Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities. 

I was a summer analyst in the Firm Market Risk department, and I was a part of the Fundamental Review of the Trading Book (FRTB) team. I assessed Greek-based risk sensitivities for various instruments in the FED Hypothetical Portfolio Exercise according to the FRTB rule. Also, I created a document management system and migrated all the team files from SharePoint to Microsoft Teams. I researched and consulted with my fellow coworkers to make an assessment about the possibility of an US recession in a group of four people.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard about the position during the Morgan Stanley UMBC Connects session. I submitted the application in October, and I interviewed towards the end of November. I went through one preliminary interview and a superday.


What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?  

I enjoyed the people and their genuine interest to teach me. Everyone wanted to see me succeed, and they were willing to help me out when I asked for help.


How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I created a template that helps assess risk sensitivities based on the FRTB rule for different instruments, and I helped the team come up with a new organization system for their files.


What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience? 

Make sure to do your research on the company and its culture, and the role before applying and interviewing.

I was treated as if I was a analyst and not a summer analyst. I loved that everyone was willing to teach me when I asked for help.

GWST 381: Reproductive Justice 
The course investigates the histories, cultural politics, and embodied practices of human reproduction in the US using a reproductive justice framework. It examines heteropatriarchal  and white supremacist institutions and ideologies that shape American notions of appropriate family formation, national belonging, and reproductive liberty/duty. It considers the impacts of both material technologies for preventing, interrupting, and assisting procreative processes and organized advocacy for sexual and reproductive rights, health, and justice on diverse reproductive lives. Instructor: Dr. Carole McCann

CSST 210 - Introduction to Critical Sexuality Studies

This course introduces students to the field of critical sexuality studies. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the course conducts a critical inquiry into the historical precedents and theoretical frameworks necessary to understand the role of sexuality in shaping personal, social, economic, and political life. The course focuses on patterns of subordination and exclusion based on individuals sexual practices and identities, explains the origins and persistence of those patterns, and considers ways of challenging them. Throughout the course, special attention will be given to intersections of sexuality with gender, race, ethnicity, religion, class, and disability.

CSST 300 - Methodologies in Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies

This writing intensive seminar introduces students to the theory and practice of interdisciplinary research in the field of gender, women's, and sexuality studies. The course examines the distinguishing features of feminist methodologies that draw from the social sciences and the humanities. By reading and discussing examples of excellent and innovative research, students will become acquainted with the practical details, intellectual challenges, and the ethical dilemmas involved in doing research about women, gender, and sexuality. The course also explores the connections between research and community activism. **This class is cross-listed with GWST 300

CSST 485- Sexuality + Queer Theory

This course is a seminar in sexuality and queer theory. The primary focus is critical engagement with social, political, and cultural theories of the social construction of sexuality and sexual identities, and of the sources, causes, and effects of sexual inequality and strategies for reducing or eradicating inequality. While emphasis will be placed on theories of sexuality, substantial time will be spent on theories of how sexuality is implicated in and supported by other forms of inequality such as gender, race, ethnicity, and class.

Interdisciplinary  Research on Cybersecurity Instruction

The UMBC Department of Education Research Seminar series continues on November 2nd with a presentation by Linda Oliva.  Dr. Oliva will present her work with Dr. Alan Sherman and other colleagues in Computer Science investigating cybersecurity instruction over the past decade.  She will describe the wide variety of projects and outcomes resulting from the collaboration including the most recent grant focused on instructional practices at the US Naval Academy and West Point.  She will share the lessons she learned about what skills teacher educators can bring to interdisciplinary research and the benefits of extending into areas beyond your expertise.

There's still plenty of time to register via EventBrite for an online Community Leadership Skills Course Info Session this Thursday, 10/27 from 12:00 to 1:00pm. 

In Winter and Spring 2023, we're offering 4 Skills Courses -- Digital Storytelling, Asset-Based Community Development, Restorative Practices, and Social Justice Leadership and Dialogue.  Each course is worth one credit, and offers the chance to take a deep dive into a specific community leadership skill with subject-matter experts.  

We welcome ongoing learners who are not enrolled at UMBC, and who want to take a skills course for their personal and professional development!

The Digital Storytelling Course will take place over three full days in January (1/9-1/11) while the other courses will meet once a week, on Wednesday evenings, for 5 weeks in the Spring Semester.  

A Zoom link will be shared with everyone who registers.

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities. 

During my internship at OIG, I summarized the investigations public synopsis, arranged and designed the 20-page report that was published on their website and got the opportunity to network with some fantastic people on the team. I also got to see how fraud and finical waste is assessed in the city of Baltimore. 

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

Using LinkedIn, I had alerts setup for various positions of interest. I regularly visited the career websites or sections of specific organizations and sought referrals where possible. I applied for the position within a few days of learning about it in October 2021.


What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?  

The opportunity to contribute daily to meaningful work that facilitates meeting customer needs and securing their information.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

My work directly contributed to a more responsive security program for the organization.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience? 

"Start early, prioritize organizations that meet your long-term aspirations, build relevant skills, network and be persistent. Have the Career Center team review your resume."


Please provide a short reflection or quote about what you liked most about your position / earning internship credit / working with the Career Center.

Finding out how the investigations of Baltimore cities financial waste and fraud were handled was the most interesting part of it all for me.
