Richard Forno appointed Honorary International Professor

CSEE's Dr. Richard Forno, principal lecturer and cybersecuity graduate program director, was recently appointed an Honorary International Professor at the Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Hidalgo (UAEH), one of Mexico's older universities, in recognition of his accomplishments in both the cybersecurity industry and now in academia. Dr. Forno joins a small group of distinguished faculty from around the world now associated with the university.

The appointment coincided with the university's annual international Book Fair, a prominent 2-week event with key activities aligned around a single theme - in this case, cybersecurity. During his brief visit to UAEH last week, he held several seminars with students and research faculty and also conducted a talk about the 2022 book 'Cybersecurity and Local Government' (co-authored with Professor Emeritus Don Norris and Ph.D. student Laura Mateczun, both from UMBC's Public Policy.)

His investiture as an Honorary International Professor took place during a solemn and tradition-laden ceremony in one of the oldest structures in Pachuca. There, his formal talk was on the need for interdisciplinarity in cybersecurity where he also used the idea of the 'hacker mindset' to stress the importance of rediscovering the spirit of critical inquiry both to enhance cybersecurity and society at large.

Dr. Forno emphasized that effectively addressing cybersecurity issues requires an understanding of things far beyond the computing and technology domains. He noted that the best hackers and cybersecurity professionals "don't simply accept technology, systems, policies, or processes at face-value - we want to know more, and so we ask difficult questions from a variety of perspectives."

He concluded by challenging students and faculty to "think broadly about the world and how you approach technology and its many risks. Ask questions. Build and (responsibly) break things. Never settle for the default configuration. Take calculated risks, acknowledge uncertainty and the possibility of failure - and learn from those experiences."

Dr. Forno looks forward to identifying and pursuing opportunities for collaboration in education and research in cybersecurity (and other areas of mutual interest) between UAEH and UMBC.

Undergraduate Researcher of the Week: Garrett Hill

<Tagline>Four-peat URA Scholar Studies Drug Design Using Fungi</Tagline>

Meet Garrett Hill, a FOUR-TIME URA Scholar!

Garrett attended Mount Hebron High School in Howard County, where he had the opportunity to participate in the Biotechnology Career Academy at the Applications and Research Laboratory (ARL) program and conduct research at UMBC during his senior year at Hebron. He is a senior Biochemistry and Molecular Biology major, a Meyerhoff Scholar, and conducts research in the Marten lab.

Research Title: Characterization of the PrkA Protein Kinase in Aspergillus nidulans

Describe your project:

My project aims to investigate the way that mold repairs its cell wall after damage and how the cell organizes structures related to this repair. New understandings gained through this research can contribute to how we use fungi to make drugs and enzymes and may even help others to design new antifungal medications.

Who is your mentor for your project?

I work with Dr. Mark R. Marten in the Department of Chemical, Biochemical, and Environmental Engineering. As a high school senior, I was a part of a program that allowed me to participate in research at neighboring institutions, and I came across Dr. Marten and his lab when searching for research I may be interested in. After meeting and talking about the work done in the lab, something that stood out to me was how Dr. Marten stressed the importance of project ownership. Being the “expert” in the lab on a project gives students a unique level of both responsibility and drive, and this is what drew me to joining his lab.

How did you become interested in this project?

Before starting work on this project, I had assisted some graduate students with their projects, and that’s when I learned that I had an interest in both the molecular genetics and the fluorescence microscopy that we do in our lab. This project seemed to combine both interests, so I decided to choose it when looking for a project of my own.

What has been the hardest part about your research/what was the most unexpected thing about being a researcher?

Something that really took getting used to was the number of setbacks I faced in my project. I quickly learned that in research, it takes many tries to get something right, and failure became much more familiar to me throughout my journey as an undergraduate researcher.

What has been the most rewarding part?

I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to engage in research at almost every stage a projects life. I started with comprehensive literature reviews, where I then formulated my own hypotheses, and under the guidance of my mentor, I designed experiments to test these hypotheses. I also got experience communicating my science in conferences and presentations, allowing me to get a great view of what research really feels like.

