Tenth Meeting: Mini debate & Thanksgiving send-off

<Tagline>After this Wednesday, meetings will resume on December 1st</Tagline>

Hey everyone!

We hope this message finds you well. Our tenth meeting will be this Wednesday (11/17) at 7 PM, in Public Policy (PUP) room 208 as always, with the caveat that the location can change depending on safety concerns. This week we'll have a discussion on how to improve education, most specifically regarding a) how to deal with Critical Race Theory, and b) how to stop free speech abuses on campus, along with the interaction of both of these topics! Also during this meeting will be some reflection on Change My Mind, Change My Mind's next topic for the Spring, future speakers, etc.

IMPORTANT NOTE: We will not have a meeting on the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving (the 24th of November), however meetings will resume on December 1st.

Change My Mind: Final reminder that Change My Mind is tomorrow, November 16th, from 10 AM to 2 PM in Erickson field off Center Road! We're looking at upwards of five volunteer speakers whose minds are to be changed, and we invite any passersby to have a discussion with one of our volunteers about the state of our great country.

Jury Nullification educational event: College Republicans will be hosting an educational event regarding Jury Nullification on December 1st, times still to be determined. We hope to have a table in the commons if possible, although location is also subject to change. More details as we get closer to this event!

College Republicans outing @ Round1 arcade: As suggested, some College Republicans will be going out to visit Round1 in Towson to have a fun time together! We recommend those who'd like to go bring about $50 for food and games and all else one might wish to do, such as Karaoke and Bowling. If you're concerned about being able to pay, email us as soon as possible and we might be able to help cover your costs. Funds limited. The event itself will be at the Towson location: 825 Dulaney Valley Rd, Towson, MD 21204, USA. This shall occur within the first week of December, however the exact date and time are subject to polling within our GroupMe. We'll announce those when we have those results!

T-shirts: No further news at present, but we'll update when we have more info!

As always, we encourage those who have not yet done so to follow our myUMBC page, join our Discord, and join our GroupMe, since we don’t use Webex Teams much.
Ninth Meeting: Event Planning

Hey everyone!

We hope this message finds you well. Our ninth meeting will be this Wednesday (11/10) at 7 PM, in Public Policy (PUP) room 208 as always, with the caveat that the location can change depending on safety concerns. This week we'll be discussing future events (such as a potential Jury Nullification educational event), and upcoming debate topics — with a twist. Per our Treasurer Chris Thoms' suggestion, the next string of debates will be solution-based debates, centered around issues such as gun rights, taxes, the media, immigration, infrastructure, and more. We want to hear what issues you'd like to debate the solutions to! We hope to plan out the last few debate topics of the Fall semester in this meeting, and perhaps some of Spring 2022's topics.

Change My Mind: We've now finalized the last few details on this event, and it will be happening on November 16th, from 10 AM to 2 PM in Erickson field off Center Road! We're looking at upwards of five volunteer speakers whose minds are to be changed, and we invite any passersby to have a discussion with one of our volunteers about the state of our great country. 20 special flyers for this event will be passed out this Wednesday's meeting, please come and take as many as you can and post them around campus!

Pre-event planning meeting: For those interested in volunteering for the Change My Mind event, we'll have a rolling meeting from 11 AM to 1 PM tomorrow, November 9th, in library room 373 to discuss potential counterpoints and debate subjects. Involved club officers and all other volunteers not able to attend, please stay after the end of Wednesday's general meeting for a brief rundown of this planning meeting.

T-shirts: We're still in the procurement process, but we will continue to keep those who requested their shirts up to date!

As always, we encourage those who have not yet done so to follow our myUMBC page, join our Discord, and join our GroupMe, since we don’t use Webex Teams much. Our eighth meeting will be this Wednesday (11/03) at 7 PM, in Public Policy (PUP) room 208 as always, with the caveat that the location can change depending on safety concerns. Tentatively, we're trying for the third week in November, with exact dates pending approval from UMBC, and the topic will be this: "America is a Great Country, Change My Mind". If you'd like to take part in this event and haven't been included already, feel free to send us an email!

Note: we are all out of t-shirt slots at this point and cannot accept any further requests. Those of you who got your requests in will receive your shirt during meetings later on throughout the semester as planned, and for those who didn’t get the chance, we hope to be able to give away more next semester!

