by my thoughts and my writing. I wanted to do exceptionally well. But because I was afraid of fully investing my energy in pursuit of that, and knowing that it was possible that other people were having fun and I wasn't a part of it, I lowered my standards and expectations. A B was okay; after all, if I had actually tried, I know I could have gotten the A.

The larger point this author makes is that if we took the element of risk away--if the good stuff was guaranteed to us--it would diminish our achievements. Being on the wrong side of the risks from time to time reminds us that we are engaged in reality, not a Utopian fantasy, and that the work we do is valuable and not just passing time.

    How about you? What are some of your largest goals or important pursuits in your life? What are the risks associated with chasing them?
