Happy Lunar New Year!

  <Tagline>2024: Year of the Dragon</Tagline>

Also known as the Spring Festival (春节) / Chinese New Year (新年) in China, Tết in Vietnam, and Seollal (설날) in Korea, Lunar New Year celebrates the start of the new year on the lunisolar calendar, observed through a range of traditions extending over several days. Beginning on Saturday, February 10th, 2024 and celebrated for multiple days, this meaningful and significant holiday is considered one of the most important holidays across cultures. Businesses, schools, and government offices are closed during this time across the world in observance of Lunar New Year. A time for familial gathering and engaging in longstanding traditions. For individuals celebrating the Lunar New Year spiritually, these festive days hold significance, honoring ancestors and those departed through various ritual celebrations.

During this festive period, family, friends, and loved ones come together to prepare traditional and customary dishes, each carrying symbolic meaning. Foods like Tangyuan (sweet rice balls, China), Tteokguk (rice cake soup, Korea), and Banh Chung (square glutinous rice cake, Vietnam) embody cherished values and beliefs such as family unity, longevity, and reverence for the Earth.

In addition to observing the lunisolar calendar, each year is designated by a specific Zodiac animal. The significance and symbolism linked to each Zodiac animal differ across various cultures due to their distinct beliefs and customs. In 2024, it is recognized as the Year of the Dragon, a highly auspicious zodiac sign representing qualities like cleverness, charm, and even wealth. Different cultures may associate various types of dragons with the zodiac belief. According to the Chinese zodiac, 2024 is designated as the year of the Wood Dragon, while for those observing Seollal, it is considered the year of the Blue Dragon, or gabjinnyeon (갑진년).

    Research Employers Beforehand. We
are breaking records by having the LARGEST number of employers to date at this

do your homework beforehand. Download the Career Fair Directory,
make note of employers of interest, and plan your route in advance. You can

    For International Students:
this year we've included a page in the directory listing employers hiring
international students. Be sure to check that out on page 6!

    Dress the Part. Your outfit
for the Career Fair should not be an afterthought. Plan a wardrobe that aims to
impress by selecting business casual or even business formal attire. Some ideas
include: dress pants and shirts, suits, dresses, blazers, and jackets. Pick
colors and patterns that show your personality but are also professional. Make
sure what your wearing is comfortable too, as you'll be walking around the RAC.
Give yourself room to breathe by not wearing something too form fitting, and
comfortable footwear should be considered too.

Have Your Resume Ready. List your contact information,
accomplishments, skills, and experience. Need a little help with your resume?
No problem! We have some tips and samples
here, as well as hold live drop-in hours
at the Center. Once your resume is good to go, be sure to print out around
15-20 copies and keep them in a folder or padfolio for you to carry around, and
bring them with you to the fair. You may also want to bring pens, extra paper,
and a place to hold onto business cards.

    Perfect Your Pitch. So
you've done your research, you look professional, and you have your resumes on
hand. Now it's time to know what you're going to say to employers once you walk
up to their booths. This is where your 30-second commercial, or elevator pitch
comes in. For your pitch, you should let employers know who you are, highlight
a few accomplishments, and how you'd bring value to their organization. You can
practice your pitch using Big Interview, where
you can practice answering the "Tell me about yourself" prompt.

By taking these tips and recommendations into consideration,
you should have everything you need to make the most out of the Spring Career
& Internship Fair. Best of luck out there, and we'll see you at the Career
    Fair soon!

We present results from the 2024 UMBC Scholarship for Service (SFS) Research Study, which analyzed the effectiveness of the anonymization method UMBC's Division of Information Technology (DoIT) uses to protect user privacy when releasing campus network data in support of UMBC research projects. DoIT applies a pseudonymization technique, which replaces unique identifiers (e.g., IP addresses) with unrelated pseudonyms. We demonstrate a chosen-plaintext attack that completely re-identifies the anonymized dataset. First, using a Scapy Python library, we craft custom packets containing identifiable tags within the header data, and we transmit these packets to every node on the UMBC network. Second, we observe the resulting anonymized data produced by DoIT. With knowledge of the intended packet destinations, we generate a one-to-one mapping from our crafted packets into the anonymized captured network traffic. We offer technical and policy-based recommendations for improving DoIT's anonymization method.

The goal of Computer Vision, as coined by Marr, is to develop algorithms to answer "What are", "Where at", "When from" visual appearance. The speaker, among others, recognizes the importance of studying underlying entities and relations beyond visual appearance, following an Active Perception paradigm. This talk will present the speaker's efforts over the last decade, ranging from 1) reasoning beyond appearance for vision and language tasks (VQA, captioning, T2I, etc.), and addressing their evaluation misalignment, through 2) reasoning about implicit properties, to 3) their roles in a Robotic visual concept learning framework. The talk will also feature the Active Perception Group (APG)'s projects addressing emerging challenges of the nation in automated mobility and intelligent transportation domains, at the ASU School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence (SCAI).

Yezhou (YZ) Yang is an Associate Professor and a Fulton Entrepreneurial Professor in the School of Computing and Augmented Intelligence (SCAI) at Arizona State University. He founded and directs the ASU Active Perception Group, and currently serves as the topic lead (situation awareness) at the Institute of Automated Mobility, Arizona Commerce Authority. He is also a thrust lead (AVAI) at Advanced Communications Technologies (ACT, a Science and Technology Center under the New Economy Initiative, Arizona). His work includes exploring visual primitives and representation learning in visual (and language) understanding, grounding them by natural language and high-level reasoning over the primitives for intelligent systems, secure/robust AI, and V&L model evaluation alignment. Yang is a recipient of the Qualcomm Innovation Fellowship 2011, the NSF CAREER award 2018, and the Amazon AWS Machine Learning Research Award 2019. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland at College Park, and B.E. from Zhejiang University, China. He is a co- founder of ARGOS Vision Inc, an ASU spin-off company.

    Name: Netty Lichtman

Pronouns: he/they

Semester of Internship: Fall 2023

Major: Social Work

Current Class Level: Senior

This semester I completed a(n)...: Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization Name): Baltimore County Public Schools, Woodmoor Elementary School

Location of the Organization (City, State): Lochearn, Maryland

Title of position: School Social Work Intern

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:
I provide social work services and supports to elementary schoolers. These are both universal supports to the entire elementary school and individualized supports for students with social-emotional developmental delays. A typical day for me is a mix of crisis support, generalist services like the food bank or the social-emotional curriculum, networking with our community partners to bring services to the school, and having the silliest conversations all with the students' needs in mind.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?
This is my Field Placement with the BSW program. I was recommended for this placement by my social work advisor, and the applications were through the program as well as through the BCPS social work processes.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?
BSW Program

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?
I love working with kids and being able to be there for them when it can often feel like the systems are working against them. We were all kids at one point, and although looking back it may not seem like it, it truly is a challenging part of our lives. I enjoy being able to help them through that process.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?
I know I am making a tangible impact on these kids' lives. Seeing them reaching their goals and being able to make friends, express their feelings and needs, and improve their overall well-being, it is super meaningful to me.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?
I would highly recommend going for it. Even if you are not sure that it will be applicable to your field, trust me, it will be. The skills you will obtain just through going through the process and then showing up are helpful in whatever professional field. Go for it!

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

Just showing up makes a bigger difference than you could imagine.
