Abstract: DNS Tunneling is a method of encoding information into DNS queries and responses to enable communications between a client and a server. Open source proof of concept examples include Iodine (Schouten) and DNSCat ("iagox86/dnscat2"). Malware can use DNS Tunneling for Command and Control as in recent cases such as DNS Anchor (Dahan) and Saitama (Stockley). Complicating matters are DNS Blocklists which follow or in some cases don't follow RFC 5782 ("RFC 5782 - DNS Blacklists and Whitelists") but are used for generally benign use cases. As a potential vector for C2 and exfiltration, DNS tunneling is important for enterprises and the security industry to detect and counter. There is extensive literature using pattern matching, cache misses, and machine learning to detect DNS tunnels.

Infoblox's previous work in this field included "Behavior Analysis based DNS Tunneling Detection and Classification with Big Data Technologies" (Yu, et al.). In this talk, we describe new work emphasizing a reduction in false positives. To achieve this, we introduce several new features, including using the autoencoder reconstruction loss of a DNS query which to our knowledge has not been used in the literature. We do an in-depth analysis of feature importance, show that several features in previous models were redundant, and show the newly added features improve decision performance. We also show that using DNS Block lists as a proxy for a labeled dataset can pick up additional tunnels such as DNSCat and Iodine.

Smart assistive environments adapt to the needs and preferences of disabled or elderly users who need help with the activities of daily living. However, the needs and requests of users vary greatly, both due to personal preferences and type of disability. As handcrafting an environment is prohibitively expensive, in recent years significant research was done in systems that use machine learning to create a predictive model of the user. Machine learning, however, typically requires large amounts of data. A stand-alone smart environment, however, only has access to the data collected from its user since it was deployed. A possible solution is to perform centralized, cloud-based learning by pooling the training data collected from multiple users. However, uploading data collected from the personal habits of elderly and disabled users creates significant security and privacy concerns.

In this talk, we investigate the type of data sharing necessary for learning user models in smart environments and propose several novel considerations. We point out that data sharing is only ethical if the user derives a benefit from it. This implies that the decision to share data must be periodically revisited, it is not a commitment extending indefinitely in the future. We study the data sharing decisions made by users under several machine learning frameworks: local, cloud, and federated learning. We show that most users only benefit from data sharing for a limited interval after the deployment of the system. We also investigate machine learning techniques that predict whether the user will benefit from sharing the data before the data is shared.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

For students seeking an internship or a similar valuable experience, there are several key pieces of advice that can greatly enhance your chances of success. First and foremost, networking strategically is crucial. Attend industry events, career fairs, and workshops to connect with professionals in your desired field. Utilize platforms like LinkedIn to foster meaningful connections and stay informed about potential openings.

Skill improvement should be a consistent priority. Stay updated with the latest tools and technologies relevant to your field through online courses, tutorials, and workshops. Put your skills into practice by working on personal projects or participating in online competitions. These not only demonstrate your practical abilities but also highlight your initiative and dedication to self-improvement.

Crafting a strong resume and profile is essential. Tailor your resume to emphasize skills, experiences, and achievements pertinent to the position you're aiming for. Similarly, curate a professional LinkedIn profile that showcases your strengths and experiences, making it easier for recruiters to discover your potential.

Research thoroughly before applying to companies or organizations. Customize your applications to reflect your understanding of their values, goals, and how you can contribute. Leverage career services provided by your educational institution for guidance on finding internships, improving your resume, and honing your interview skills.

Speaking of interviews, practice is key. Prepare by rehearsing common interview questions and developing concise yet impactful responses. During interviews, emphasize your enthusiasm, adaptability, and problem-solving capabilities to leave a lasting impression.

Persistence and patience are essential virtues during your search. The process can be competitive and time-consuming, so stay persistent and maintain a positive attitude even in the face of rejections. Each interaction and application is an opportunity for growth and learning.

Ultimately, internships and similar experiences are not just about showcasing your skills; they're about learning, adapting, and growing as a professional. By strategically networking, continuously improving your skills, engaging in projects, optimizing your resume and profile, researching opportunities, refining interview skills, and maintaining a resilient outlook, you'll be well-equipped to embark on a successful journey towards securing a meaningful internship.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

Amidst the journey of securing an internship, I realized that the true essence lies in the ceaseless commitment to personal growth. Every endeavor is a canvas on which you paint your progress, never ceasing to transform into the best version of yourself.

Meet Garrett Hill, a FOUR-TIME URA Scholar!

Garrett attended Mount Hebron High School in Howard County, where he had the opportunity to participate in the Biotechnology Career Academy at the Applications and Research Laboratory (ARL) program and conduct research at UMBC during his senior year at Hebron. He is a senior Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major, a Meyerhoff Scholar, and conducts research in the Marten lab.

Research Title: Characterization of the PrkA Protein Kinase in Aspergillus nidulans

Describe your project:

My project aims to investigate the way that mold repairs its cell wall after damage and how the cell organizes structures related to this repair. New understandings gained through this research can contribute to how we use fungi to make drugs and enzymes and may even help others to design new antifungal medications.

Who is your mentor for your project?

I work with Dr. Mark R. Marten in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering. As a high school senior, I was a part of a program that allowed me to participate in research at neighboring institutions, and I came across Dr. Marten and his lab when searching for research I may be interested in. After meeting and talking about the work done in the lab, something that stood out to me was how Dr. Marten stressed the importance of project ownership. Being the “expert” in the lab on a project gives students a unique level of both responsibility and drive, and this is what drew me to joining his lab.

How did you become interested in this project?

Before starting work on this project, I had assisted some graduate students with their projects, and that’s when I learned that I had an interest in both the molecular genetics and the fluorescence microscopy that we do in our lab. This project seemed to combine both interests, so I decided to choose it when looking for a project of my own.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

Something that really took getting used to was the number of setbacks I faced in my project. I quickly learned that in research, it takes many tries to get something right, and failure became much more familiar to me throughout my journey as an undergraduate researcher.

What has been the most rewarding part?

I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to engage in research at almost every stage a projects life. I started with comprehensive literature reviews, where I then formulated my own hypotheses, and under the guidance of my mentor, I designed experiments to test these hypotheses. I also got experience communicating my science in conferences and presentations, allowing me to get a great view of what research really feels like.

How will you disseminate your research?

I plan to present my research next spring at URCAD and look forward to the prospect of attending conferences to potentially present my work.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

I think getting involved in research can seem a little daunting at first, so I would recommend that people just take the leap! There is a lot of exciting research being done at UMBC, so I would say to just see what’s out there and if something seems interesting, reach out to the lab to see if you can get involved. Now is the time to experiment and see what you want to do in your career, and there are many mentors here that could help you on that journey.

What are your career goals?

After graduating UMBC, I plan to pursue a PhD in microbiology. The prospect of staying in academia and becoming a mentor for others is exciting to me, but I also look forward to exploring what other career paths I might be able to follow after graduate school.
