Winter To-Do List

<Tagline>10 Ways to Recharge for Spring 2020!</Tagline>

It’s finally here – Winter Break!

You worked hard this semester and it doesn’t go unrecognized. Now is the time to get some well-deserved rest and relaxation before the spring semester begins.

As you think about how you want to spend this time away from UMBC re-charging, and if binge-watching Netflix (and Disney+...and Hulu...and Xfinity...even Crunchyroll...) just won’t suffice, check out some of the suggestions below:

1. Catch up on Sleep

Did you pull more all-nighters this past semester than you would like to admit? Now is the time to re-establish some good sleeping habits.

2. Do some light brainstorming for next semester plans.

If you found yourself too overwhelmed and busy last semester, consider what activities you may need to let go of. On the other end, if you feel you had too much time on your hands, consider some clubs or activities you may be able to get involved in this spring.

3. Take time to reconnect with family and friends

Tell your friends you cherish them! Keep your support system strong and growing into the Spring semester. Spend some time with the elders in your family learning more about your family history and heritage. This discovery about your family roots can be the inspiration you need to keep pushing forward when the going gets tough.

4. Eat a good meal! Or two. Or three...

Take a break from your typical college diet and use this time to enjoy some healthy meals. And as a note for when you get back to campus, check out these easy healthy meals you can cook up right in your residential hall!

5. Take a day trip somewhere that you haven't been or spend an afternoon exploring your hometown, or you can volunteer in your local community.

The local food bank, animal shelter, or soup kitchen can all be great ways to spend time supporting the community. A quick Google search can help you find hundreds of ways to get involved this January.

If Maryland is home, here is a list of 100 day trips from Baltimore, and places to volunteer!

6. Visit a graduate or professional school.

Whether you are just starting to think about grad school or are actually working on applications, in-person visits are always informative.

7. Set up an informational interview with a working professional.

Find out what a profession is really like and make connections with people in your future field by conducting an interview unrelated to a job search. Sample question: “What are the most important qualities for an aspiring pilot/engineer/dance therapist?” Shadowing can help you determine if a profession is really for you! Keep a journal to record notes from these experiences.

8. Update and upgrade your resume.

Opportunities sometimes come up quickly and you want to be ready with that polished resume. Every college student needs a polished resume!

9. Plan an independent research or creative project and prepare an application for the UMBC Undergraduate Research Award (URA).

The URA provides up to $1500 to support research expenses such as equipment, travel, and materials. Applications are due no later than May 1, 2020. Here is a link to the full details.

Summer internships can provide both $ and valuable experience. The more competitive internships have deadlines in fall, but some are still open in January-March. If you have already missed a deadline, get all the information so you can apply early next year. Some internships are open to recent college graduates.

10. Work on your graduation game plan.

Winter break is an excellent time to create, revise or update your plan. Here are suggestions for a pathway you can take for graduation, and it includes a worksheet to start the plans on! Don’t forget to refer to your degree audit on myUMBC!

Read more about this here.

The Doctor is In

<Tagline>Cures for the Common Sophomore Slump</Tagline>

Just when you think you’ve got it all figured out, your sophomore
year of college can be one of heightened uncertainty and lower motivation, as
many students start to second guess choices and paths that were chosen during
their first year. In fact, this time frame has a name – The Sophomore Slump.

Fear not, this is a very normal experience for a lot of students!

If you currently find yourself in the midst of the slump, we’ve
laid out some ideas for how to cure any “symptoms” you might be
          experiencing.

COUNTERING THE SLUMP SYMPTOMS

Social Symptoms may include no longer feeling
that “click” with some friends made in freshman year or feeling like you don’t
quite belong in a certain friend group.

Solutions:  It’s okay to gradually move away from the friends you no
longer feel close to and create situations in which you will naturally meet new
people. Start trying to form connections with other students in your classes,
in your residence hall, or even in a student org you’ve recently joined.

Academic Symptoms may include lack of motivation to
attend class and study, sometimes accompanied by second guessing the major you
          are pursuing.

Solutions:  Find some ways to bring novelty and excitement to your
academic life.  Change study groups, start using electronic flashcards and
study tools (See Study Stack, for example), make a
point of speaking in class, etc. And start planning now to take something
really intriguing or outside your comfort zone during Winter session. (Winter
2020 registration in now live and you do not need registration clearance!) With
respect to the major, talk to your academic advisor, visit the Career Center to take an interest
inventory, and network with students in majors that appeal to you.

