Intern of the Week: Riya Kaneria

<Tagline>Check out Riya's Economic Development Internship with USM!</Tagline>

Name: Riya Kaneria

Internship, Co-op, or Research Site: University System of Maryland

Position Title: Economic Development Intern (Consultant)

Major or Program: Information Systems

Current Class Level: Master's Student

Work Term: Summer 2022

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

"My work as an intern was working on the early development of USM's early stage entrepreneurship program. The University System of Maryland’s Early-Stage Entrepreneurship Capital Program is based on providing funding for early-stage startups and is committed to support student , faculty, alum and community entrepreneurs who are connected to the institution. The program includes connecting and increasing accessibility for early-stage entrepreneurs to existing resources; providing mentorship and enhancing access to early capital.

I assisted in developing the application, the rubric for analysis and other essential tasks in the program. I lead the lift-off track of this program which helped us stay on track with our deadlines. I also assisted in conducting the mock application round and was one of the reviewers for the applications.

My day-to-day responsibilities differed at every stage in the program. It started with attending weekly meetings, planning and discussing the contents of applications. I had the chance to meet people from various venture capitals, collaborators, raised entreprenuers to discuss various aspects of our program. My work as an intern included providing a student's point of view at every stage in the program, conducting research for better decision making. "

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I had an opportunity for this position through the UMBC career center. Earlier that term, I had taken a zero credit course PRAC 112, that I had taken under Annie Weinschenk through which I gained the knowledge and confidence to apply for this position.

It was a broadcast email from the career center, which mentioned the position and the description for the same. I immediately emailed Christine Routzahn with my resume. It was Christine and the career center who recognized and considered my application. My application was sent to USM and I was given the opportunity for an interview with Lindsay Ryan ( Interim Executive Director of Economic Development) . The following week I was offered the position as their Economic Development Intern for Summer 2022.

"

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

The most amazing thing about my position was that my thoughts and ideas were always valued and considered. My opinion in the overall development process mattered a lot. I always felt welcomed and that is what motivated me to work harder everyday to make our ideas a reality.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I doubted myself when I first applied for this position that how can someone from an Information Systems background help in Economic Development of an organization. Slowly I realised how important a student's perspective is, in programs like these. It was a smooth transition for me.

I have the courage to speak up and share what I believed, which has made a great impact on our program in developing new ideas and fuel discussions. I have had the chance to network and build connections not only limited to the organization. These long term relationships will play a vital part to my career growth. I had the chance to make an impact on our young entreprenuers and our program is going to change many lives of many early stage entrepreneurs.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

The only advice I would give is to be open-minded and ready to learn. Always listen your instinct and have confidence. When is comes to seeking opportunities like these, always look out for emails or flyers that are sent. These are life changing opportunities and will always help you focus on your strengths .

Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

This experience has given me a sense of self realisation. I would have never got this opportunity if I had not replied to that email. I would just say : "Believe in yourself and seize every opportunity because one day you will look back to your career and be proud that you tried everything"

As cyberattacks continue to grow in prevalence and sophistication, their costs continue to increase for corporations, governments, and consumers. But what are the next threats that we should be preparing for? Join the DataWorks MD Meetup in December to hear from UMBC cybersecurity expert Dr. Richard Forno on what evils are lurking over the horizon.

This discussion will explore several likely cyber-related threats facing individuals, businesses, and global society at large over the next decade. In doing so, the state of cybersecurity at America's grassroots --our cities and communities-- will be examined since not only are these the most intimate levels of government interaction with citizens, but they often are fairly vulnerable targets.

Dr. Richard Forno is a Principal Lecturer in the UMBC Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, where he directs the UMBC Graduate Cybersecurity Program, serves as the Assistant Director of the UMBC Center for Cybersecurity, and is an Affiliate of the Stanford Law School's Center for Internet and Society (CIS). Prior to academia, his twenty-year career in operational cybersecurity includes helping build a formal cybersecurity program for the US House of Representatives, serving as the first Chief Security Officer for Network Solutions (then the global center of the internet DNS system), consulting to Fortune 100 companies, the government, military, and more. As a technologist and student of national security studies, Dr. Forno is an unconventional, albeit realistic, critical thinker about the relationships between technology, security, and society.

Social media platforms have begun to counter false news by integrating fact-checking services. These fact checkers verify posts’ content and inform users about the posts’ veracity before engaging with them. While the efficacy of fact-checking on users has been studied in prior literature, little attention has been paid to the factors that determine the effectiveness of fact-checking (e.g., fact-checking timeliness or reputation of the poster) to sway user reactions. Our multi-method study leverages the high external validity of observational data from Twitter (Study 1) complemented by the high internal validity of experimental data (Study 2) to build insights into how fact-checking methods and poster attributes affect news engagement (i.e., willingness to read, talk, comment, and share).

We find when fact-checking flags news as false significantly decreases news engagement and that fact-checking timeliness and poster reputation moderate the effect of fact-checking. Moreover, we find that fact-checking affects news engagement by influencing users’ evaluation of the news believability and shareability. Our findings enrich the understanding of the impact of fact-checking on users’ engagement with news and suggest managerial implications for reducing false news engagement.

