  <Title>UMBC Alumnus helps develop Apple&#8217;s latest technology</Title>

    	If you were among the millions who bought the new iPhone 4S, then you can thank Dr. Harry Chen, the UMBC alumnus who helped develop the phone’s most notable new feature: <a href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/siri.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Siri</a>.</p>
    <p>For those not among the millions, here’s a bit of background:  Siri is a virtual assistant that responds to voice commands. “She” can do things like make phone calls, send text messages, set alarms, and find directions. But, the remarkable thing about Siri is that she understands intent. Tell Siri “I’m drunk,” and she’ll bring up a list of cab services in the area. Tell Siri “I want a burger” and she’ll direct you to burger joints nearby, according to ratings.   </p>
    <p>Before Siri was bought by <a href="http://www.apple.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Apple</a>, it was a small startup company operating out of Silicon Valley. Born out of a research project of SRI International, the company functioned under the moniker “stealth-company.com” until they were ready to disclose what they were working on, says Chen, who joined the team when he was offered a job by Adam Cheyer, one of the company’s initial founders.  </p>
    <p>The offer came at an ideal moment, after Chen and his wife had decided to start fresh on the West Coast. “We just packed and started looking for jobs,” says Chen who knew that Silicon Valley was the sort of culture he wanted to be in<strong>.</strong> But, when they made the move in 2008, he had no idea that he would end up contributing to one of the world’s most revolutionary technologies. “It has been a rollercoaster ride for me the past three years,” he says.</p>
    <p>It’s no surprise that at UMBC, Chen studied artificial intelligence. He was a founding member of the <a href="http://ebiquity.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Ebiquity</a> group, named for its focus on Ubiquitous Computing—the idea that computing devices will seamlessly blend into our environment and enhance our everyday activity. While pursuing a Ph.D. in Computer Science at UMBC, Chen wrote his dissertation on intelligent rooms—rooms with the potential to collect information about their environment to share with different smart devices.</p>
    <p>As a Graduate Student, Chen worked as a Research Assistant under <a href="http://www.cs.umbc.edu/people/faculty/tim-finin/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Dr. Tim Finin</a>. The position gave him the opportunity to meet other researchers in his field of study–like Cheyer, the man who would eventually offer him a place at Siri. Chen credits Dr. Tim Finin with pushing him forward: “Without him, I would probably not arrive where I am today.”</p>
    <p>Today, Chen is a Siri Engineer at Apple and he loves it. “Apple is a very different company,” says Chen, who explains that the company runs more like a start-up than a big corporation. He couldn’t be happier with his decision to switch coasts. He sees Silicon Valley as the center of technological progress. “Reputable companies like Google, Facebook, Apple, Yahoo, Netflix, LinkedIn and Oracle are only a short drive from each other,” he says, “Cool new technologies tend to emerge within the Bay Area and then later spread throughout the world.”</p>
    <p>Chen compares the evolution of Siri to a parent watching his child grow up. Though, it isn’t done growing–Chen predicts that the application will continue to improve. Siri is bound to become a model for the future of technology. Everyone—especially children and the elderly–will benefit by being able to interact with a computer just as they would a person: through speech. At least, so says Chen: “The natural evolution is natural language.”</p>

    <strong><span>Interested in women’s issues, social justice, and working to affect community and campus-wide change? Consider joining the Women's Center staff as an intern for a unique personal and professional development opportunity right here on campus. <br></span></strong><span><span><span><br>IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN AN INTERNSHIP</span></span><br>Please come to the Women’s Center and talk with one of our associates.<br><br></span><p><span>Students completing internships at the Women’s Center work an average of 8 hours per week during the academic semester. The spring 2012 internship will begin in January and go through May.</span></p>
    <br><p><span>Women's Center interns are an integral part of<br>the Women's Center staff, contributing to the Center’s mission of <em>“assisting all women in achieving their full potential in education, career and personal life through academic and intellectual growth, professional development and personal empowerment.”</em></span></p>
    <br><p><span>This internship may look differently from year to year depending on the intern involved because the Women’s Center strives to maximize on the current intern’s interests and strengths. While we are able to offer some flexibility, all interested intern applicants should work within the parameters of the description below:</span></p>
    <br><p><strong><span>UMBC Women’s Center Programming, Outreach &amp; Activism<br>Internship</span></strong></p>
    <br><p><strong><span>Programming:</span></strong></p>
    <p><span><span>·<span><br></span></span></span><span>Organize a program or<br>series on a topic affecting women and/or marginalized groups. Potential programs can be flexible to meet your interests and your academic program’s needs.</span></p>
    <ul><ul><li><span>Some ideas include: Women’s<br>physical/mental health; Sexual education; LGBTQ issues; International women’s<br>issues; Leadership development; Body image; Sex-trafficking; Feminization<br>of poverty; Intersectionality; Media portrayals of women and girls.</span></li></ul></ul>
    <p><span><span>·<span><br></span></span></span><span>In addition to a program<br>of interest, interns will be responsible for helping the Women’s Center staff<br>with programming related to 1) Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April) and 2) the Center’s 20<sup>th</sup> Anniversary Celebration. Related responsibilities<br>include but are not limited to:</span></p>

