Our Goal: codeConnects is an initiative that aims to empower middle and high school students who are traditionally underrepresented in the field of computer science, including women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, those from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and rural communities.
What We're Doing: codeConnects is an online platform that offers one-on-one computer science instruction and mentorship to underrepresented middle and high school students. Pairing each student with a professional software engineer or university student majoring in computer science, students participate in weekly, face-to-face coding lessons using our platforms’ collaborative editing and video chat features. Through personalized, year-long lessons, students will develop in-depth knowledge of CS skills and relationships with mentors, cultivate individualized passions, and gain confidence through personal encouragement.
To make this a reality, we need YOUR help. We're calling on all software engineers, coding professionals, and university students majoring in computer science to commit to volunteering 1 hour a week for the school year to teach coding to a middle or high school student.
***Important facts about teaching***
- you get to teach from the comfort of your own home or workplace (since lessons are over videochat)
- you set your own schedule and determine when you're free to teach anytime during the week or weekend
- while we will provide a curriculum guide, you are free to teach whatever language/area of focus you would like
Please fill out the form below to indicate your potential interest in participating as a mentor. This form is not binding; we are seeking to understand how much interest there is. We are planning to launch Spring 2018, so after completing the form, watch for email updates. Please also share this form with anyone you think may be interested!
Who We Are: The Coding School (TCS) is a 501c3 organization dedicated to empowering the next generation through computer science education. Founded by a Brown undergrad in 2014, The Coding School team consists of over 400 computer science students and software engineers from 75 universities and 30 companies from across the US who are passionate about teaching the next generation the power of computer science. Through educational enrichment classes, we have taught over 3,000 K-8 students how to code, 44% of which are from underprivileged communities, at 16 schools in Los Angeles and Sacramento. TCS is currently being considered by the NSF for a grant to conduct research on Coding and Early Education. We are proudly partnered with University of Southern California’s STEM Consortium; USC Viterbi School of Engineering; UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and the recipient of Brown University's Social Innovation Grant.
We are also proud to announce the newest members joining our advising team: Eva Manolis, co-founder of Shutterfly; Jessica McKellar, founder of Pilot and former director of engineering at Dropbox, and Pamit Surana, managing director at Alvarez & Marsal and former managing director of Accenture. We are so excited to have these individuals guiding us and helping us make the greatest impact possible.
