Abstract: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) comprise more than 10,000 compounds with variable physicochemical properties. Targeted analytical approaches require standards that are limited, expensive, or unavailable. The total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay represents one option to address the complexity associated with unknown PFAS precursors. In particular, the TOP assay transforms precursors into perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA) endpoints via hydroxyl and sulfate radical-driven reactions. Solid samples, such as soil, sediment, and biosolids, contain high concentrations of reactive species scavengers that inhibit precursor oxidation; furthermore, PFAS extraction from solids involves solvent addition, which increases the potential for reactive species scavenging and necessitates further processing steps. The objective of this work was to improve the transformation efficiency, recovery efficiency, and throughput of the TOP assay for soil samples. Recovery efficiency was tracked via mass-labeled PFAA surrogates, which were not oxidized in TOP. Transformation efficiency was evaluated by introducing the M8-PFOSA surrogate standard into the original sample before extraction. PFAS, precursors, and mass-labeled surrogates were extracted with methanol, and the extracts were diluted with deionized water to 20% methanol. To improve transformation efficiency, solid-phase extraction with weak-anion exchange cartridges was used to remove background organic matter. Precursors were eluted with acetonitrile, evaporated, and reconstituted with TOP reagents. After 24 h at 85 °C, the PFAA end-products were present in saline water, affecting analytical compatibility and complicating enrichment. A QuEChERS extraction was employed by adding acetonitrile, magnesium sulfate, and sodium chloride. The acetonitrile-based extract was evaporated, reconstituted with internal standards, and analyzed for targeted PFAS. Recovery efficiency was dependent on chain length and ranged from 64 to 115%. The M8-PFOSA transformation efficiency was greater than 75% for over 20 soil samples from a PFAS-impacted site. Results showed ng g-1 quantitation of over 30 PFAS, highlighting the strong performance of this modified TOP assay for real solid samples.

Max Bobbin

Degree: B.S., Chemical Engineering; B.A., Philosophy
Hometown: Joppa, MD
Post-grad plans: Ph.D. in chemical engineering, University of Delaware

Max Bobbin may still be an undergraduate, but he’s already made significant research contributions in the Artificial Intelligence and Theory-Oriented Molecular Science (ATOMS) lab, led byTyler Josephson, assistant professor of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering. Bobbin was the first in the research group to develop expertise in the programming language Lean. He took on a leadership role, teaching other lab members, including Josephson, about new ways to use Lean. He also selected appropriate projects for new team members, helped the group prepare for Josephson’s parental leave, and initiated new directions for the lab’s work.

Bobbin believes his additional philosophy major supported his engineering work in important ways. “For an engineer, the most important skills are problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication,” he says, “and philosophy is a major built around those three ideas.”

Bobbin also served as vice president of the UMBC American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) student chapter and led UMBC to the AIChE Jeopardy national championship in 2022.

Intern of the Week: Suhetu Ring

  <Tagline>Check out Suhetu's internship with CloudLeap Technologies</Tagline>

Name: Suhetu Ring

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: CloudLeap Technologies

Position Title: Data Science Intern

Major or Program: MPS Data Science

Current Class Level: Master’s Student

Work Term: Spring 2023

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

CloudLeap Technologies being a small scale Big Data company, my internship responsibilities vary and I'm expected to wear many hats. I am required to code solutions using multiple technologies such as Python, Apache Spark and leverage Machine Learning principles. One of the most interesting works I've been involved in here was the 'VETAssist' project which was developed and presented by me at the 'TOP Summit 2023' hosted by the US Census Bureau during Feb 22-24 this year. It was an amazing experience during which I learnt a lot. I was constantly involved in communicating with product advocates, user base in Puerto Rico and government advisors who guided our company to developing a 'Minimum Viable Product' for the Summit. It really put our company out there and was a head turner. Currently I'm handling the responsibility of handling multiple Government Project Opportunity Vehicles such as GSA EBuy, SAM.gov for our company to find project opportunities.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I had applied through UMBCworks last summer during June 2022 for a Summer Internship, which has been extending till date until May 2023. I'm grateful for that. After that, I was called for an in-person interview which tested my Apache Spark knowledge and my past experience in the Data Science field.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBCworks

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

Handling multiple roles and taking up work in fields I've never really explored is what I feel I've enjoyed the most. I've enjoyed utilizing my hard skills as well as developing tons of soft skills like communication, presentation, planning which according to my manager is really useful in the professional sector.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe I've made noticable project advancements for CloudLeap in the Big Data field. Because of the work I've been doing here, we gathered audience, made connections and are on the process of establishing ourselves in the Big Data Sector, of course with the help and guidance of our whole team at CloudLeap.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

I would recommend feeling confident in whatever role or position you're applying to. As students we need to have self confidence in our knowledge and ourselves generally.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

The Career Center really gives us the platform to develop ourselves professionally. They do this by holding workshops, recommending opportunities and inviting companies over for talks. All of this really guides us and makes us understand how we need to obtain the skills needed for professional progression.