As always, we encourage those who have not yet done so to follow our myUMBC page, join our Discord, and join our GroupMe (the latter is where we pick debate topics, and you too can have a say in future topics if you join!), since we don’t use Webex Teams much. After last week's debate-slash-speaker medley, this'll just be a chill session — and we'll be giving out flyers to put up for our club!

HUGE thank-you to Mia of the College Republicans for making this flyer for us! If it becomes popular enough, we hope to be able to host semi-regular cross-club debates within it — all depends on folks getting in there, & by all means send us feedback to improve the server too! If you're one of the first few in, @ the secretary with the server emote you'd like to add, within reason ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

https://discord.gg/vtFtqgnuwY

Change My Mind

Next order of business, we are currently in the planning stages of a Change My Mind outdoor event in front of the library, Steven Crowder-style — and we want you to participate! We plan to have several volunteers whose minds are to be changed covering different time slots, and the more volunteers we get, the longer the event can be! If you're interested in participating, please fill out this form with your time availabilities and topics you'd be comfortable discussing.
Sixth Meeting: Second "formal" debate (10/20)

<Tagline>Bring your ideas for future events!</Tagline>

Hey everyone!

We hope this message finds you well. Our sixth meeting will be this Wednesday (10/20) at 7 PM, in Public Policy (PUP) room 208 as always, with the caveat that the location can change depending on safety concerns. This week we planned the second formal debate on whether police should receive more oversight or more trust, however, as last week's meeting saw an impromptu discussion on policing in general and how to solve problems related to it, this debate's topic is plenty flexible once we've sat down in the room! We'll also have some discussion on future events people would like to see, such as potentially having an outdoor "change my mind"-style event!

In that same vein, today there will also be a rather small meeting with the College Republicans secretary, in the Commons' Fireside Lounge at 4 PM, to discuss the creation of flyers both for upcoming events and general flyers for our weekly meetings. Not many are coming, but feel free to stop by if you'd like to share your ideas!

Also, Fall Kickoff was last Saturday at Down's Park, and it was a rousing success! We heard from a lot of great speakers, including former Congressional Republican Nominee Kimberly Klacik, about how to be a more successful club and a more successful Party. You can see some pictures from the event here:

https://twitter.com/kimKBaltimore/status/1449740869314220034

Lastly, we wanted to make you aware of an upcoming event announced at Kickoff, a reading of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" hosted by the Baltimore City GOP. Baltimore City Republican Central Committee Member William Hellmann will be doing the reading and relating its themes back to current events, with optional Happy Hour afterward and a tour of Westminster Hall Graveyard if time permits. The event is on October 26th, 2021, 6:30-7:30 PM, at the gravesite of Edgar Allen Poe, 515 W Fayette St, Baltimore, MD 21201, with a $10 ticket price. More details here:

https://www.baltimorecitygop.org/masque_of_the_red

As always, we encourage those who have not yet done so to follow our myUMBC page and to join our GroupMe (the latter is where we pick debate topics, and you too can have a say in future topics if you join!), since we don’t use Webex Teams much. Direct links are below:

https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/collegerepublicans/posts/95564

That’s all from us — we hope to see you again soon!

Pelumi Akinpelu, President

o22@umbc.edu

Alex Lloyd, Secretary

alloyd2@umbc.edu

First Meeting and Meeting Schedule

<Tagline>Our meetings will be weekly on Wednesdays at 7pm!</Tagline>

Hey everyone!

As always, we hope you all are doing well and staying healthy. As determined by our poll, our first meeting will be tomorrow (Wednesday, 9/15) at 7pm! It will be in Public Policy (PUP) room 208, but the location is subject to change based on attendance to maintain safety. The backup locations are in the Public Policy atrium and directly outside the Public Policy building.

If you cannot attend this meeting time due to your schedule, do not worry! We will have many events planned throughout the semester, most notably the Maryland Federation of College Republicans’ Fall Kickoff (think outdoor/yard party with catering). Additionally, we’re in the works of holding short, informal discord meetings and discussions Mon/Wed/Fri at 12pm (during free hour).

As previously stated, during our first meeting, we will have a PIZZA PARTY! Also, we will discuss student elections for later in the term, do political compasses for those new to politics, plan the joint UMBC political discord (mentioned above), and discuss current events. If you plan on running and/or voting, you must attend our first meeting.

If you are a new member (and haven't done so already), I highly suggest giving out myUMBC page a follow and joining our GroupMe! We don't use Webex Teams much, so feel free to skip out on that. If you visited us during Involvement Fest, you should have received an invite link through your myUMBC.
