    <span>by David Hoffman and Craig Berger</span><br><span><br></span><span>When UMBC opened in 1966, the campus consisted of a few brick buildings and dirt paths. The first students, faculty and staff members complained about having to walk through dust and mud, but the absence of sidewalks was by design. Campus planners wanted to see where people walked before paving the paths. UMBC's pioneers literally blazed new trails with their feet, a process that has been repeated in every subsequent generation (most recently with a short path connecting The Commons and Biology buildings to the existing network of paths approaching the AOK Library).</span><br><span><br></span><span>Those winding and diagonal campus trails are a good metaphor for the spirit of everyday democracy is deeply embedded in the culture of our UMBC community. If you're just arriving at UMBC, prepare to co-create! All of us make this community together. Here we recognize and value each other as complex human beings, each with stories of our own, each of us integral to the whole. In the next few years, UMBC will grow and change in part because of what the freshmen, new transfer students, and new faculty and staff will contribute. Together, all of us will make something new, something our own, and in doing so we will embody and extend UMBC's best traditions.</span><br><span><br></span><span>We want to introduce a few online resources for people at UMBC who want to make the most of their time here by getting involved as co-creators of their communities, on campus and beyond.</span><br><span><br></span><span><a href="http://cocreateumbc.blogspot.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><strong>Co-Create UMBC</strong></a> is the blog we write to support UMBC's co-creators, in part by making the UMBC community visible to itself. <div><span><br></span></div>
    <div><span><span><span>A: </span></span>I enjoy all of the fascinating, thoughtful and passionate people I get to work with. Mostly I work with graduate students who have completed Peace Corps service and are continuing service, their professional development as social change leaders, and earning Masters degrees at UMBC. But I also get to work with undergraduate students who are curious about international development. I work with students with intellectual disabilities who are pursuing their own life goals. I intersect with really motivated and caring staff across campus. And I get to touch so many promising projects with innovative, heart-driven community leaders like Lakeland Elementary Middle School and Overcoming Poverty Together, an international microfinance organization collaborating with UMBC.</span></div>
    </div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>

    <strong><span>Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?</span></strong><br><span><span><br></span><span>A: </span>I will quote my mother, Lois Shutt, here. "College is not about what you learn. It's about who you become."</span><br><span><br></span><span><strong><span>Q: </span><span><span>What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?</span></span></strong></span>
    </div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>
    <div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span><span><span><br></span></span><span><span>A: </span></span>Recently I have been involved in developing a partnership between One Main Financial, UMBC and Overcoming Poverty Together, a local organization in Baltimore which supports microlending to women entrepreneurs in Indonesia. It's such a cool project! One Main was interested in giving UMBC students the chance to learn about microfinance. Through other work at the Shriver Center, we discovered that one of our local partners was involved in microlending in Indonesia. We were able to pull together professors from Global Studies, Women Studies and Entrepreneurship, local microlending experts in our community and a university funder to provide real loans that make a real difference for real women working to improve their lives. Once our student group is in place, there will be a triple impact: students learn, women in the global community thrive, and the university gets to be part of creating a better world and improving lives in the global community.</span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>

    <div>
    <div><span><br></span></div>
    <span><span><span>A: </span></span>My favorite little hidden gem of UMBC is the CERA trail (althought I can only find it 50% of the times that I go looking for it. Seriously, that thing is like the Room of Requirement.). Moments into that trail, you forget that you are on a suburban campus. I like sneaking away to it during the Fall when the campus explodes in color.</span>

    <div><span><br></span></div>
    <div><span><span><span>A: </span></span>I have a lot to look forward to. Being a learner puts you in the position of having the most to gain. The best part about being a full time student is that certain point at the end of the semester when I get to pick new classes that I've been so curious about. It's like shopping!</span></div>

    <div><strong><span>Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?</span></strong></div>
    <span><span><span><br></span><span>A: </span></span>Going into college, I wanted to learn how to write. I used to think being an elaborate and eloquent writer was what made "good writing," so that's what I tried for. In my very first semester, my English 100 professor shot me down. The A's I was waiting for were...not A's. Sometimes I would shake it off with the thought that the professor just didn't understand the point I was trying to make (but with a lot more sass). Isn't that a bit ridiculous? How could I possibly not care about what my sole audience thought? It's kind of like talking to yourself. Pointless. I found that there was no sense in trying to write in some fancy, cluttered way that no one could understand or would want to follow. The most important thing I learned at UMBC was that sometimes less is more.</span><br><div>

I think part of the reason is that UMBC is a place full of opportunity and a place I have felt empowered to take on any career track I choose. Among my younger friends in my church community, I try to be an encouragement. People need to feel empowered and I try to remind them that they are.</span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>

    <span><span><span><br></span><span>A: </span></span>When I entered UMBC, I was unsure of what career I wanted to pursue. However, after having the experiences of various positions, diverse classes, and learning from the experiences of others, I have learned more about my strengths, my areas of opportunity, and that I wish to pursue a career as a senior manager of a healthcare organization.</span><br><div>