Life Direction Symptoms may include guilt about the cost
of college given your indecision about the future, or general boredom
alternating with feeling overwhelmed and anxious.

Solutions:  Plan some very positive next steps!  Plan to study abroad. Plan an internship in a field
related to your current major or a potential major.  And sign up for new
recreational and extracurricular activities like intramural sports, taking up a
musical instrument, or joining new clubs or campus organizations.

GENERALLY SPEAKING

Sophomore slump tendencies are a reflection of your “middle child”
status on campus—no longer new and not yet in the big leagues of academic work.
You are no longer eligible for the extra attention given to freshmen, but you
are starting to take some challenging upper level courses along with juniors
          and perhaps even seniors.

The solution to the malaise of sophomore-hood is almost always
          action. This
would be action to make changes in social habit patterns, action to try new
courses, join new organizations, and plan new enriching activities. Sometimes
the action you need to take is to collect additional information – about majors
and careers, about internships and study abroad programs. Less stewing
and more motion will help you beat the slump and stay on course toward
          graduation and all around success.

Is Graduate/Professional School in your Future?

<Tagline>Three Considerations for Beginning the Application Process</Tagline>

The prospect of graduate or professional school is an exciting one!

As you begin the process of exploring programs of interest, and preparing to submit applications, here are three main points to keep in mind:

Take time to find the right program fit!

When possible, visit the schools/programs that interest you. You’ll have the opportunity to see how the campus is laid out and learn about the surrounding area. Is it in close proximity to things you enjoy? What are the housing options like? What do the labs, studios and/or classroom facilities that you would be learning in look like? Overall, does it seem like the type of environment you will like to spend time in?

You’ll also have the chance to connect with program directors, faculty and current graduate students. You’ll want to consider whether or not the program has a professor who shares your research areas of interest. And meeting current students is especially important if your program will use a “cohort” model – meaning you will work with the same people throughout the duration of the program.

Finally, take time to research class options – some programs will provide more flexible schedule options including evening, weekend or online classes, while other programs may be more traditional and have classes throughout the day.

Graduate programs might require an entrance exam

The majority of graduate and professional programs will require you to complete an entrance exam, similar to taking the SAT or ACT when applying to UMBC. See below for which exam you might be expected to take:

Letters of Recommendation – ask early and ask people who know you best!

Most applications to graduate or professional school will require you to submit letters of recommendation. Your recommenders should be individuals who know you well, such as a professor who taught you in several courses or serves as your research mentor.

Ideally, you’ll set up a meeting to ask for a recommendation face-to-face, which will help emphasize how important the letter is to you and give you the chance to provide context and answer questions your prospective recommender might have.

Allow at least two months prior to the deadline to give your recommenders enough time to complete the recommendation.

See below for some other helpful links as you continue to prepare for your next steps!

Transfer Student Connections

  <Tagline>Links to Helpful Resources</Tagline>

Welcome to RetrieverNation!
As a transfer student, you bring tremendous collegiate experience with
you, and we know this experience will serve you well as you continue your
studies at UMBC. We hope that you will
extend beyond your classroom experience and explore all that UMBC has to offer.
Below, we have highlighted just a few resources to assist you in your
transition and help you make the most of your honors university experience.

Off-Campus
    Student Services (OCSS)

OCSS coordinates the Transfer Student Network (TSN).  TSN
hosts events throughout the semester and is a great place to connect with other
transfer students.  The OCSS staff are great resources for helping you get
involved in leadership roles across campus!

Academic Engagement and
    Transition Programs

AETP is a great office to connect with if you want to
ensure that you are on an Academic Pathway that works
for you, or are trying to figure out a plan to make the most of your
UMBC experience. AETP staff members enjoy hearing transfer students’
individual stories and learning about their goals and priorities. If you
are a first-year transfer student, you may want to consider taking a Transfer Student
Seminar (TRS) designed to assist in your transition to the UMBC
    Community.

Academic Success Center

Through a coordinated approach and an unwavering commitment
to student success, the Academic Success Center fosters a welcoming environment
that provides a one-stop opportunity through Academic Policy, Academic
Resources, and Academic Advocacy for students to achieve their academic goals
and claim their future with a UMBC degree.

Undergraduate
    Research/Prestigious Scholarships

If you would like to get involved with undergraduate
research or want to learn more about prestigious scholarships such as the
Rhodes, Truman, and Marshall scholarships, stop by the Office of
    Undergraduate Research. Workshops are
available to all students who need getting started with their
    research.

