A group of UMBC students in the College of Engineering and Information Technology participated in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Clean Snowmobile Challenge competition in Michigan earlier this month. During the shortened competition, the UMBC team took second place overall.
The 2019-2020 challenge culminated in a competition that was scheduled March 9-14, 2020 in Keweenaw Research Center at Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech). UMBC has participated in the competition since 2017.
During the competition, undergraduate engineering students reengineered an existing snowmobile to reduce emissions, and limit noise to be within acceptable environmental standards to drive within National Parks as a clean and quiet device. The teams compete with their modified snowmobiles in a variety of events including emissions, noise, fuel economy/endurance, acceleration, handling, oral presentations, cold start, and design.
UMBC’s team has already identified improvements that they will make next year and is looking forward to attending the Clean Snowmobile Challenge next year.
