          <div><span>We are excited to announce the UMBC Career Center's transition to <a href="https://careers.umbc.edu/handshake/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Handshake</a>, which has become the #1 place employers recruit college students and recent graduates.</span></div>

          <div><span>This platform is now live and will replace the university's current system, UMBCworks.</span></div>
          <div><span><br></span></div>
          <div><span>There are a number of reasons we are making this change. Below are just a few:</span></div>

          <li><span>We expect an increase of 3x the number of internships and full-time postings. More than 550,000 employers, including 100% of the Fortune 500 companies, utilize Handshake to post their open positions. </span></li>
          <li><span>You will receive personalized job and internship recommendations, be able to connect with employers and peers working at organizations that interest you, and get an inside look at organizations with thousands of student reviews.</span></li>
          <li><span>Handshake's mobile app lets you explore events and positions, review interview schedules, and access resources while on the go!

          <p><span>Dear UMBC Community,</span><br><br>We are excited to announce the Career Center's transition to <a href="https://careers.umbc.edu/handshake/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Handshake</a><span>, which has become the number one place employers recruit college students and recent graduates. More than 1,400 colleges and universities now partner with Handshake, making it the top platform among career centers across the nation.</span></p>
          <p><span>This platform is now live and will replace the university's current system, UMBCworks.</span><br><br><span>There are a number of reasons we are making this change. Below are just a few:</span></p>
          <ul>
          <li><span>We will be able to seamlessly connect with new employers that may have otherwise been unreachable. More than 550,000 employers, including 100 percent of the Fortune 500 companies, use Handshake to post their open positions. We expect to triple the number of internships and full-time position postings.</span></li>
          <li><span>Students and alumni will receive personalized job and internship recommendations, connect with employers and peers working at organizations that interest them, and get an inside look at organizations with thousands of student reviews.</span></li>
          <li><span>Handshake's mobile app lets users explore events and position postings, review interview schedules, and access resources while on the go!</span></li>
          </ul>
          <p><span>Colleges, divisions, departments, and units across campus are highly encouraged to </span><a href="https://careers.umbc.edu/files/2022/07/On-Campus-Handshake-Account-Creation-and-Job-Posting-Instructions.pdf" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">start posting open student positions</a> for both undergraduate and graduate students as soon as possible. New student enrollment is in full swing and our Retrievers are now logging into Handshake seeking jobs for the upcoming academic year. Please also be sure to <a href="https://my3.my.umbc.edu/groups/sites/posts/126201" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">update your webpages to reflect this change</a><span>.</span></p>
          <p><span>Students have started completing their profiles on </span><a href="https://careers.umbc.edu/handshake/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Handshake</a> and making appointments with our career specialists.           <p><span>CWIT Donor-Supported Scholarship Applications Open Now!</span></p>
          <br><p><span>COEIT Students: Apply via Scholarship Retriever by August 5 </span></p>
          <br><p><span>The Center for Women in Technology periodically receives donations from individuals and organizations who want to support students through scholarships. We are currently accepting applications for these Donor-Supported Scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year. Current COEIT undergraduate students of all genders in good academic standing are welcome to apply. The awards will be made by the beginning of the Fall 2022 semester, and range in amount from $1000 to $3000 for the academic year.     <Title>i3b Updates: Staffing and Summer Hours</Title>

          <div class="html-content"><span><p><span><strong>We are wishing you a restful remainder of the summer! Find some relevant updates and full staff list below.</strong></span></p>
          <p><span>From July 1 - August 8, i3b will be operating virtually. This means that all three spaces will be physically closed. During this virtual time, we will be onboarding new staff, cleaning and reorganizing our spaces, and training student staff. While we will be largely virtual, we are still happy to connect with students and community members, provide services, and meet virtually or in person. Please connect with us to schedule an in-person appointment as needed.</span></p>

    <strong>Dr. Govind Rao </strong>was quoted in an June 2022 article by Rebeca Sohn for IEE Spectrum for the Technology Insider  titled "<a href="https://spectrum.ieee.org/pulse-oximeters-encode-racial-bias-with-clear-consequences-for-covid-19-patients." rel="nofollow external" class="bo">The Fatal Flaw of the Pulse Oximeter Racial bias led to faulty product design that led to its inability to work properly with melanin-rich skin</a>".</div></div>

    <div><br></div>“If you have melanin, which is the pigment that's responsible for skin color…that could potentially affect the transmittance of the light going through the skin,” said Govind Rao, a professor of engineering and director of the Center for Advanced Sensor Technology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, who was not involved in the study.<div>...</div>

    <div>The study “shows how urgent it is to move away from pulse [oximeters],” said Rao, and to find alternatives ways of measuring blood-oxygen saturation.</div>

    <div>A long-term solution will require changing the technology, either by using a different method entirely or having devices that can better adjust results to account for differences in skin color. One technological alternative is having devices that measure oxygen diffusing across the skin, called transdermal measurement, which Rao’s lab is working on developing.</div>

    <li><span><span><span>If selected, you will be expected to attend the mini-retreat, held on Friday, July 22 from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm, and should expect to attend 2-3 Advisory Board Meetings per semester, held on Fridays from 10:00 - 11:30 am.</span></span></span></li>

    <div>The Initiatives for Identity, Inclusion &amp; Belonging (i3b) Advisory Board is a community of UMBC faculty, staff, (undergrad/grad) students, and alumni committed to fostering an equity-focused, justice-oriented, and inclusive campus community. Through the support of i3b programming, advising and consultation with i3b professional staff, and advocacy for i3b and its three identity, inclusion and belonging spaces: The Mosaic, Pride Center, and Gathering Space for Spiritual Well-Being, the Advisory Board will serve as a direct tie to faculty, staff, student, and alumni needs, voices, and ideas. Through the partnership with Advisory Board members, i3b hopes to cultivate new community connections, leverage existing strategic partnerships, and contribute to a stronger sense of belonging, especially for underrepresented and minoritized students, through informal mentorship and collaborative planning for new and existing programs and initiatives. </div>

    <div>Board members should expect at minimum to meet monthly for one hour, are expected to attend at least one i3b event or program a semester, and volunteer for at least one large-scale event per year like PAWTalks, Pangea, Lavender Celebration, and/or Connection Groups like First-Year Connections, SistaCare, and Retriever Immigrants United (RIU). Board members will be appointed for a two-year term.</div>
    <div><strong><br></strong></div>
    <div><strong>Both members of UMBC’s Main Campus and Shady Grove Campus are eligible to apply. </strong></div>
    <div><ul>
    <li>Eligibility requirements for students include being a full-time UMBC student 12 hours undergraduate, 9 hours graduate), a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA, and being in good academic standing. In addition, students must be connected to other student communities on campus (e.g. SGA, GSA, student organizations, scholar community members). If you are graduating within one year of your term, it is expected that you will continue in your role as young alumni. </li>
    <li>Eligibility requirements for staff and faculty include at least 1 full year of employment at the university.</li>
    <li>Eligibility Requirements for alumni must have been connected to alumni chapters or organizations (e.g. Alumni Board of Directors, CBLA, CYA) or student communities during their time on campus (e.g. SGA, GSA, student organizations, scholar community members) </li>