Career Center

The Career Center is the place to go if you would like to
connect with internship opportunities (many of which connect to our
70,000-strong global alumni community). The Career Center can assist you in
putting together or refining your resume to start your internship search. They
can also help you find an on-campus job, a summer position, or a permanent job
    after graduation.

Shriver Center

The Shriver Center can connect you with Service Learning
experiences throughout the Baltimore area. Volunteering is an important way to
give back but also can be a great achievement to highlight on a resume.

THREE HELPFUL TIPS

1. Start connecting with UMBC faculty, staff, and fellow
    students.  Create your UMBC network.

2. Think about how you can build on the activities and
experiences you participated in at your previous institution.

3. Be open to fellow students who want to connect and
network with you to learn about your experiences.

BONUS INFORMATION

If you have completed 15 or more credits at a community
college and have not completed your Associate’s degree, we encourage you to

Connect with your Professors!

Written by OAPA Peer Advisor, Jenika Brown

Stressed over your grade, or that oh-so
important GPA? You know who’s great at alleviating that stress…your professors.
It’s easy to forget that the person teaching in front of the class has been
through some variation of what you’re going through right now as a college
student. Your professors make the best study partners and are some of the best
relationships you could leave college with. Get to know your professor and
allow them to get to know you. All you have to do is connect. Want to know how?

How to Connect:

Set-up a Meeting

Utilize your
Professor’s office hours! The sole purpose of these hours are to help you
outside of class. Whether it be an assignment you’re confused about or a simple
check-in on your progress in the class, you’d be surprised at the kind of
insight you can gain from a one-on-one session.

Our
busy schedules as students don’t always allow for an in-person meeting…that’s
why we have technology! Corresponding through email, is better than no
correspondence at all. Anything you would ask in an in-person meeting can be
          translated to email.

          *Helpful tip: A lot of
professors are willing to set-up meetings with you on days, and at times, outside
of their listed hours to better accommodate you. Some professors with inflexible
hours, are willing to have meetings via phone call. Just take the initiative to
          ask.

When to Connect:

Don’t
wait until your struggling in a course to set up a meeting. Connect early in
          the semester!

When
emailing, try to stay within the frame of typical business hours or their
office hours if possible—you may get a faster reply this way.

After You Connect:

Follow
up with your professor after your sessions. Whether it be assurance that you
are implementing their advice correctly—or to simply say thank you—following up
with your professor shows you care and makes the relationship one of
          reciprocity.

Network:

Attend
departmental events or other campus events your professors promote in class to
establish a relationship that surpasses the classroom, as well as discover new
          interests.

Choosing a Major

<Tagline>Perspective from an OAPA Peer Advisor - Irene Thomas</Tagline>

College is
a time for self-discovery and personal growth. Part of that self-discovery
comes from deciding what you see yourself doing in the future, which isn’t
always easy. You may think “But that’s so far away," “I’m too young to be
thinking about that”- although that may be true, having an idea of what you see
yourself doing in the future will help you be as academically successful as you
          can be here at UMBC.

Consider
these “Do’s” and “Don’ts” for choosing a major:

“DO’s” for
          Choosing a Major:

Get
to know all the majors available at UMBC.

Some
major fields may be completely unfamiliar because they were not taught in high
school. Interdisciplinary Studies (the “build your own major” major), Health
Administration and Policy, Geography and Environmental Systems, and Business
Technology Administration are interesting major’s students may not have been
aware of prior to arriving at UMBC. There’s no harm looking through the list-
you never know what you might find!

Educate
          yourself on potential majors.

It’s
a good idea to talk to a friend or advisor about the major you’re interested
in, so that you can get a better understanding of the potential courses and
path you may want to pursue in your selected major. Doing research on your own
          is highly recommended, as well.

List
5-8 possibilities based on your interests and aptitudes.

Take
courses that are steered towards potential majors you have chosen. Read the
entire catalog sections, all the course descriptions, faculty bios, and any
other information about these majors available on the Department websites.

“DON’Ts”
          for Choosing a Major:

Don’t
let anyone else choose your major for you.

Your
parents, friends, and siblings all have ideas about what you should major in,
but it is very important to make your own individual choice. You are the
student and you are making the decision that could affect the rest of your
          life.

Don’t
assume that a college major will necessarily lead directly to a specific type
          of job.

The
skills acquired from college are of a general nature that can be applied to
many different professional settings. The workforce is full of people whose
undergraduate majors bear only an indirect relationship to the positions they
          hold.