Heartfelt Career Connections over Thanksgiving Break

Many of us will be spending
more time than usual with our families, neighbors, friends, and loved ones over
          the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday.
Between mouthfuls of turkey and pumpkin pie - or other favorite dishes!
          - this may be the perfect opportunity to talk with them about things you
normally don't get a chance to explore regarding their learning journeys and
career paths. Their responses may not only help to forge closer relationships
but may also support your own career exploration.

For instance, you may want to
          ask:

What do you most enjoy
          learning about and why?

What do you most enjoy about your current work? What do you enjoy least?

What sparked you to
          follow your current career path?

What experiences do you
think have been the most impactful for you?

What recommendations do you have for me as I get started on my own journey?

Hearing your loved ones' experiences may also help you to reflect on your own journey to date: what classes
have most captured your interest; which moments have helped guide you to your
own career discovery moment, what campus activities have helped you to build key
career skills and develop lifelong friends; what experiences on-campus have you
been meaning to check-out but haven't yet?

Through these conversations, you
may find it helpful to know that others have forged their own paths - sometimes
down long and winding roads and with both positive and negative experiences - that
guided their career decision making process.
It is possible that by opening up this conversation with loved ones, a space to share your own career vision, dreams, and even fears may also open up as well.

You may find that these
conversations re-energize you in your own career exploration and career
planning activities! When you return to campus following this well-deserved break, please know that all of our Career Center resources are at your
fingertips such as online materials and counseling appointments to explore

opportunities, and information to assist those of you who want to continue your education after UMBC. We love to talk
about all these resources and welcome you to visit us anytime either in-person on the 2nd floor of the Math and Psychology building, Rm. 201 or via virtual appointments on Handshake!

Enjoy the holiday!

UMBC chemical engineering students win ChemE Jeopardy national championship

By: Dinah Winnick | Published: Nov 17, 2022 | UMBC NEWS

UMBC is again a national champion, now in ChemE Jeopardy. A UMBC student team of chemical engineering majors emerged victorious last weekend at the national competition in Phoenix, Arizona, hosted by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), besting fellow finalists University of Iowa and University of Southern California.

This was a long-sought victory for the team, which won second place in both 2020 and 2021, narrowly missing the title. This ascent is particularly remarkable considering that UMBC only began competing in 2019.

The ChemE Jeopardy competition experience

Members of the 2022 national champion team include Catherine Wraback ’23, president of the UMBC chapter of AIChE; Max Bobbin ’23, vice president of the group; Colin Jones ’25; and Pavan Umashankar ’24. Supporting the team are Jeopardy Chair Taylor DeSilva ‘23, chemical engineering, and AIChE chapter advisor Mariajosé Castellanos, undergraduate program director and principal lecturer in chemical biochemical, and environmental engineering (CBEE).

“This was my first time attending the national competition,” says Wraback. “Walking into the room and seeing three tables set-up (one for each team) with all the buzzers and scratch paper and pencil, was an unparalleled feeling.” Wraback explains that each competition board consists of six categories, drawing from core engineering courses (such as thermodynamics and heat and mass transfer), general science and math (such as organic chemistry and linear algebra), and general knowledge.

“You can feel the energy in the room with the other teams and it is contagious,” she says. In particular, she appreciated the support her team had in the packed competition room, from UMBC faculty to students she had met at the conference who came with their classmates to cheer for the team.

And UMBC students who couldn’t join them in Phoenix were supporting them through well wishes in their Discord server. “It made us feel supported and empowered,” says Wraback.

Road to the finals

“The students practiced extensively in preparation for the finals,” says team advisor Neha Raikar, lecturer in CBEE. This included not just studying technical content, but also building trust, bonding as a team, and prioritizing communication with each other.

“The team is well-balanced,” Raikar notes. “Members range from second-year students to seniors, representing all three CBEE tracks: traditional, biotechnology and bioengineering, and environmental engineering and sustainability. They play to each other’s strengths.”

Wraback agrees, sharing, “The most challenging part of being on the team has been understanding that it is okay not to know everything. I never want to let any of my team members down, but I also know that we all have our unique strengths, which overall makes us an incredibly strong team.”

That team’s sense of connection came through in the final round of competition. “As the answers were revealed, we found out we were the only team to get the question right so it really came down to the wagers we put,” Wraback recalls.

“I remember grabbing the hands of my teammates as we waited for the wagers to be revealed,” she says. “In an instant we saw the final scores and that we won by 200 points—such a close game. We all cheered and screamed and were just in absolute shock. It was so exciting, especially since we have been working so hard for this for so long.”

Making a name for themselves

On the path to victory, UMBC at one point bested Virginia Tech with a score of 7,100 to 63. “We compete against top schools at both regional and national levels, which shows the strength of UMBC’s chemical engineering program and our students’ fighting spirit,” says Raikar. “Even though we are a relatively small department, we pose a challenge to bigger schools.”

That’s in large part thanks to UMBC’s supportive community, says Wraback, who, after graduation, will help develop next-generation flight technology and aerospace systems at GE Aerospace, while also pursuing a master’s degree in materials science and engineering. She notes, “I truly believe that behind every successful person and team there is a community that is lifting them up and supporting them.”

In just a few years of national competition, the team has already made a name for itself. The competition’s organizing committee projected UMBC to be a finalist, and other universities are now reaching out to collaborate.
