Interact is a 5-week program focused on creating an introduction to the dialogue skills required to engage in difficult conversations, dialogue across difference, and intercultural dialogue. Interact is NOT designed to be intercultural dialogue, but instead an introduction to the skills required for dialogue broadly. The goal of Interact at UMBC is to develop foundational dialogue skills such as critical self-awareness, listening and sharing authentically, asking questions toward creating deep connections, and apologizing and adjusting appropriately, while creating opportunities for participants to become more self-aware. As a result of participation in Interact, participants will have the skills to engage in dialogue within any type of situation (perceived safe or unsafe) and any topic of conversation (perceived difficult or not).

Women's Center Lactation Room - Spring Reservations
Schedule Your Reservation for Spring 2023 Semester!

Moms and parents who plan on using the Women's Center lactation room, now officially named the Maxine Tracy Wellness Room, throughout the winter and spring semester are encouraged to sign up for their preferred reservation times. We are accepting reservations now.
To reserve your time, email
womenscenter@umbc.edu for access to our online reservation form. You can also stop by the Women's Center during our hours of operation to complete the form in person. All parents who reserve times will be added to the lactation room google calendar and a group email list in order to support communication and best navigate multiple people using the space.
While the Women's Center works diligently with parents to ensure access to the lactation room, we're also pleased to partner with the Library which now also hosts a lactation room.
AOK Library has a lactation room available on the 7th floor. The room includes a table, two chairs, an outlet and power strip, and sanitizing wipes.. It may be reserved for up to one hour, up to 7 days in advance. A key is also available on a first-come, first-served basis at the Check Out Desk on the Library's first floor. Reserve the Lactation Room for periods up to 1 hour.
We also have an additional lactation room available on the ground floor of the RAC (room 073). This room has a sink and chair. This room is first-come-first-serve. The Women’s Center oversees the operation of this room. If you experience any issues or have any concerns related to the space, please contact us.

UPDATE: We Believe You Discussion Group Meeting Soon!!
Interested in attending? We want your opinion!
The We Believe You (WBY) discussion group is a space for survivors of gender- and power-based violence to build community among one another. This discussion-based program follows the Women’s Center Brave Space model to provide a welcoming environment and thoughtful community to engage in conversations focused on support and healing for survivors of sexual violence. This group centers the experiences of survivors and their allies, but all are welcome!
This semester, we are doing something a bit different... If you are interested in attending biweekly discussion group meetings (i.e. every other week), please sign-up below.
We will move forward with discussion groups only if we have at least 5 people sign up. Our myUMBC will be updated to reflect either the addition of meetings or a notice that WBY is on hiatus. UPDATE: We have received a lot of interest so rest assured we will be hosting We Believe You for the spring semester! Check out our events for the full calendar.
The deadline to sign up for WBY (Part 1) will be Thursday, February 9th!
Please note: you are free to attend/not attend the group whenever you'd like. Interest in the group and indication of preferred dates does not mean you are obligated to attend.
For the Spring 2023, we will be hosting a sign-up at the beginning of the semester and at the mid-point (around Spring Break).

Women's Center Spring '23 Hours, Services + Resources
Wherever you are the Women's Center is here for you!
Women's Center Spring 2023 Hours of Operation:
Beginning on the first day of classes, the Women's Center will resume our traditional in-person hours of operation and will welcome community members into our physical space.
Masks are not required to be in our space, but we appreciate you wearing them; masks are available at our front desk.
Our Spring Hours are:
Mondays through Thursdays: 9:30am - 5pm
Fridays: 10am - 3pm
While we are physically open, the Women's Center will also continue to provide support and services virtually Monday through Friday to those who are learning and working remotely. Individualized Support Meetings:

Dr. LaBerge Wins Prestigious Award
2022 winner of EUROCAE Global Harmonization Award
Dr. Chuck LaBerge, Professor of the Practice of CSEE
at UMBC and immediate past Chair of RTCA SC-222, has been named the 2022 winner
of EUROCAE Global Harmonization Award for his "commitment and excellent
contributions to EUROCAE WG-82/RTCA SC-222 New Air-Ground Data Link
Technologies." The award, which was
announced at the 2022 EUROCAE Symposium in Warsaw in April, 2022, was presented
on behalf of the EUROCAE Council by Mr. Al Secan, Vice President of RTCA, Inc.
at the quarterly meeting of the RTCA Program Management Committee on September

original video presentation of the award in April, Mr. Secen commented on "[Dr.
LaBerge's] ability and skill in leading the committee through a rose garden
full of thorny issues."
Dr. LaBerge has participated in RTCA, EUROCAE, and
ICAO standards-setting activities since 1976, playing a significant role in the
development of more than 16 standards, plus nearly that number of revisions and
updates to account for changing technology.
These standards include those for all of the safety-related digital
communications used by modern airliners, including HFDL, VDL Mode 2, VDL Mode
3, Inmarsat and Iridium satellite communications for both data and voice. In addition, he was responsible for the
interference analysis that forms the basis for the standards that permit use of
WiFi onboard passenger-carrying aircraft.
From October 2008 through July 2021, he served as the chair of RTCA
SC-222 Aeronautical Mobile Satellite (Route) Service systems which developed
multiple standards (and revisions) for systems and equipment used " ... to ensure safety
and regularity of flight on national and international air routes." SC-222's work was conducted in collaboration
with EUROCAE WG-82 on New Air-Ground Data Link Technologies, chaired by Dr.
Armin Schlereth of the DFS (the German equivalent to the FAA.)
Dr. LaBerge is the recipient of the 2018 UMBC College
of Engineering and Information Technology award for Excellence in Teaching and
the 2020 University System of Maryland Board of Regents Award for Teaching
Excellence. He teaches a variety of
professional practice and communications-related courses in the Computer
Engineering program.
EUROCAE was founded as the European Organization for
Civil Aviation Electronics in 1963 with the object to develop standards for
European civil aviation. It plays an important role in coordinating European
and global standardization activities.
In recent years, an increasing number of EUROCAE Working Groups work
collaboratively with their RTCA counterparts.
RTCA was founded as the Radio Technical Committee for
Aeronautics in 1935, RTCA has provided the foundation for many modern technical
advances in aviation. An independent Standards Development Organization (SDO),
RTCA's comprehensive products serve as the basis for government certification
of equipment used by the tens of thousands of aircraft flying daily through the
world's airspace. In recent years, an
increasing number of RTCA Special Committees work collaboratively with their
EUROCAE counterparts.
