Intern of the Week: Tahereh Hematian

 <Tagline>Check out Tahereh's Data Analyst Internship</Tagline>

Name: Tahereh Hematian

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: Maryland Department of Health

Position Title: Data Analyst

Major or Program: Data Science

Current Class Level: Graduate Student

Work Term: Spring 2022

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

My day-to-day job is utilizing machine learning algorithms for two specific areas: time series analysis and natural language processing. Via these experiences I have gained intuitions as to which machine learning model is the most effective one for the problems assigned to me. Exposure to time series data helped me build a foundation of how to visual and analyze past data and predictions using Python. Also, my day-to-day job begins with a scrum meeting where we review past challenges and plan for the upcoming day. These meetings have provided me with a bird's-eye view of the project landscape, as I have had the opportunity to listen to other team members who work on different tasks.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

Finding my internship is an interesting story, as I was able to get the position after my first interview in the US. I should note that Mrs. Diane Crump-Fogle played a significant role in introducing me to the position and guiding me through the application process.

Which of the following resources did you use to find your current experience?

UMBC Career Center

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

I enjoyed many aspects of my internship, including the opportunity to learn new things and work on projects that allowed for exploration and growth. The joy of my work was amplified by the pleasure of working with two exceptional mentors, Dr. Sharmin Hossain and Dr. Som Mukherjee. They were both understandable, supportive, and insightful, and provided me with the space to explore while encouraging me to build my confidence. Their belief in my potential and guidance in developing the necessary skills and knowledge for success was invaluable.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I have developed a pipeline that includes a machine learning time series model for predicting the number of daily crashes across the state of Maryland. My hope is that this model will assist other departments, such as the police department, in allocating their resources more efficiently.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Believe in yourselves and your abilities, and take action - take it soon.

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

My mentors provided a peaceful environment in which I could work without stress. This helped me to reach my full potential and push myself to achieve even more. I must acknowledge that it would not have been possible without the assistance of the Career Center, who introduced me to this position.

Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Heritage Month

<Tagline>Celebrate May as APIDA Heritage Month</Tagline>

Throughout the month of May, UMBC, Maryland and the Country celebrate the history, resilience, and cultures of Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) communities worldwide as a part of APIDA Heritage Month.

The Month of May carries significance as it commemorates the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the transcontinental railroad completion on May 10, 1869 - honoring the majority Chinese Immigrants who laid the tracks. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter designated the first 10 days of May as Asian-Pacific Heritage Week. However, it was not until 1990 that President George H. W. Bush sign a bill turning Asian-American Heritage Week into Asian-American Heritage Month. 1992 was the first year that May was officially celebrated as Asian-American Heritage Month.

APIDA Heritage Month is a celebration of Asians, Southeast Asians, South Asians, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders in the United States. APIDA encompasses people from all of the Asian continent, India, and the Pacific islands of Melanesia (New Guinea, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji and the Solomon Islands), Micronesia (Marianas, Guam, Wake Island, Palau, Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Nauru and the Federated States of Micronesia) and Polynesia (New Zealand, Hawaiian Islands, Rotuma, Midway Islands, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Cook Islands, French Polynesia and Easter Island).

This month goes by many names and it is a great time to recognize the different acronyms and the communities within these groups:

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM)

Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPIHM)

Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AANHPIHM)

Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Heritage Month (APIDAHM)

Today, there are over 20 million Asian Americans that trace their roots to more than 20 countries, each with their own unique histories, cultures, languages, and norms. While this diverse group is often treated as a monolith, significant differences exist by income, education, religion, etc.

Throughout U.S. history and over the past few years, we know our APIDA community has been impacted by Asian American hate crimes and anti-Asian sentiment. But even as we navigate these ongoing pains, we must also find/create and center spaces for joy, intentional rest, and shared community. Honoring APIDA Heritage Month is more than just recognizing the cultures and history of this vast diaspora, it's about amplifying lived experiences, uncovering challenging histories and recommitting to shared action and justice.