Don’t
stick with a major when it is clear that you are performing poorly in the
          required courses.

If
you notice your grades are low in your major, this is an indication that it is
not appropriate for you. Consider other options in which you can be more successful!

  <Tagline>Prepare for Your Advising Meeting</Tagline>

    with your academic advisor.

Your advisor
is a vital member of your support team at UMBC. Often your advisor is a
professor in your major department, but could also be a professional
(full-time) advisor.  If you have any doubt at all about WHO your advisor
is, below is a link to the department contacts for all
majors. The person listed as “advising coordinator” or “advising contact”
can help you find out who your advisor is, or assign you an advisor.

We encourage you to
schedule an appointment with your advisor as early as
possible. In order to register for Spring 2020 classes, your advisor must

Four Simple Steps to Apply for Graduation

The end is in sight! If you've earned 90 or more academic credits, you received a message from the Registrar's Office informing you that you are eligible to apply for graduation.

However, eligibility is only the start of the graduation application process. Below are four simple steps you can take now to ensure that you’ll soon be shaking hands with Dr. Hrabowski as you receive your UMBC diploma.

Note: Even if you do not plan to attend the commencement ceremony, you still need to apply to graduate in order to earn your degree.

Step 1: Apply for Graduation!

Sunday, September 15th is the last day undergraduates can apply for December Graduation.

Only those students who have every single requirement needed for degree completion on their fall semester schedules will be permitted to participate in the Commencement ceremony.

If you are taking a course at another institution that you plan to transfer, you must have an approved Verification of Transferability form on file with the Registrar’s Office and be prepared to submit a copy of your schedule.

Step 2: Embrace your degree audit!

Your degree audit indicates your progress toward degree completion. If you see “unsatisfied” items, these are requirements that appear to be missing and need to be addressed immediately. Your degree audit is located on myUMBC, under the guide link “Advising and Student Support.”

Make sure any substitutions or waivers of major requirements are documented in your degree audit; you may need to submit a Help/RT ticket to the Registrar’s Office to add these notations to your record.

Step 3: Wrap up any outstanding details ASAP!

If you have Advanced Placement or CLEP scores, transfer transcripts, foreign language waivers, or other items you need to provide to UMBC, delay no longer! If the major, minor, or certificate program on your record is out of date, or if you have additional majors or minors that you need to remove, submit a new Declaration of Major form. Any of these items could prevent you from being able to graduate.

Step 4: Let the celebration begin!

Participating in the commencement ceremony and other celebratory activities on campus is the culmination of all of your hard work. Take time to recognize all it took to get you to this moment and be proud of your accomplishments!

Finally, use this link to check your Honors eligibility, which will be recognized at the ceremony and on your diploma.

Make Big Waves this Summer with Self-Reflection

<Tagline>Questions and tips to help you re-focus for the year ahead</Tagline>

The summer is a great time to reflect back on the academic year and re-focus on what’s ahead.

This doesn’t have to be a formal process. It also should not cause you to feel anxious or overwhelmed at what might have gone wrong. Instead, look at this time of reflection as a learning opportunity, and a chance to better grasp how your time at UMBC is growing and shaping you.

So while you’re soaking up the sun this summer, here are some topics to reflect on:

Academically, what kind of year did I have?

What were my successes and what were my challenges?

Did I complete as many credits and courses as I had planned?

Was there a particular class that gave me a new perspective?

Tip: Review your class schedule for fall semester and make sure it still makes sense given the academic year you just completed (i.e.- do you need to repeat a class? Are you enrolled in too many credits?).

Tip: Consider taking summer courses as a way to catch-up or get ahead. Summer registration is still open and doesn’t require advising clearance. Remember, Finish 15 to stay on track!

What was my social/extra-curricular involvement like?

Did I get involved on or off-campus in activities/events that interest me?

How well did I balance my social and academic life?

What lessons did I learn from getting involved?

Tip: It’s never too late to get involved. If you are looking for opportunities on campus, be sure to check out the Student Involvement Festival early in the fall semester. In the meantime, feel free to explore the list of campus organizations here.

What is my current satisfaction and confidence level with my academic major?

What aspects of my major am I enjoying and what uncertainties do I still have?

How does what I'm studying impact my future career goals?

If you are still undecided or are considering changing your major: what steps can I take to make progress towards a decision?

Tip: If you are still exploring career options related to your academic major, spend time this summer talking to people who have careers that interest you.

Tip: Check out the self-exploration resources online via UMBC’s Career Center
