Though I volunteer with OCSS, it really gives me an opportunity to interact with new people and also sets up a base-plate of my involvement here at UMBC. But it also gives me an opportunity to make a difference in the campus community.
No matter how big or small the difference can be, if we can help one person, we can have the potential to help millions.

A: One of the memorable things I've experienced at UMBC is being part of STRiVE, a week long Winter Retreat where we've not only improve our leadership skills, but also awaken our potential to make a difference in our community. Throughout the experience, I've met so many people that I'll keep in touch and work with and discovered many strengths I can share to everyone as well as drawbacks that I can improve upon.

Before I started college, I've been active in numerous clubs and organizations. Those including National Honors Society, Liberty High Drama Club, SkillsUSA, and St. Joseph Youth Band. It's important to me that I strive to continue to become involved at UMBC and also to continue to be a positive influence in my community as I have in High School. However, it is also imperative to maintain my grades in College. While being active and involved is important, it's also important to maintain good academic standing. A challenge I decided to take upon myself is to find and maintain a good balance in life. Maintaining good standings while at the same time continue to be involved.

STRiVE is a retreat I'll never forget. It gave me hindsight of my true potential and see how I can make a difference here at UMBC. STRiVE was something that gave me a reason to continue to work hard throughout my career, never settling less than my very best.

A: There's one word I've always carried with me throughout my high school and now college career. "Inspiritu."It means "to breathe life into, to inspire." I knew a great friend of mine who passed away recently that carried this throughout her life. Her name is Kate McAfee. She was an inspiriting person that loved to act and perform on stage and also influenced a lot of people with her positive attitude before her passing. Not once have I seen her say or do anything negative to someone. Her genuine personality touched and saved the lives of many. After her passing, everyone mourned the loss but everyone also remembered her legacy that she left behind, to inspire.

This is something I've carried with me after her passing. To me, her legacy of "inspritu" has helped shaped and redefined my purpose for living and also been deeply involved in what I actively do. I'm sure that she's looking after all of those who were touched by her and making sure that one of us, if not many, would carry out what she left behind. To continue to inspire and influence the lives of many.

The Best Laid Plans

    by Craig Berger

By the time I began my sophomore year in college, I had the next several decades of my life planned. My love for all things politics would carry me through my coursework, whisk me away to study in Washington, D.C. in the fall of 2004--perfectly timed with the presidential election--and then plop me down into a prestigious campaign management or applied politics graduate program. I'd learn how to craft campaign plans and messages, make some good money, and drink lots of coffee.

While I wasn't necessarily "carried" through my coursework, I did find it interesting. I was in a course on Congress that semester, and it was absolutely my favorite class. To make the next step in my plan, I needed to navigate two large steps: first, I needed to get permission from Allegheny College to study away from campus the following fall, and once that permission was obtained, I needed American University's program to admit me. Since this was what I had planned, and because I know what's best for me, I just knew it would work itself out. I wasn't worried.

I should have been. It turns out that so many people had also planned to study away from Allegheny--many in D.C.--that the competition was much higher than I anticipated. The envelope I opened was paper thin; there were no pamphlets about living in D.C., or about American's program. Just a form letter denying my application, reminding me how many students apply to study away from Allegheny each year, and how few applications the Study Abroad office is able to accept. It was a punch in the gut. I was mad. I was hurt. I was confused. Didn't they understand? I loved politics; I had to do this. They were taking a ticket to D.C. that was mine.

I'm not sure when I moved forward from those thoughts. It certainly took several weeks, maybe months. But I'm glad I did. Similar to David's post a few days ago, one opportunity led to another. I intensified my involvement in student government. When an RA position in my building became available at the end of the fall, I applied for it and was hired. With the help of these two commitments, I made a realization--"politics" wasn't something that was exclusive to the context of a presidential election or beholden to the national or state levels. Politics happened everyday, everywhere. Increasingly understanding that I didn't have to be restricted to working in D.C. or on political campaigns to get my political fix, I thought about what else I might enjoy. Luckily, I looked into this field called "student affairs" that my student government advisor kept telling me about.

Looking back, I can't help but laugh when I think about constructing such a grand, ambitious plan and ignoring the possibility that any obstacle might complicate it. I also can't believe that I was so beholden to this plan during that time, especially when I hadn't really taken the time to understand how it fit with what I really wanted out of life. After struggling with these questions, I gradually navigated myself into a great job and into a field in which I am constantly thinking and talking about politics, while also staying true to my authentic self.

Have you ever had your own "rock-solid" plans that ended up working out differently than you expected? What were they?

Five elected positions in SGA have become available: three positions in the Senate and two positions on the Finance Board. In addition, the Finance Board is looking for a Secretary to take minutes at its meetings. All of these positions, with terms running through May 15, 2012, will be filled through an application and interview process. To apply for the Senate vacancies, apply here. To apply for any of the Finance Board positions, apply here. Applications for both the Senate vacancies and Finance Board vacancies are due this Friday, February 1 at 5:00 p.m. The students selected will have a chance to gain valuable experience before applications to run for positions in the 2013-2014 SGA are due in March.

The Senate is SGA’s engine for collecting ideas from students and turning them into campus change initiatives. Members meet weekly (Mondays at 5:30 p.m.) to discuss and develop initiatives, talk with campus administrators and take positions on issues. But most of the Senate’s work takes place between the weekly meetings. Members spend time talking with students, representing all undergraduates on university committees, meeting in project working groups and doing the follow-up needed to get initiatives off the ground.

The Finance Board is the branch of SGA that provides funds to support student organization activities: $200,000 this year. Most of the Finance Board’s work is done at weekly meetings, where student organization leaders present requests and Finance Board members ask questions and make decisions. These meetings, which take place Tuesdays starting at 5:30 p.m., can be both long and intense. Finance Board members have to wrestle with complex issues: applying university policies, striking a balance between supporting amazing events and stretching funds across the entire year, thinking about the precedent-setting impact of their decisions. But they have a lot of fun too, partly because it’s so interactive and engaging.

If you have any questions about the Senate vacancies, contact Valerie Parks at parksva1@umbc.edu. If you have questions about the Finance Board vacancies, contact Samantha Spehr at sspehr1@umbc.edu.

The Butterfly Effect

If NBA Hall of Famer Reggie Miller had decided to live on campus for his senior year of college, every detail of my life today would be different.

    I kid you not.

Miller had a spot reserved in one of UCLA’s residential suites that year, but he got an off-campus apartment just before school started. If he hadn’t, his departure would not have freed up a spot in that suite for me. (When I arrived with my belongings after the first week of school, my suite-mates were disappointed to discover they would not be living with a basketball star after all).

If I had not moved into that suite, I would not have become friends with my roommate Lloyd. And he would not have managed my campaign for Student Body President the following spring, almost single-handedly swinging the election my way. And if I had not won the election, I would not have felt inspired and empowered to apply to Harvard’s graduate program in Public Policy that fall.

If I had not entered the Public Policy program, I would not have met my friend Richard. So I would not have joined him six years later at a small Boston-based nonprofit running community organizing projects in cities around the United States. And I would not have been in Pittsburgh on organization business one December to meet the woman I would eventually marry. And we would never have moved to Maryland together. And I would not now be working at UMBC.

I suppose you could conclude that life is a crapshoot, full of circumstances beyond our control. But I prefer to see it a little differently: that in the push and tug of events, there are openings through which you can pass to new worlds. And in those worlds you can discover and fulfill the promise of your self; and find the path with your real name on it.

Maybe there’s just such an opening for you, in the circumstances of your life, right at this moment.

Do you have a similar story of your own—of a circumstance beyond your control that made all the difference?