    <div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span><span><span><br></span></span><span><span>A: </span></span>During my time at UMBC, I have been involved with a variety of clubs and organizations (academic/departmental, cultural/ethnic, governance, religion/spirituality, service/social action), have volunteered with three different community service programs offered by the Shriver Center (College Gardens, Success, EBLO), have had exposure performing different types of research (was a research assistant for two psychology labs, am currently the research assistant at the Center for Women in Technology office), and a diverse academic background (also studied Pre-Med). I have had the honor of working for different departments at UMBC: tutor at Student Support Services, tutor at Learning Resources Center, tutor at Academic Center for Student Athletes, Phonathoner at Alumni Relations, office assistant at the University Health Services, and Career Peer Advisor at the Career Services Center. I spent a few months working at a marketing firm in the UMBC Research Park. I had clinical medicine internships, an internship with Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services, and I currently work as a Corporate Compliance Intern for Maxim Healthcare Services. Through these experiences, I have had the opportunity to help others live healthier, happier, and more successful lives. I have often assisted faculty, staff, and other students with development, outreach, and marketing. Through my efforts, I have increased awareness and utilization of resources, awareness of campus news, engagement in opportunities, event attendance, professional development, leadership development, and academic success.</span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>

    <span><span><span>A: </span></span>I highly encourage other students to take advantage of the plethora of resources and opportunities. I recommend that students engage in jobs, internships, research experiences, leadership experiences, student organizations, workshops, and other opportunities. These experiences will help you develop skills, realize what you are interested in, enhance and realize your strengths, recognize and amend your areas of opportunity, improve your campus experience, and will be beneficial for future positions. The resources help with academic, professional, and personal success. As a graduating senior who will enroll in graduate school at UMBC next year, I would also like to invite any student to contact me if there is ever anything I can help with. Thank you for making my UMBC experience an unforgettable one! <span><br></span></span><br><span><br></span><span><br></span>

    <div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div>
    <div><span><br></span></div>
    <div><span><span><span>A: </span></span>I absolutely adore being a volunteer, because it is such a big part of who I am and it has brought me close to so many of my best friends. One of my favorite things about UMBC is how easy it is to step out of your comfort zone and lend a helping hand. In my time here, I've been able to volunteer with 5 different organizations- one of which I now lead- and I even got to go to Panama last spring break to provide medical care abroad. Being a conscientious member of the community is so important at UMBC and I think that's something that really binds students together and is one of the reasons we can make such an impact!</span></div>
    </div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>
    <div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span><br></span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>
    <div>
    <div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div>
    <div><strong><span>Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?</span></strong></div>
    <span><span><span><br></span><span>A: </span></span>The sooner you laugh at your mistakes, the better. We're all in college so it's only natural that we're going to make a big mess of things at least once...a month. I make a fool out of myself or find myself in a sticky situation much more often than I'd like to admit, but I've learned that the best way to deal with my mistakes is to realize I may have misstepped, go to the friends and family I've made on campus for help, and then try to move forward. I recommend laughing at some point in that process because it really does help to know that the importance of many situations lies in how you respond to them!</span><br><div>
    <strong><span><br></span></strong><span><strong><span>Q: </span><span><span>What is one way you have worked with others to make a positive difference at UMBC or in another community?</span></span></strong></span>
    </div>
    </div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>
    <div><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span><span><span><br></span></span><span><span>A: </span></span>So one of the best things about being a Tour Guide is that I get to work with people that are head over heels for UMBC, rain or shine. Sometimes it feels monotonous to give a tour each week and say the same thing every time, but every once in a while I'll talk to a student that really appreciates the tour experience they had when they were deciding on a school to attend. Actually, in the past year I've had a couple new students actually tell me that I was their tour guide last year and that I in some way affected their decision to come to UMBC. That feels amazing! I think it's a really cool way to leave an impact because by sharing why I love UMBC to prospective students I might actually be giving them a reason to fall in love with UMBC themselves.</span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>

    <div>
    <div><span><br></span></div>
    <span><span><span>A: </span></span>My mom actually got her Ph. D. at UMBC, and there's a copy kept on the fifth floor of the library. I really like studying on that floor because in a way being close to the culmination of all her hard work makes it easier to believe that I too can accomplish something great if I work hard enough and believe in myself. Also, it's in Molecular Biology so I hope to one day be able to read it AND understand it.</span><br><span><span><br></span></span>

    <span><span><span><br></span><span>A: </span></span>I have learned the importance of being independent and responsible, but also knowing that help is available. Coming to college is a big change, both in living away from home and school becoming more of a challenge. All students have to learn and be responsible for themselves, but at UMBC there is always help available. Resources from health needs to study needs are available to help us succeed and thrive in our college years.</span><br><div>

In the winter of 2013 I attended the retreat as a participant and it changed my perspectives and pointed me in the direction I wanted to go as a leader. I realized my strengths and that I really could make a difference. Going again as a coach gave me the opportunity to pass my knowledge, support, and experiences to fellow students so that they too can facilitate change on our campus and in the community as a whole.</span></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>

    <span><span><span>A: </span></span>Don't be afraid to branch out. You never know what kinds of connections you might make. My closest friends here were made through little details in housing, twins, and who happened to meet who at orientation and move-in day. Now I have lifelong friends and so many good memories. Join some clubs or study groups, attend campus events and sports events; there are so many awesome people here at UMBC you haven't met yet. Also, make time to have some fun. College is stressful and busy, but it will be so much better if you take time to be with friends, have some fun, and make some lasting memories.</span><br><span><span><br></span></span>