Robots are machines that can sense the environment and use that information to perform an action. You can find them nearly everywhere in industrialized societies today. There are household robots that vacuum floors and warehouse robots that pack and ship goods. Lab robots test hundreds of clinical samples a day. Education robots support teachers by acting as one-on-one tutors, assistants and discussion facilitators.
Figuring out how humans and robots can collaborate to effectively carry out tasks together is a rapidly growing area of interest to the scientists and engineers that design robots as well as the people who will use them. For successful collaboration between humans and robots, communication is key.

How people communicate with robots

Robots were originally designed to undertake repetitive and mundane tasks and operate exclusively in robot-only zones like factories. Robots have since advanced to work collaboratively with people with new ways to communicate with each other.

Cooperative control is one way to transmit information and messages between a robot and a person. It involves combining human abilities and decision making with robot speed, accuracy and strength to accomplish a task.

For example, robots in the agriculture industry can help farmers monitor and harvest crops. A human can control a semi-autonomous vineyard sprayer through a user interface, as opposed to manually spraying their crops or broadly spraying the entire field and risking pesticide overuse.

Robots can also support patients in physical therapy. Patients who had a stroke or spinal cord injury can use robots to practice hand grasping and assisted walking during rehabilitation.

Another form of communication, emotional intelligence perception, involves developing robots that adapt their behaviors based on social interactions with humans. In this approach, the robot detects a person's emotions when collaborating on a task, assesses their satisfaction, then modifies and improves its execution based on this feedback.

For example, if the robot detects that a physical therapy patient is dissatisfied with a specific rehabilitation activity, it could direct the patient to an alternate activity. Facial expression and body gesture recognition ability are important design considerations for this approach. Recent advances in machine learning can help robots decipher emotional body language and better interact with and perceive humans.

Robots in rehab

Questions like how to make robotic limbs feel more natural and capable of more complex functions like typing and playing musical instruments have yet to be answered.

I am an electrical engineer who studies how the brain controls and communicates with other parts of the body, and my lab investigates in particular how the brain and hand coordinate signals between each other. Our goal is to design technologies like prosthetic and wearable robotic exoskeleton devices that could help improve function for individuals with stroke, spinal cord and traumatic brain injuries.

One approach is through brain-computer interfaces, which use brain signals to communicate between robots and humans. By accessing an individual's brain signals and providing targeted feedback, this technology can potentially improve recovery time in stroke rehabilitation. Brain-computer interfaces may also help restore some communication abilities and physical manipulation of the environment for patients with motor neuron disorders.

The future of human-robot interaction

Effective integration of robots into human life requires balancing responsibility between people and robots, and designating clear roles for both in different environments.

As robots are increasingly working hand in hand with people, the ethical questions and challenges they pose cannot be ignored. Concerns surrounding privacy, bias and discrimination, security risks and robot morality need to be seriously investigated in order to create a more comfortable, safer and trustworthy world with robots for everyone. Scientists and engineers studying the "dark side" of human-robot interaction are developing guidelines to identify and prevent negative outcomes.

Human-robot interaction has the potential to affect every aspect of daily life. It is the collective responsibility of both the designers and the users to create a human-robot ecosystem that is safe and satisfactory for all.

Researchers Help With Breakthroughs In Salmon Farming

Matthew Stromberg, environmental engineering Ph.D. student, was recently mentioned in the Science article, "OCEANS AWAY: Is raising salmon on land the next big thing in farming fish?" by Erik Stokstad. Stomberg is co-advised by Dr. Ghosh, professor of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering and Dr. Zohar, professor of marine biotechnology.

The article explores the emerging trend of land-based fish farming, specifically focusing on Superior Fresh, a Wisconsin-based farm that raises Atlantic salmon. The farm's unique approach to raising fish in tanks and integrating them with its greenhouse operations has attracted attention from investors and customers looking for locally produced and high-quality fish.

The article highlights the challenges associated with land-based fish farming, including the high costs of equipment and infrastructure, potential environmental impacts, and the need to address fish health and welfare. To address some of these challenges, the farm has implemented various innovative practices, such as using ultraviolet light to purify water and using antisense RNA to prevent salmon from sexually maturing and ensuring larger filets.

Stromberg is testing a system that uses ultraviolet light and titanium electrodes to break down water-borne chemicals that can give land-reared salmon a muddy flavor. Their research is crucial in ensuring the long-term success of land-based fish farming.
