          <p>The UMBC Kinetic Sculpture Team will share their process for redesigning the “MC Hammerhead” kinetic sculpture, including research on sustainable design (McDonough and Braungart 2002, 2013), Agile methods of project management (Ullman 2008) and integrative strategies for combining the expertise of majors from engineering, visual arts, information systems, anthropology, psychology, and Asian Studies (Miller&amp;Boix Mansilla 2004). </p>
          <p>The Team will share art and engineering sketches, photos of the design and build process, and videos of the test ride of the twenty foot shark sculpture. Team members will discuss their experiments with reclaimed materials, including how they tested material integrity through prototyping. Building on the visual communication the Kraken Upcycle Team used regarding plastic accumulation as the new monster of the sea, the Shark Sculpture Team will create visual metaphors highlighting the importance of using recycled plastics.  </p>
          <p>The project is continually evolving in iterative cycles, merging past teams’ work with current team members’ personal experience and skills that they bring to the project. Finally, the team will discuss the broader impact of sustainable design through examples such as WashedAshore.org and the work of artist Angelia Haseltine Pozzi.</p>

    <p>Low-cost digital fabrication technology, and in particular 3D printing, is ushering in a new wave of personal computing. The technology promises that users will be able to design, customize and create any object to fit their needs. While the objects that we interact with daily are generally made of many types of materials—they may be hard, soft, conductive, etc.—current digital fabrication machines have largely been limited to producing rigid and passive objects. In this talk, I will present my research on developing digital fabrication processes that incorporate new materials such as textiles and hydrogels. These processes include novel 3D printer designs, software tools, and human-in-the-loop fabrication techniques. With these processes, new materials can be controlled, customized, and integrate computational capabilities—at design time and after fabrication—for creating personalized and interactive objects. I will conclude Research this talk with my vision for enabling anyone to create with digital fabrication technology and its impact beyond the individual.</p>

    <p><a href="https://mikeriv.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Michael Rivera</a> is a Ph.D. Candidate at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University where he is advised by Scott Hudson. He works at the intersection of human-computer interaction, digital fabrication, and materials science. He has published papers on novel digital fabrication processes and interactive systems at top-tier HCI venues, including ACM CHI, UIST, DIS, and IMWUT. His work has been recognized with a Google – CMD-IT Dissertation Fellowship, an Adobe Research Fellowship Honorable Mention, and a Xerox Technical Minority Scholarship. Before Carnegie Mellon, he completed a M.S.E in Computer Graphics and Game Technology and a B.S.E in Digital Media Design at the University of Pennsylvania. He has also worked at the Immersive Experiences Lab of HP Labs, and as a software engineer at Facebook and LinkedIn.</p>

  <Title>Career Advice Series: Be open to the possibilities!</Title>
  <Tagline>Your career path may begin in the most unlikely of places!</Tagline>
  <Body>

    <div class="html-content">
    <p><span>When
    embarking on a job or internship search, if you are like most job seekers, you
    may be feeling a sense of ambiguity. You may be wondering what’s “out there”
    for me?<span>  </span>What opportunities should I be
    targeting with my educational background and/or degree?<span>  </span>These questions are typical and can often
    lead to a sense of anxiety and confusion.</span></p>

    <p><span>Instead
    of approaching your search from the notion that your major should drive your
    direction, why not be open to new possibilities?<span>  </span>After all, when does life unfold just as you
    expect?<span>  </span>I say <em>embrace</em> the journey
    – after all, the journey <em>is</em> the destination! </span>When starting out, rather than chasing a specific “path”, having a sense of
    adventure and openness will not only take the pressure off, you may find an
    opportunity where you least expect it! </p>
    <p><span><em><strong>Don’t
    be limited by your major – but rather think of it as a springboard off which to
    jump into your next adventure! </strong></em></span></p>

    <p><span><strong>UMBC's
    Career Month begins in April.</strong><strong> </strong> Throughout
    the month, we offer an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to
    explore their professional options through workshops, resume reviews, alumni
    panels and virtual networking events with employers. </span>Each
    week we are featuring a different employment industry but with repeating event
    types.</p>

    <p><span>We
    encourage all students from freshman to PhD-level to "<strong>Be open to the

    <div>
    <div>Announced today, 2022 U.S. News Best Graduate School Rankings name several UMBC programs in engineering and public affairs as among the best in the nation.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>U.S. News bases these rankings on a combination of quantitative data about over 2,125 programs and expert opinions on program reputations. This feedback is provided through surveys to more than 23,000 deans, program directors, senior faculty, and other leaders. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>UMBC has top-100 programs in public affairs and several engineering fields. Engineering is one of a few areas where rankings also reflect the opinions of professionals who hire or work with new graduates. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    </div>
    <div>
    <div>UMBC engineering programs were recognized in five separate categories. For <strong>environmental engineering</strong> UMBC moved from #58 to #56, and for mechanical engineering UMBC rose from #105 to #101. UMBC’s graduate programs in <strong>chemical engineering</strong> experienced the most rankings growth, from #84 to #68. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>“I am not at all surprised by the higher rankings we see for our chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering (CBEE) graduate programs,” says <strong>Keith J Bowman</strong>, dean of the College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT). “We have expanded a fantastic team by hiring outstanding new faculty and we have been successful in recruiting extraordinary graduate students.”</div>
    <div><br></div>
    </div>
    <div>
    <div>CBEE Professor <strong>Erin Lavik</strong>, COEIT’s associate dean for research and faculty development, shares, “Whether it is technologies to enable better, more accessible treatments for diseases or developing solutions to make environmental justice a reality, our CBEE programs prepare students for the future as socially responsible engineers.”</div>