How will you disseminate your research?

I plan to present my research next spring at URCAD and look forward to the prospect of attending conferences to potentially present my work.

What is your advice to other students about getting involved in research?

I think getting involved in research can seem a little daunting at first, so I would recommend that people just take the leap! There is a lot of exciting research being done at UMBC, so I would say to just see what’s out there and if something seems interesting, reach out to the lab to see if you can get involved. Now is the time to experiment and see what you want to do in your career, and there are many mentors here that could help you on that journey.

What are your career goals?

After graduating UMBC, I plan to pursue a PhD in microbiology. The prospect of staying in academia and becoming a mentor for others is exciting to me, but I also look forward to exploring what other career paths I might be able to follow after graduate school.

This semester I completed a(n)...: Internship

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site (Company/Organization Name): Academic Engagement and Transition Programs (AETP), UMBC

Location of the Organization (City, State): Baltimore, Maryland

Title of position: General Associate (Graduate Summer Intern)

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities:

As an intern within the Academic Engagement and Transition Programs (AETP) at UMBC, I had the privilege of undertaking a wide variety of responsibilities that were focused on enhancing the academic and transitional experiences of the incoming freshman class for Fall 2023. Working closely with the Program Coordinator, my active contribution to co-leading the Dawg Days: Jumpstart (Summer Bridge program) gave me an opportunity to guide a cohort comprising of more than 60 new students through a six-week journey consisting of rigorous academic coursework, invaluable career exploration sessions, fostering community building exercises, and engaging in enriching service-learning opportunities. On a weekly basis, my esteemed colleague and I were presented with new and exciting challenges as we embarked on the creation of innovative workshops designed to facilitate the academic transition of students. In addition to these endeavors, we also organized impactful co-curricular events, including social gatherings, field trips, and service-learning programs. The overarching goal of these initiatives was to foster personal growth and make a positive impact on the UMBC community.

Additionally, we made it our priority to establish an inclusive study hall environment within our university's library to ensure students felt supported throughout their individual educational journeys. I collaborated with faculty from various disciplines to coordinate class activities and ensure a cohesive academic experience. Furthermore, I helped peer mentors facilitate workshops for AETP. Another important aspect of my role was providing essential academic guidance to freshman students, helping them navigate their educational journey at UMBC. Through these efforts, I strive to create an inclusive and comprehensive learning environment that fosters growth and success for new students.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

The AETP program coordinator emailed the graduate directors regarding the position with detailed information. I emailed my resume along with a brief expression of my interest and was selected for an interview. Following a successful in-person interview, I received an offer from the program coordinator to join the position.

What resources did you use to find your current experience?

Networking events (UMBC Connects, Info Sessions, Arts With a Purpose, etc.)

What have you enjoyed the most about your position and organization?

My ultimate goal is to become a faculty member in my area of expertise within academia. I have thoroughly enjoyed my current position and have had the privilege of working for the new student community. Working alongside the UMBC community has been a major accomplishment for me, especially in collaborating with those involved in AETP. This internship has provided valuable insight into my future endeavors with my degree.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

Each day, I was engaged in conversations with summer bridge program students from various undergraduate majors, encouraging them to advocate for diversity and inclusion within the academic sphere. I helped freshmen become a part of the UMBC community. I am committed to creating a positive and impactful academic environment that fosters growth and success for all students through various initiatives such as research, academic success, and future job guidelines.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

If you are looking for internships, my advice is to focus your research on your areas of expertise. You can start by checking a company's website for any open positions, or look on job search platforms like LinkedIn, Indeed, and ZipRecruiter. However, the most helpful resources are Handshake and the Career Center, which can connect you with companies and provide access to internship opportunities. Another great option is to search on Google with the keyword "Google Jobs" to find a variety of internship opportunities in your field of expertise, as well as your preferred location and date posted. By using these methods, you can effectively find internships that match your skills and interests.

Never lose hope!

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

If you're looking to create a CV or resume and an impactful cover letter, the Career Center is always here to help. The Career Center will offer guidance on how to present your unique strengths and experiences in a way that captures the attention of potential employers.
