HackUMBC: 24-hour collegiate-level hackathon, Sept 23-24
HackUMBC, September 23-24, ISLB
HackUMBC is a 24-hour collegiate-level hackathon organized by undergraduates at UMBC. This exciting technological innovation event offers a wide range of workshops, including AI/ML, Web Development, Python, and more, catering to students of all skill levels, even those without prior experience. It aims to engage in helping students learn and build their skill sets through these workshops and take on developing technological projects with mentorship assistance all weekend long. This is an opportunity for students to interact with and build connections with industry professionals and UMBC faculty, allowing them to gain practical advice and valuable insight into the industry.
It will provide students with catered meals and entertainment to foster a sense of community within the innovative community that is present throughout our hackathon. We are expecting a turnout of around 500+ participants and sponsors such as Northrop Gruman, T. Rowe Price, and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory this year who are all excited to see what the hackers are building. We would love to have students showcase their innovation and creativity while fostering their technological skills throughout the event.
In addition to participation, there are also volunteering positions at hackUMBC. This is a great opportunity for students to get involved in the event's organization and gain valuable experience in event management, logistics, and teamwork. Volunteers will have the chance to work closely with the organizing team, assist workshop facilitators, and ensure a smooth and successful event for all participants.
We understand the demands of a hackathon, both mentally and physically. To ensure participants' well-being, hackUMBC provides complimentary snacks and meals throughout the event, ensuring that no one goes hungry. Additionally, we organize enjoyable activities to help students unwind and foster camaraderie. These activities include cup stacking competitions and gaming tournaments (historically Valorant and Super Smash Bros), creating a fun and engaging environment.

Women of Color STEM DXT Conference
STEM Conference and Career Fair- OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS
The 2023 Women of Color (WOC) STEM DTX conference, hosted
by Career Communications Group, Inc., is taking place October 12-14,
2023 with options to participate
either in-person or online. The conference features
leadership and professional development programs in addition to a career fair
where many top national and local companies in the STEM fields are actively
recruiting STEM interns and professionals.
You will need to register to participate. Open to ALL students! You can register to participate until the day of the event. However, it
will take about 15-30 minutes for registrations to be activated and to gain
access to the platform.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers is hosting two facility tours at Northrop Grumman!
This Friday, Sept. 8th, Northrop Grumman is kind enough to host the UMBC Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers chapter at two of their facilities. SHPE has an established partnership with the ADELANTE group at NG. They are very generous to open up not one but TWO of their engineering facilities for a student tour. There will be two tours happening consecutively:

Master's Thesis Defense
Leveraging Siamese Triplet Embeddings and Human Expert Data for Improved Reinforcement Learning Performance

Reinforcement Learning (RL) has shown great promise in solving complex decision-making problems. However, the high sample complexity of RL algorithms has motivated researchers to explore alternative approaches that can reduce the amount of data needed for learning. One such approach is to incorporate expert knowledge through supervised learning from human experts. This thesis explores using representation learning with Siamese networks to extract information from limited expert traces effectively. Experiments in the CartPole environment show the effectiveness of this approach. Both the accuracy of the classifiers at choosing the optimal action (label) is measured, as well as their ability to accumulate reward in the domain.

'23-'24 Multicultural Leadership Experience (MLE)

Applications for the '23-'24 MLE Cohort can be found HERE.
The Multicultural Leadership Experience (MLE) is a collaboration between Campus Life and Initiatives for Identity Inclusion & Belonging (i3B), that seeks to:
Engage participants in a multicultural development and leadership learning program;
Enhance participants' understanding of their social identities, leader identity, as well as their capacity to lead;
And enable participants' development through authenticity, self-awareness, relationships, and capitalizing on difference.

Participants will be exploring the concept of Authentic Leadership, Legacy Building, and Breaking Barriers of White Supremacy within Leadership. We will do this in a leadership learning cohort by:
- Enhancing participants' leader identity and leadership capacity using an identity-conscious lens and student development theories;
- Increasing participants' awareness of their personal abilities, identity development, and intersections that shape their story through authenticity, self-reflection, and cultural humility;
- Exploring the role they play in developing relationships while building intra/intercultural connections;
- And capitalizing on their differences, specifically in relation to their racial, ethnic, national, and other salient identity social groups
The purpose of all MLE programs is to provide a space for students and student leaders who identify within diverse or marginalized backgrounds to discover their own capacity to lead, while also promoting a better understanding of their experiences, issues, strengths, and outcomes in navigating their own collegiate careers. The National Science Foundation has awarded UMBC CSEE Professor Chenchen Liu a significant Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER) award that provides nearly $540,000 in funding over the next five years. This generous support aims to further the transformative work on AI systems, titled Rethinking PIM-Assisted GPU Computing for Multi-Tenant Artificial Intelligence.
As AI systems usher in a multi-tenant era with the simultaneous execution of multiple deep neural network (DNN) models, the computational landscape is becoming more intricate. This escalation presents new questions: How to architect a scalable computing framework for these concurrent DNN models? How can the system cater to the varying flexibility demands of multi-tenant DNN environments? And how can one efficiently construct and deploy the AI applications of tomorrow?
To tackle these problems, Professor Liu's project is segmented into three major research thrusts.

Thrust 1 will delve into the potential of a groundbreaking processing-in-memory (PIM) assisted graphical processing unit (GPU) architecture with distinct multi-tenant support. This thrust will address important resource contention and model interaction challenges.

Thrust 2 will explore how to harness GPU- and PIM-specific scheduling techniques to enhance the platform's performance.

Thrust 3 will further refine the multi-tenant AI application process in which a single service supports multiple independent users, covering algorithm optimization and support for code deployment to independent users.
By the conclusion of this research, Professor Liu aims to herald a new era in AI computing, setting the stage for the future of AI applications. The techniques proposed could accelerate the design and implementation of AI, promoting its broader use. This would find application in vital sectors like autonomous driving, metaverse experiences, advanced agriculture, and industrial frameworks.
This grant is more than just about advancing technology. It represents a commitment to educating the next generation of technology leaders. It will support research students in Dr. Liu's Computing Compass Laboratory. By weaving research findings into course materials and championing the increased involvement of underrepresented groups in computing, the project has a vision for a more inclusive tech ecosystem.
