The art of flipping sneakers has turned into a billion-dollar business. Resellers make money by identifying which sneakers will become the most desired styles, buying them up, and hyping them to potential buyers, selling them for many times the purchase price. Social media, especially Instagram which launched in 2010, has helped increase the attention on sneakers and given resellers an easier way to connect to their customers and sell shoes. In order to explore this, I conducted ethnographic research entirely online, using participant observation and interviews with Instagram resellers and their followers. In this presentation, I will draw on this research to examine the motivations of the resellers and their customers, what makes something desirable and how trends are shaped, and the sense of identity that emerges for both the reseller and consumer. This tightly focused study sheds light on the personal, social, and cultural dimensions of markets and the promotion of desire.

Intern of the Week: McKenna Austin-Ward for Art History!

<Tagline>Check out McKenna's internship with Museum of the Bible.</Tagline>

Name:McKenna Austin-Ward

Internship, Co-op or Research Site:Museum of the Bible

Position Title:Museum Education Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s):Art History/Museum Studies

Current Class Level:Senior

Work Term:Spring 2021

Tell us about your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day responsibilities.

The Museum of the Bible has granted me the responsibility of the development of educational programing for K-12 visitors. My duties include scholarly research, the design of activities, the writing of budgets, the obtainment of materials, the creation of prototypes, and the interaction with visitors on the floor of the museum.

Describe the process of obtaining your position. When did you hear of the position and submit your application?

I heard of this position in early October of 2020 and subsequently submitted my application on October 12th.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization?

Amongst my peers, I often find myself alone in my interest in religious art. It is a great joy to work amongst colleagues who share my profound interest in biblical history and theology.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

The education carts which I am in the process of developing will serve as the face of the museum. Engaging the museum guests by means of this programming will allow families, particularly students, to better immerse themselves with the knowledge our museum holds

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Due to the fierce competition often involved in obtaining an internship or similar experience, it is vital to devote oneself to research and to learn to write excellent, creative cover letters.

Through LSAMP, I was able to join the Vonhoff lab my LSAMP, I was able to join the Vonhoff lab my freshman year, and ever since, I have seen how freshman year, and ever since, I have seen how much progress I have made. The program even much progress I have made. The program even helped me go to California last fall for the helped me go to California last fall for the ABRCMS conference, which was really fun! I first learned about LSAMP at the USM I first learned about LSAMP at the USM LSAMP Summer Bridging Conference and I am LSAMP Summer Bridging Conference and I am grateful that I did because it set me on a grateful that I did because it set me on a great path. It has helped me stay motivated great path. It has helped me stay motivated with my school work and understand what I with my school work and understand what I want to do with my future. I have learned so want to do with my future. I have learned so much about what continued engagement in much about what continued engagement in Chemical Engineering could look like following Chemical Engineering could look like following graduation. With all this in mind, I can graduation. With all this in mind, I can confidently say I am in a better position to confidently say I am in a better position to succeed with a purpose and passion because of succeed with a purpose and passion because of my engagement with LSAMP. my engagement with LSAMP.

"All in all, my time in the Leach lab has allowed me to further develop and grow my skills as a researcher and engineer. Additionally, I have been able to apply chemical engineering principles that I learned in the classroom into a lab environment which gives me a deeper understanding of the material. I will be able to use these skills in any lab that I join in the future and this opportunity has also allowed me to establish strong connections with a faculty member in the department of my major." - Howard Nicholson '21 -