    <p>Cyber attacks committed against IT networks and services have profound impact both on ongoing mission and future missions, whose operations are based on these networks and services. The attacks, by exploiting the vulnerabilities of the software assets can push their impact through Cyber Terrain – a dependency network of structural, spatial, functional and other domain-specific dependencies that exist among software assets and services, and reach the missions. In this presentation we will introduce a novel approach of assessing impact of cyber attacks on missions (business process) and describe the basic models and algorithms of the approach.</p>
    <p>Dr. <a href="http://www.altusystems.com/jakobson.html" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Gabriel Jakobson</a> is the VP and Chief Scientist at <a href="http://www.altusystems.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Altusys Corp.</a>, a consulting firm specializing in the development of intelligent situation management technologies for defence and cyber security applications. During his more than 20 years tenure at Verizon he had increasing responsibilities of leading advanced database, expert systems, artificial intelligence, and telecommunication network management programs. He has authored (and co-authored) more than 100 technical papers and is principal author of 5 US patents in situation management and event correlation. He received PhD degree in Computer Science from the Institute of Cybernetics, Estonia. Dr. Jakobson holds the honorary degree of Doctor Honorius Causa from the Tallinn Technical University, Estonia, and is Distinguished IEEE Lecturer. Dr. Jakobson is the member of the Board of Governors of IEEE Communications Society, Director, IEEE ComSoc North America Region, co-chair of the Tactical Communications and Operations Technical Committee of IEEE ComSoc, chair of the IEEE ComSoc Sub-Committee on Situation Management.</p>

    Center work an average of 8 hours per week during the academic semester. The

    <p><span>Women's Center interns are an integral part of
    the Women's Center staff, contributing to the Center’s mission of <em>“assisting all women in achieving their full
    potential in education, career and personal life through academic and
    intellectual growth, professional development and personal empowerment.”</em></span></p>
    
    <p><span>This internship may look differently from year
    to year depending on the intern involved because the Women’s Center strives to
    maximize on the current intern’s interests and strengths. While we are able to
    offer some flexibility, all interested intern applicants should work within the
    parameters of the description below:</span></p>
    
    <p><strong><span>UMBC Women’s Center Programming, Outreach &amp; Activism
    Internship </span></strong></p>
    
    <p><strong><span>Programming: </span></strong></p>

    </span></span></span><span>Organize a program or
    series on a topic affecting women and/or marginalized groups. Potential programs
    can be flexible to meet your interests and your academic program’s needs. </span></p>
    
    <ul><ul><li><span>Some ideas include: Women’s
          physical/mental health; Sexual education; LGBTQ issues; International women’s
          issues; Leadership development; Body image; Sex-trafficking; Feminization
          of poverty; Intersectionality; Media portrayals of women and girls. </span></li></ul></ul>

    </span></span></span><span>In addition to a program
    of interest, interns will be responsible for helping the Women’s Center staff
    with programming related to 1) Sexual Assault Awareness Month (April) and 2)
    the Center’s 20<sup>th</sup> Anniversary Celebration. Related responsibilities

          Month: helping to manage the Clothesline Project; organizing partnership

    <Title>Researcher of the Week: Reema Sharma</Title>

          <strong>When and how did you find out that you could do independent research work as a UMBC undergraduate?</strong><br>UMBC is a school that is very much focused on advancing undergraduate research. Therefore by enrolling at UMBC, I knew I would have an excellent opportunity to do hands-on research and be able to work on a project of my own. Also, as a Meyerhoff Scholar, I was encouraged to find a lab of my interest.<br><br><strong>How did you find a mentor and decide on a project? How did you know this was the project you wanted to do?</strong><br>I knew I wanted to look for a lab on campus since it would allow more time for me to do research. I started by browsing through the research profiles of professors on the UMBC Biology and Chemistry Department websites and contacting the ones whose research seemed appealing to me. I kept my options open and talked to several professors in each department. Eventually, I decided to work with Dr. Lindahl since I had never worked in a lab that focused on the genetic aspects of an organism and wanted explore research areas that I was not familiar with. We worked together to find a project that was suitable for me.<br><br><strong>What academic background did you have before you started on this research?</strong><br>Before joining my current lab, I had the opportunity to work in two different labs focused on two different areas of research. So I had a basic understanding of lab technique and environment. As for the course load, I had taken basic courses required for a Biochemistry major. During my sophomore year (the year I joined my lab), I took Genetics and Cell Biology both of which were very useful in understanding my research project. However, having said that, I don't think anyone should be discouraged or intimidated from working in a lab just because they believe they will not be able to understand the information. With time and enough literary research, anyone can understand the concept behind a research project and, in some cases, even help you study for your current or future classes.<br><br><strong>What is your advice to other students?</strong><br>I would advise others to look for a lab that not only interests them research wise but also creates a comfortable environment for them to work in. It is important to have the freedom to ask as many questions as necessary to gain a better understanding of your project and the best way to achieve this is to have mentors who encourage your curiosity. Support from your mentor combined with genuine effort on your part can make research a very enjoyable experience. Also, time management is necessary as well as flexibility in your lab work. Working in a lab, especially during the school year, can be difficult because of time limitations. Therefore, looking into how you will incorporate lab work into your schedule is helpful. I found working in a lab on campus to be more convenient as it allowed more time for me to do research instead of commuting.<br><br><strong>What are your career goals?</strong><br>I plan to pursue an MD/PhD after graduation.
